I am turning 17 at the end of the month and i have been playing for about 3 or 4 years, my first bass was my dads bass which he virtually never played as he is a guitarist, it was a Vintage (make). I then got my first amp as a birthday present which was an ashdown mini rig 2x10 and i loved it. I got annoyed with the vintage's bland tone and dead frets so when on my work experience 2 years ago in a local music shop i bought the blue washburn XB-120 you can see in the picture which was a surprisingly good bass, it seemed to help me become a lot better on bass. I then had my ashdown mini rig at a proper venue for our bands first gig and it simply wasn't loud enough. So my dad secretly bought a peavey tnt 150 combo off ebay for £40 knowing that it was faulty, but that was no problem as we knew a amp repairer who repaired it for £40 and then my dads friend (a sound engineer) who owed my dad a favour gave us a new neodymium magnet bass speaker. It now sounds incredible and has served me well in my many gigs in the last 6 months. A few months ago i decided i needed a change from it as it sounded either insanely trebley or insanely bassey, and it sounded naf at gigs i discovered. I then bought a Fender Jazz Bass 70's Reissue MIJ from www.fareastguitars.com which is an outstanding sight dealing in second hand japanese guitars and basses, funding the bass meant selling my old ashdown mini rig, my boss rc-2 looper and various other things. It was second hand and 5 years old but as you can see from the photos it was in pristine condition and it still is. I have a MXR super comp which i think i may sell to get a EHX big muff and an octave pedal. Finally i use Elixir lights on my bass as i hated having to pay £15 - £20 for a set of strings every two months at least (i hate dead strings) so elixirs saved me money and keep a brilliant tone for at least a year! ----------------------------------------------------------- I'm now looking into buying a Fretless bass and a double bass but i need the money for driving lessons :|

Squiers are bought by my school solely because they are cheap. I think they are market leaders in THEIR market (inexpensive instruments) in regards to price, quality, sound and reliability etc etc. However when i compare my 5 year old Fender Jazz MIJ to a brand new squier jazz i found the difference between them was pretty big over all the areas. But that's just my opinion i suppose! On a further note, i played one of these http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/squier-/71293 that my friend bought. My jazz is the bass that this squier is based on. I have to say that i was impressed with its sound.
I've used these for a few years, pretty good, reliable and cheap - http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=BEHRING...ved=0CB0QrQQwAg
sweet cheers

I know this may sound like an outrageous question to some of you but, does anyone know how much should a standard DI box costs? Because a Mark Bass DI costs around 70 quid, that seems a bit steep to me :s does anyone have a standard DI that they would like to sell? and if so how much? cheers
So in terms of your chain you can see that after your bass your chain is less than optimal. If you don't have any cash for upgrades I'd start by removing the Behringer from the chain. It looks like an extra gain stage in the signal chain for no good reason. I'd dump it unless you have a good reason not to. I've searched realtek and it looks like just a normal soundcard rather than an audio recording specific one. That will not be helping. Finally, what level are you hitting your DAW at? You want to be hitting about -18 to -12dbfs maximum. If you are hitting more than that you are essentially burning the audio. Hope this all makes sense?
Firstly, i don't know what a DAW is.... and if i don't use my mixer then what do i plug my bass into? :s that must sound like a daft question sorry but i am 16 and i have taught myself everything to do with recording so far
I would also like to know how I can get a decent bass recording using the stuff I have. Instead of making my own thread I hope it's okay that I post this in your thread. Anyway, I have an edriol interface, and a bass. That's literally all my recording hardware, the rest unfortunately is software. Which brings me to my point, I've been using amplitube ever since I got the interface, and whilst it's amazing for guitar, with bass it doesn't sound good at all. The bass heads and cabs are terrible, but they're good for acoustic guitar. I've tried using just cabinet impulses, and no matter how much EQ or compression I use, I can't for the life of me get a good bass tone, and it sounds even worse in the mix. I know it's not my basses, I can get great tones out of them with my amp. I don't have any mics for the amp, and I don't think I'll have the money for one any time soon... Does anyone have any tips? Perhaps someone has the same kinda set up as me and can share their bass recording method? As always, any help would be appreciated!
its no problem
