Absolutely +1. I know it's individual taste and all that, but whenever I see vids of Cliff Burton solos I can't help wondering what all the fuss is about and why Metallica fans still seem to think he's so irreplaceable. BTW, I'm something of a jazzer (but I do like some metal too... see, you can do both), and the only thing I 'fear' about metal is being accidentally caught in the eye by a pointy headstock.
Cliff's legend is partially because of his ,sad, tragic, demise, and in a genre of root hugging (the heavier you get the way harder it is to break from the mighty riff) he wrote lines that were counterpoint, and SOOOO part of the tune,Thrash was the pick up of the Gauntlet from Motorhead, basically a primal, how far can you go with speed and volume, often it DID look childish, but Cliff,he went that way,and threw in melody,.......Ron Broder was another, check out Coroner's 1st lp,in fact ,nearly everything by Coroner is musically impressive. I still maintain there was one Bassist that blew them all away, but never got the cred because he only had 1 lp,before he died....Pointy BC Rich included. Roger Patterson of Atheist, http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QGfUWIU_l8Q If you just wait,What I play might change your mind too. Its easy to think its all noise, like all Jazz is navel, but both are so alike,it hurts.
If being a 14 year old boy all your life is your thing, then fair play to all Metallers. Heavy Metal FTW.
Thats a really thought out, intelligent, and mature reply Steve. Heres my reply. If you want to penis measure skill, timing, melodic content, volume,or ability, maturity,or humour Ive a million of them. Ive met a buttload of 'Mature' LCM Jazzers,10 years back, before the Scandi's blew the dust out of the place, snotty nosed, social retards, that stayed in their glass mountains of self induced arrogance....beards and clarinets, suits and berets...Dinosaurs from teens, the most miserable, ill mannered,up themselves corpses that wandered LS,BD,and YO postcodes. Metal Its the genre you Jazzers fear, because it out improvises you,and the musicians are stronger, and far far more innovative, both in note choice and equipment. And best of all.......WE AINT SMUG ABOUT IT AND CHICKS LIKE US!!!

The further symptoms include CPC (Cant Play Clean....it HAS to be distorted)

After many many years as a man in a mans body, and many many of those years as a man...Playing Bass,I announce that on this day,as I 'Come out' and join the resurgence of equality and fair rights for all, thats soft funishings CAN be beyond simple pastels, for the sheer obvious plus points, both in weight and beauty (Ive a Bad Back and a wonderful eye for looks) that I have gone HEADLESS!! AND WILL NEVER GO BACK......... Its brilliant, and my spines happy for me already.
Also, I know all you oldies like fretless bass, but you've got to understand that us youngsters associate the sound of a fretless with people who go to Paul Young gigs and call their bird "my partner". It just sounds so dated (dated bad, not dated good).
Same with me and chorus,It reeks of 82 and too much hairspray. Sean, the thing is Fretless has SO many many social flaws, and has that SAAB driver sneer thing,so few players actually transcend that, and no-ones done it to any degree in Indie/Modrock. Its why I liked Japan, the lines were original. (see I didnt say 'Phrasing')
Chaka's brother?
Not quite, its his stagename, but the AJ link is good. Now Anthony Jackson, theres a REAL innovative player...still doing his thang.
I can't improvise to save my life. I need to know how every song goes before I even remotely consider playing it in front of other musicians, never mind Joe Public. I also prefer to know why I am playing a certain note. I'm hoping that once I build up my theory then I'll know the right things to do. Right now if someone said "this is in the key of A" I just go "err, that's nice" and not have a clue how this information helps me. I think I need lessons. Either that or sell my basses and get a triangle. Basically I can't seem to let go and just have fun with the bass without fear of what the results will be. I've always been the sort of person who prefers to make his mistakes in private.
This is where a bit of ear training comes in handy, also in situ's like that, ask the keys player,if there is one.
Ha ha, Sorry to continue the "Bobby Charlton" negativity, but Alan Price certainly was a a**ehole the time I got to work with him. Hearing him sing geordie folklore songs should have made me beam with pride from my home area, not make me ashamed and want to pull the plug on the arrogant f**ker.
You aint the first ,Ive heard to say such a thing,Ive had a few tales from the lot at Minehead about, old acts, some are utter diamonds, some are bitter old gits... Mud always got a crowd going, one bloke from Bucks Fizz is a tosser,if you knew who wore a wig then and REALLY wears one now...weight gain,SHE SHOULDNT be wearing that at her age,....yep I bet you have a few.
I don't think it's that weird really, I know a guitar player who isn't fond of improvising and doesn't feel comfortable with the feel of a 12 bar or a basic blues thing, it's like they have a different opinion of guitar.
Yeah Like an almost 'Simple music Autism' Phish (Ok ...Mike Gordon) said they had played SO much odd time and 'out' there improv stuff, they could even play a simple 12 bar or 4/4 without a major cockup after a few bars...so for half a Tour they would always soundcheck old Blues songs.
-
Ive met a few Guitarists that cant 12 bar,Ive even taken one with me busking,to teach him,it was an education and fun watching him learn, and then I told him to solo...it was fun ("What do I do?"....'Anything'..."You Serious"..'Yep'.."But what if it sounds sh*t?"...'The moneys still landing in the Bass case,so I guess you and I dont suck so far')... We made enough to pay our fuel and food for the day.

Its not Polari...At least not in my vocab.
