4 strings sound better than 5 string basses. Discuss.
ARGH replied to EBS_freak's topic in General Discussion
The double bass is a rather different kettle of fish because a big part of the sound is how the strings transfer their vibrations through the bridge and into the top. To a degree this is analogous to the voice coil of a loudspeaker transferring its vibrations into the cone. Add another string and whilst that string is static you are doing the equivalent of increasing the stiffness of the speaker suspension and this lowering of compliance will raise the resonant frequencies of the top and reduce the Q, giving less weight and depth to the bottom. Or to put it more simply, the added string tension and thus pressure on the bridge makes it harder for the top and thus the instrument to vibrate, which inevitably changes the tone. Alex
In laymans terms,a Bass guitar ISNT made to resonate to the levels of an acoustic instrument, feedback city if it did.....SO to compare one to the other is useless. Back on topic, anyone who cant play a 5 is a spazz....* *not on topic,or even believable,or a genuine held belief, but considering Ive garnered an undeserved reputation for being a stirrer it seems fittingly juvenile. -
+1 with thinking the "real bassists only use their fingers".
NOOO...Real Bassists play an instrument thats capable of playing notes LOWER than thin stringers. Glad you are happy Homer

Open E is Open E on a 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 or...etc etc I prefer to play a 6, Ive made a lot more money on a 4,and I adore my fretless 5. To say 'If you cant play it on 4 you..blah blah' is true until recent times, the music, esp in heavier, more extreme, forms of music..has been in lower tunings, and you need equipment capable of recreating such sounds, and sadly its just not capable,or comfortable upon a 4,no matter how much it is modified. A few years ago I was an utter 4 Nazi.....It was until a keys player asked "Do you have a 5 or a 6 string?",that the ice melted. It was fantastic to have far far far greater note choice, and tonality under my hands.... The Phatness of an E on the 5th fret of a low B string,is summat to behold,as if it was another colour upon the palette. But its great being a flash bastard on a 4,upp and down the neck like a monkey hunting for a Banana....Bloody tiring on a night though. -
Well if you can say that a guy who had a fetish for wearing Nazi uniforms and collecting Nazi memorabilia, was the 'good guy' doesn't say much for the rest of the band Don't stop me from loving the Stooges though.
Yeah,of course collecting anything political or 'Dark' in its nature is BAD. .....Old Red stars,Old Iron Crosses, signed pics of African Dictators,Serial killer artwork, bust's of Lenin, Old SS Daggers....anything to be associated with Crowley....Ernie Ball Sabre's.....makes all collectors of anything c**ts dosent it..all property is theft...

After those Ecomentalists released wild boar up in Exmoor 4 years back...is this another mad idea to bring retronature back to places that couldnt, shouldnt, and dont bloody want to,sustain it. P.s. Wild Boar ,full grown are lethal,I cant wait for a little kid to be attacked around High Bray...And THEN where are the greenies?
I've never had any troubles, always quick service and neve had to contact them. But I've always bought DR sets off them so they'd have to have some seriously bad facilities to ruin those strings. They also consistently cheaper than Stringdirect for most everything and have better choice. However at £35 per 5 string set of Hi-Beams, and that's the cheapest price I've found from a UK site, I'm thinking of switching to D'Addario Prosteels - at £17.60 they're literally half the price.
Your probably better off, seeing the style of music you play......dunno if you like a bit of zing, but you must kill a set in 3-4 gigs like I do,and Ive tried every trick in the book from boiling to meth swabs to keep strings from dying. What guages are you running? And how f***ed does the fretless board get before it needs a planeing?
Thanks for all the info guys! Some of the companies I did not know yet. And some lovely basses I like ARGH's bass that has been made by Jim Fleeting a lot. I have a a little bit of a designer backround and I love it when a bass still looks awesome and cool without the use of AAAAA grade maple or a sunburst finish. Just simple woods, yummie I put Jim Fleeting on the list of¨builders I will definatly contact. On the bad side: I wanted to use my christmas bonus for a bass but my house has a leek in the front wall which has to be repaired and will cost lots of money Hmm I have to wait for a couple of months. The good side is that I can think some more about what I really want. I feel like a kid in a candy store that can only buy one candy
This is the front of my new Fleeting Headless,in my bodyshape (see the 9 string),its a 6 string, and made of Olivewood and Black Limba...with a few bits of other stuff at my request (Wooden knobs, single EMG P/U,matching 18v circuit). Convincing isnt it.
I tried the SR505 out again today.. really nice bass. Very impressed with its playability.
Ibanez always are good, solid instruments, they can be a little too middy in the thin stringer dept.....But you cant go far wrong for the money.
I enjoyed the Hold Steadys the most - I'd not heard of them before. I thought Martha and the Vandellas performed very well considering their age. Duffy's/Adele's/Lilly's material really left me cold, and Annie's songs were very downbeat and didn't fit in well with the NYE 'party'. Stuff like the Ting Tings was okay - fairly lively pop music to get people dancing. Not music I'd buy myself but nowt wrong with it. Overall pretty average and not much of a celebration of anything.
Saw bits...have to agree. Thought Adele was brilliant, lily was okish...Still find the most interesting thing about Duffy is weather shes had a nose job for a hairlip or some corrective surgery, coz that conks plastic if I ever saw one.
