1.
who were they??
It’s a bit of a dumb one this, but, a couple of friends asked me to a rock covers band gig, when we turned up, unbeknown to us the rock band had cancelled a few days earlier. The jazz funk band were the short notice replacement, we watched their first set and ok it was to, but we didn’t stay for the second set as my buddies were expecting a rock band. As far as I know they played original material but there were a couple of less commercial Simply Red numbers in there, unfortunately I can’t remember their name. Bass sound was good though.

  2. I don't know much about funk but, I saw a funk jazz band a couple of months ago,..... you know you just have to know what gear the bass player is using, well he was using a G&L L2000 (USA I think) and a markbass stack. The only way to describe the sound was 'TRUELY AWESOME'. I was blown away!!

  3.
Yeah, i know, some excellent advice, support & very kind & generous offers of help on this forum. Just posting here, and getting the feedback, has cheered me up. Thanks

Funnilly enough. I had planned, in the week, to get a Squier VMJ fretless today, as a 2nd bass, and a 1st to learn fretless on. I know that this would not be a good replacement gigging bass, but i could practice the set with it in the meantime & keep my fingers crossed for my L2000 to be fixed & back with me before the gig, or if push comes to shove, borrow a fretted bass off of some kind soul.
Yeah, keep your chin up, this is sorta one big family, there is something about bass that so good (even songs that are cr*p are enjoyable if they have a good bass groove)....... in a crisis we are all with you. Best of luck with the L2000 and by the way if you buy a VMJ fretless you'll not regret it! NJ

  4. After reading through all the posts, my sympathy is with you, although I think it could have been a whole lot worse (snapped in half, totally crushed etc)

There is some excellent expert advice for you and if it does have to go in for luthier repair and you have gigs coming up then I would in the short term do one of three things,

1, borrow a bass to use as has been offered, 2, rent a bass, or 3, buy another cheepish decent bass that you could easily sell on after your main bass is repaired. Obviously basses that are desirable second hand would mean you'll recoup most of your money back.

Off the top of my head, Squier affinity precision or jazz, Yamaha BB414 or Ibanez GSR200 would be good and a second hand one would be even better, there are many decent basses on this forum for £100 or under.
    Good luck. NJ

  5.

I bought this plate for a project and as often happens it didn't fit, so I had a look to see what it did fit in order to sell it on. What I found was it was very close to fitting the Squier vintage modified fretless, so a little touch round the neck pocket and it fit perfectly. I am not sure if it would also fit the VMJazz fretted but I would say it's possible as these seem to be the same pickup position as the fretless.

So if you fancy modifying your Squier fretless to make it less Jaco like then this is for you. As you can see it has been placed on the bass and not screwed down.

Will sell for a tenner inc post, thanks.

  6. I have a fairly recent Made in Japan Tokai P, I have not had Fender P's but have had a couple of USA Jazzes and IMHO the Tokai is as well made and sounds just as good as a freinds USA P. Right up there with good Fenders.

  7. I follow this thread and threads like it about Retrovibes with interest, one thing i've noticed, lot's of potential buyers thinking and looking, asking a few questions, very few pulling the trigger!

It's almost as if, it just must be too good to be true, and often in life it usually is? ....me, i'm curious and a little bit cautious, maybe someone can shed more light on these fine looking basses?...Nick.

  8. Hi all, does anyone know if the scratchplate from the fretted VMJ will go on the fretless VMJ squier, in other words are the neck pocket-pick up-control plate dimensions the same on both models?

Also if a scratchplate were to be bought off eBay etc. what model of Fender (or other) is the same size as the VMJ squier(s)? Any help or experience appreciated, Nick.

  9.
Id love this. I just cant justify it when i have 3 other basses. I need to sell one methinks.
yeh, I know what you mean, i'd love to keep it, but 5 basses is too many, it is a superb bass and if it doesn't sell I will have to advertise one of the others, cheers.

  10. BUMP................ there has been some confusion as to wheather this is a top quallity japanese Tokai or a cheap taiwanese one, this is the real deal, I did photgraph the 'made in japan' words printed under the varnish at the back of the neck but due to the (very) bright sunlight the words were not readable in the picture. I will take and post another picture of this if any potential buyer wants to see it.

May part ex for reasonable 6 string accoustic guitar + cash.............BUMP

  11. Hello, I have for sale my Made in Japan Tokai Hardpuncher, it’s in beautiful as new condition and has only been used at home, never gigged.

It is in a beautiful golden colour, a little bit lighter than the photo’s show with an aged vintage colour maple neck & fret board and a colour matched headstock. It has a vintage style anodised metal scratch plate. It is quite a light bass. Will come with new strings on. I've had it about a year.

It has only been out of the house once and that was when my mate tried it on one song (for me!) on his bands sound check. It sounded absolutely superb no different from his USA Fender precision and looked absolutely amazing under stage lights.

I’m not desperate to sell as this is a fantastic looking and sounding bass, but my collection is now up to 5 and I’m only allowed 4 (lack of space) so one has to go. Will be sad to see it go but they are all good basses.

Please note this is a Japanese one not to be confused with Chinese Tokai’s and they retail for about £600, I will take £390 for this including free insured shipping within the UK. My packing has been described as bomb proof so bass will be lovingly packed for its journey to the buyer. Thanks for looking.

could also sell you a chunky chrome wilkinson bridge with brass saddles or a Gotoh 201 in chrome to go with it if you want (I have a spare of both bridges) both are straight screw on replacements.
