1.
Dance also doesn't sound right without using a pick. Some folks say that he used to use the surface of his index fingernail as a pick, but take my word for it I have tried that method and it bloody hurts very quickly!
James Jamerson used to do that for 16ths too (according to his son) I suppose as he only used one finger, he had to get double value from it
2. I have one of the Behringer 450 w combos, and the weight is huge. I cant pick it up on my own. I used to be able to get a reasonable sound out of it, till one day the amp (when warmed up) started to have sound cut outs every 30 seconds for a few seconds. So i swapped out the amp and used a Hartke 500 w amp instead. Which seems to work very well with the speakers.
3.
Good noise though...
What, you screaming in terror or the engine ?
4. Aha, Shropshire middle of nowhere. I know it well Welcome. (I only once road a 1970s Moto Guzzi,850 and the brakes failed, just as I was coming up to a roundabout. I ended up riding straight over the grass in the middle!)
5.
I get more fret buzz, so have to increase the bow. Luckily I haven`t had to adjust my 77, but the MIM had some tweakage.
I dunno if its related, but my Farida Jazz has turned in to a 'twangger' but my Farida P bass sounds much better than usual ?!
6. Possibly a drop D tuner on a four string is the answer. It works for Billy the king.
7. Dunno if this has been posted before but here are the separate tracks, so you can hear clearly that most excellent Adam Yauch riff in all its distorted and untrammeled glory. link here (55mb total in .rar compression format) (I've included the full track, as well. In case anyone doesn't have it to hand)
8. Hah, I knewd it all along. Five strings pah, I'll sh*t 'em.
9. Your first mistake was buying the Berklee book Your second mistake was buying the Berklee book Your third mistake was buying the Berklee book ............................................................................................... Your hundredth mistake was buying the Berklee book Seriously. Berklee students are expected to have a reasonable musical grounding before they start there. To save classroom time I suppose, which is expensive. (also the books are bloody boring theory, dull dull dullsville!)
10. In the first pic the chrome has a green tint and the second one is very obvious as the 'mother of pearl' inlays are blue too. But carry on, I'm all for winding up Talk bass with a bit of photo japery
11. Oooh nah squire, I'd be careful if I were you. I picked up a five string once and totally forgot how to play. The extra string flummoxed me it did. Wasn't right for weeks.
12. I wonder how many would welcome me if I went in and totally truthfully said. " I have no intention of buying today. But if I find something I like, then at sometime in the future is I get the money I may well come back and buy it, if I can get it off you at a fair price" None I'll bet. but then to be fair, that's not just true of Denmark street and musical instrument shops ? PS: I have just had a thought. I now intend to do this now in every guitar shop I go in. Will open a new thread and let you know how I get on. Should be interesting, if slow.
13. I just check me lottery ticket. If I've won ill be flying down on Monday morning, only a 500 mile round trip for me (too expensive on the petrol to drive there, even with a lottery win) If i don't make it, Have fun!
14. Kudos to you for giving them away. Shame you live 300 miles away or id come and pick them up. I have about 50 music biographies. (yes i am a collection 'a' holic. Gonna have to get rid of a lot of stuff come the first carboot sale next bank holiday) When you read that many related bios you see connections all over the place. (James Burke, anyone ?) As I said. Kudos to you sir.
15. Billy Sheehan swears by it. He says as he usually practices with his bass unplugged, that the amount of high to low is much less than when plugged in, so he reigns it back in with a compressor. The result being his practice sound is nearer to what it sounds like on stage, just different in volume.
16.
This infuriates me. I work in both the music and service industries so maybe that's why, but when I read that, it made me want to go and cause that guy some trouble, maybe go in and just casually pick up his stock with sticky chocolatey fingers, or lead him on, and on, and on, get him pilling up thousands worth of gear and then give him and expired credit card at the end. Sadly Newcastle is a bit far to go just to harass a complete arsehole.
I promise if I win the lottery, even a small win of say 80 grand, I will go and do this and film it with a spy camera for youtube Righto, fingers crossed for the lottery. I have about 25 tickets here to check, that I have collected and not yet checked, over the last few months.
17.
It's not really a case of what is being reviewed that bothers me, it's the fact that practically everything gets a pretty positive review. I mainly buy it for the backpage stuff, the lessons and the like. I think the section on other bassists from not very well known bands is a pretty good section, gives coverage for quiet promising acts and opens up readers to new music.
I know. Its as if there are no poor basses in the entire world! And as for those bass academy members that nobody has heard of. WHO CARES!!! STOP putting them in the bloody magazine. These days I always flick through it in WHSmiths to see if its worth spending best part of a fiver on. It usually isn't I'm very sorry to say. Although some of the tutorials are often informative. Especially Dave Marks (is he still in it ?)
18. R.I.P. Nathanial Hornblower. The video to Sabbotage is an all time classic, for that alone you deserve a place in Nirvana. A hugely compassionate and talented human being, who stood up to be counted. See you next time around. I'm ashamed to say I didn't even know you were in a bad way. 19.
I got one a few days ago ( Model 32 Water ) and I must have gotten one from a good batch, feels solid, no paint overspray, nut is nice and neat, straight neck and no fret buzz, fingerboard is nice, no saw marks and fret wire is smooth. I think it's good fun to play, and using it through my Laney it did have a surprising presence after I messed with the EQ a bit. 90% of reviews seem to bring up the QC and there doesn't seem to be much love for them. I like mine and would have no problem gigging it along with the D-1, and Tanglewood Bassmaster. I do plan on swapping the pup in the future though, but that's about all.
kudos to you for giving it a try and deciding to keep it on its own merits. As you say, you must be lucky to have got a good one that they accidentally let through. The lack of quality control bloke must have been in the bogs.
20. Since I saw Jah Wobble, play one a while back I have fancied one myself. They look superb. I saw Wobble turn the bass right up and then blew up an Ashdown amp with it.
21.
convinced that it wouldn't break, I took a big metal chair to it... it broke.
DoH!
22. If you cant get anyone living near you to collect them, I would give you the postage. I have all sorts of maps, mainly London, Chester, Wirral, Liverpool Cheshire, and Devon and Cornwal areas. But wouldn't mind expanding the ol' collection somewhat.
23. Any pictures and details of serial numbers would be a huge help.
24. Hail friend, and welcome.
25. Hands up, if you want to read this and we can sort a new list, as there are 2 copies doing the rounds at the mo'
