Never thought I would do this but hey Up for sale (no trades) is my 1978 Stingray. Had this for many years. Its all original, complete with epoxy pre-amp. Been refretted of course, as to be expected for a 32 year old bass. Selling for £1,600 including hard case (though not original). Collection from West London only. And now the photies....... Its difficult to get regular Mon-Thu evening slots in London rehearsal studios we've tried. Consequently, used a lot of different places. Some are great, e.g. Terminal, Joint & Fortress. Some are ok; Alaska & Premises. Some are good but out the way; Creek Others are crap; Enterprise Any recommendations ? Looking for clean large rooms w/quality gear. Thx

Hawkwind - some great (and under-appreciated) bass playing
obi 2 kenobi replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Also big Hawkfan. Saw them live on Black Sword tour in Glasgow in '84. Harvey was the man for me, esp Levitation era...got it on blue vinyl.... Met Lemmy a few times in the Portobello Gold. Great pub -
Ah, unfortunately it had some issues issues with the neck when it arrived. I decided against waiting for another as it put me off in a way. Big Al 5 and Ray 5 will be more than enough anyway
Can you pm me with details as I am considering selling my pre-eb to buy a Classic. Thx

Louis also had a great fingerstyle sound. Solid and tastefull. With Michael McDonald.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2iFqcFcdBU

Larry Graham had a great sound by first GCS record in '74. Granted before that it was arguably undefined when with Sly. Other guys in the same period (Louis Johnson, Pops, etc) also had a kind of muffled slap tone on the P basses at the time. Personally I prefer the Louis's stingray tone on Blam from '78 to the among best recorded slap tone. Which is another reason why rays > p bass IMO Other great early slap sounds are from Byron Miller (on p bass with George Duke and Roy Ayers). Also check out Abe Laboriel, esp. on Chaka Khan (Night in Tunisia) and w/ George Benson 'Give me the nIght album
obi - A very nice pair, sir!! Is the one on the right a Cherry 'burst? The see-thru guard shows it off nicely too. Cheers. I think its either Honeyburst or Autumn Burst. Very orange & yellow in the flesh. Sound Control had a 5-6 Stingrays when I bought it 20 years ago or so. It had the best paint job. bass5 - Ok, did it this time. Actually, it didn't take too long after all. The 'other porn' served to fill the time... The vid is nicely done too and your basses look truly wunnerful! So what do you think of the 25th Anniversary? And who's the music you used for the vid? (Carlton? Ritenour? Stern? etc.)

very nice ones are you having them from new or you find them in the way?
1987 from new. 1978 got 10 years ago from ex pro (Gary Numan, Van Morrison) who had it since new.
I think 2eq is better in the low end. Definitely I am gonna buy a classic. My fretless that is 2 eq has the best sound that a stingray can get. I think the 3 band eq is good in my HH stingray that can play everything the pickup make the difference tonal variations and sounds from the HH model. I don’t know the graphite neck should affect the tone. Overall 2 eq is better but i think you need more ajustments to get the right tone with the 3eq.
Your last comment is spot on. With 2EQ its plug'in & play. Cuts through instantly at any control setting. With 3EQ you've got to fiddle with the mids, and sound is always at bit more abrasive. Though I'm happy with both. Cue photo excuse....

Lazarus thread here.... Rehearsing with 2 bands over last 2 months. One with gtr, keys & drms and other with gtr x 2, keys & drums. Both similar, mostly classic rock. Been switching been two Stingrays; a 2EQ and 3EQ to check the difference. Amps set flat. Same strings. With 2EQ, instant cut through. Bass control at 40% - 75% . Treble close to zero. With a 3EQ, if all set at centre detente, sound is lost. Reproducing 2EQ settings (on bass & treble) with mid at centre....still sound is lost. Becomes too bassy and lacks definition. Need to use mid boost to get heard but sound is overly harse imo. Conclusion, 2EQ wins.

Hi anyone got this tab? Got to learn a pile of songs. Difficult to hear the bass, too low in mix.

These bands appeared around the same time in the mid 80s or so and were all kind of early pioneers of funk metal punk combos with Bad Brains possibly the first in this genre. RHCP really exploded on scene in '91 with BSSM leaving the other bands well behind. Is it because their songs were 'better' or is there another reason ?

Diggin' through my old records, picking up Trouble Funk and Chuck Brown. I saw TF live in London in '86. Best live gig I've ever been to. Band were tighter than a gnat's chuff. Saw Chuck in '93 in Paris Anyhow, here's the precursor to the go go sound, Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers, 'Ashley's Roachclip.'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfymVPOdMwk Sampled to death, go to 3.28. How many times has this been used ? Bustin' Loose......top funkin album..... Check the dreads in the vid. This is 1978, before Stevie and Rick James caught on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoUVPXxlvmY Chuck again with 'We need some Money' from the film 'Good to Go. Sadly unavailable on DVD. Though I have 3 soundtrack copies on vinyl ! Not sure if this guy gets enough recognition. Amazing player with the band Slave. Check 'Feel my love' , one of the best examples of his signature sound; big growling rasping sound punctuated with slides, double stops and tasty fills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1X4C0sg8hM Also 'Watching You': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeZeAcuIkgk...PL&index=17 sampled by Snoop on 2 occasions no less ! Check Slave's 3 albums with Steve Arrington on drums & vocals for more great stuff

I'll take your Mary Jane Girls and raise you with Keni Burke 'Risin' to the Top'. Immense track. Ripped off by the aforesaid MJG.

Derek Forbes (Simple Minds) - The Interview
obi 2 kenobi replied to Linus27's topic in General Discussion
I'm impressed. Cool guy. - Why were his basslines mixed so quietly on Sparkle in the Rain. - How does he feel about the 'Minds now - Which track is he most proud of, out of all his recordings (Minds, Propaganda, etc) - Does he still have his Alembic Spoiler - Does Kenny Hyslop ever shut up -
Most definitely Paul Jackson.....very recognisable style
