With regard to music ground; i have hit and miss experiences in there for me (leeds shop), but once they had a pedal in and i asked to try it, they gave me some thing about it being really expensive so i just said "yeah i know, but someone is selling one for like half your price on some forum and i just want to test it out" and they had a giggle and let me have a go. but sometimes i hate being in there; when i asked for a onespot type power supply in music ground leeds, one guy told me it couldnt possibly exist and all this other stuff, and the same guy once told me he couldnt sell me a speakon to jack lead because that also didnt exist. i get much nicer responses and help from soundcontrol, so now if i need a quick lead or something ill go there. music ground has let me down loads, i dont even bother browsing in there anymore. One of the main annoyances is that certain members of their staff have always come across as automatically assuming that i know less than them, and when they're telling me that certain things dont exist (when i have it at home!!!) is ridiculous.
I find that has lessend somewhat as I got older, but it shouldnt happen at all,Ive bought a rig in the Leeds shop, and had to basically 'Duke it out' to get a deal on head AND cab,out of those guys, basically, what I thought I'd got off,was what other shops were selling it for....and I went to Electromusic in Donny to get the matching 1x15 (My Tech 21 rig)...But no-one else had them in at the time, nor could I get one....not unless I went to London, and I wanted a full rig..like...yesterday!!! Saying all that, there IS good advice in there, depending on who you deal with, and at what time of day....The fat Kid there is a bullsh*tt*r,and I wont even make eye contact with him,The older guy is ok,and knows his oats as does the other one, which often says "Hi" when you walk in,but It was an eye opener whenthe old old old guy,8 years back (who runs the show...Music Ground itself) once took me literally by the hand and spent an hour explaining describing, and showing examples of and differences between Gretsch Filtertron P/Us and the design of the 'Horseshoe' pickup by Rickenbacker...its history, and examples in music. He also showed me what "We were running around with in my day..." Handing me a Hofner Beatle Bass with Flats... I find if you dont want to get 'Attitude' in a shop, look them square in the eye,ask questions, have a 'Spot the bullshit' question (Mines Tulipwood on Luthiers) and dress well..being a scruffy cnut aint gonna get anyones attention..there are exceptions, but if you look like you have cash, then they will kiss your arse and call it ice cream
Are you sure it shouldn't be you who's giving the lessons? [unless you're trying to learn a very specific technique] BTW good reviews from the Rock n Bike Show
Yeah..thanks for that,Dad Lally was nice in his write up...You didnt watch us did you? You heard about some guy burning a V onstage and it landing on Lally Jr's £500 multicore cable...Graham (Our drummer, who was doing lights with Paul) said he'd never seen a CO2 extinguisher located and used so fast in his life! We are doing the Harley Davidson thang in Baildon this friday...hey have heard about some git cancelling our gigs, and then by sheer chance a band steps in,and its been the same band each time? I wonder if its been happening to you guys? On topic,lessonswise...well,you ever wondered exactly how good you are,or what gaps there are in your playing? What do I need/could I do to be better than the next guy? Well Ive been having that feeling for ages....Brush up on theory (but why I hardly use it anymore)..is obvious,as are techniques (but youtube is around for that, and I cant really tap in any part of "Shake your Tailfeather" ...Ive tried ).
In all fairness, she was very pleasant - friendly and knowledgeable. To the point where I actually reconsidered my stance on the place and almost considered buying a bass. Sad that she's gone and has been replaced by another bunch of ignorant muppets.
+1,she flogged me my Sansamp.....the bloke beside her said f*** all...they are rude bastards now.. Wunjo on the other hand IS amazing, some Asian looking lad got me a 6 string to try out...really really nice guy!

Throwing this one out. Is,in your opinion,£35 an hour too steep for Bass tuition, one on one....and Ive to travel to the place. No refunds, given the credit crunch times, should I just f*** it and buy a decent book, and watch a ton more youtube, play a few more gigs,to get better at playing,or just f*** it and go?

Im not a fan of his gear, but if you had the Number for Tech 21,I'd willingly give them a call.

Does playing covers sap your imagination and playing
ARGH replied to dabootsy's topic in General Discussion
Covers taught me to read charts,It also taught me how to fix on the fly a f***up,what good equipment was and was not (If its plastic, its going to break),its also taught stamina. I miss playing in an originals band though, but theres another thread about that.... -

Learn a whole lp over the space of a weekend...try it. Having difficulty learning a technique or passage or line? Quit swearing and curseing at yourself,or your instrument...put the Bass down,do something else....go for a walk, cook, drive, wanq, read a book (NOT a music mag or publication)whatever.... ANYTHING other than playing the instrument. come back later..half hour..hour..afternoon,whatever it takes for you to 'unfeel' the stress. Then return.you should have more success. Rome was not built in a day. Noodleing in front of the TV can do wonders for your creativity,as can Flu. Play unplugged around the house, find the brightest room, find the softest room, play on the stairs, play in the garden, just feel the open strings ring out. Every once in a while, have a week or two off* *Im having my 1st holiday from Bass in 5 years, its fun,its making me itchy to play again....havent been itchy in years.
Sure, if the criticism bothers you then just write and play something that will shut them up. If you can't walk the walk, don't talk the talk. In the meantime I think you should get over it. Most mature players learn to stay within their limitations and, like Amy Winehouse and her singing technique, they make the most of what they have. Limitations can add distinctiveness, just look at Jamerson and his hook. But thats off-topic and the rest of the membership has probably had enough of your 9 string rants already I suspect.
What is the point of this Steve? You speak for all now? "Most Mature players learn to stay within their limitations and make the most of what they have...." WTF is THAT supposed to mean? Reach point 'A',and stop? Please dont make it personal,Im learning,Im trying,I dont want 'limitations'....

I am owed an endorsement..... And NO WARWICK I WONT PLAY YOUR BASS'S
Frankly in terms of attitude, Anthony Jackson is probably worse. He insists of editing interviews, insisting on post interview insertions and pseudo intellectual langauge, his disdain is greater - he refuses to engage. Jeff Berlin on the other hand, makes time and goes out of his way to engage the 14 year old TAB stenographer. Larry Carlton was quite similar in attitude and approach, all were abrasive characters, except that Jeff Berlin is NYC Queens in your face abrasive. FWIW, he is honest to the core for all his abrasion. He walked out of Chick Corea's band because of the imposed Christian Scientist practices, whilst others would oblige for the gig. Sometimes in a business situation or to remain in a business situation you have to suck up to big time sycophancy, some people don't want to do that.
Adds to my point earlier. Jackson has also had to deal with notorious New York Jazz snobbery, right on the bandstand in some cases, and thats REALLY harsh in the Big Apple, face to face, even being refused by x or y musician to work with him just because of his choice of instrument....even the number of strings (Will people GET OVER THAT as well),he has been dramatically misquoted, and had his points twisted by press and players alike. Face it....to be honest this 'debate' of Berlin vs Bailey,is dead,it was sorted out a few years back,by both parties....,and to be franker everyones moved on,Victor Wooten is on Jeffs faculty at the players school and records duets/vids with Steve, the school is bigger and has more rooms (Ive a prospectus beside me right now) and is taking on more pupils,Jeff, unlike some actually makes a benchmark on what a good 'WORKING' player is,some may argue over taste, style, feel, etc etc,but thats subjective...Bailey teaches class's on technique,Jeff runs a school. Move on.
Are you telling me you learnt to groove from reading and not from playing with/listening to other musicians and at times consciously working on it? The point I was making is that Jeff Berlin is a twat for suggesting that groove is not important and that you should learn to read instead. It's not an either/or thing. Learning to groove/swing is f***ing important as a member of the rhythm section. To suggest it isn't is not just wrong - it's bad advice for music students.
Dunno, but I did wear out a few Sabbath records in my Teens.
-
I wouldnt change him for the world. He's an atypical brash New Yorker, and I love him for that, where I live they are the same...Straight up ,honest.....hard working people. That piece you quoted from was lifted from a Bassplayer interview.
I am not saying that reading music is not a beneficial thing for many other aspects of your playing. What I am saying is that you will not learn how to groove from dots on a page.
Quite a few thousand 60s,70s,80s funk, soul,R'n'B records would argue otherwise. As would a ton of session musicians, some coming from backgrounds that were not of the genre they were playing in or recording for. You play a line with a drummer, you cant help but lock up and 'groove'. If you cant ,you aint gonna be on the job. I know what you mean about classical players incapable of 'feel',and improv skills, but they can play...and they get paid.

Classic soul,The Who,Good Sabbath tunes..... BUT What makes me go all out ...."Kick out the jams" By the MC5.... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=E372fuerleM Rob Tyner RIP
