1. http://www.ctbasses.com/ I subscribe to Carl's ideas, given his experience in the odd and bizarre. Click on the interview that was the most recent,in the 'articles' section. My Fender P has rods in it,and its still got the same dead spots in all the usual places as all the other Fenders, some people say its more subtle, and I figure its because the Machine heads are slightly different. And it moves in summer/winter like any normal neck would,so Im not convinced by the Carbon rod idea...less wood in the neck doing what wood should do? If its laminated well, glued well, and selected well, then the problems wont really occur,I mean...necks have to move a bit, thats nature given the conditions at whatever time of year.
2. Eton Rifles..Just flowed..
3.
It's a bit strange for you to criticise establishments that offer serious musicians an opportunity to acquire those skills, when you say you'd like to be able to do the gigs that require that skill set, sounds like envy and bitterness to me.* There are some people in those places that have a the attitude you speak of but there are also plenty of really good ones that have gone on to cutting in the pro world having had the excellent opportunites colleges offer. I feel you're allowing some words (not all) out of your bottom sir.
Where did they study? The pros I come across didnt study at a fly by night, cough up for fame place...Most seem to be Leeds or London,or they came from the hard slog of Pubs, clubs,WMCs etc etc..It might be different where you are. Alot seem to have studied music since secondary school, sometimes Upright,or Brass or Cello...and simply jumped on another instrument,it was a hard slog, not a 2 year "Heres your Dip kid.." place. Considering Ive had the head of one of these schools,in front of me admitting he'd not had a session date for near on 3 years, and then I used to meet swarms of bods that talk a lot and play sweet fa on their instrument ,regardless of what it is...IMAGE CLASSES,for f***s sake, what the hell has that got to do with music,ok yes its business..and in the modern age you cant get away from that, but IMAGE over content??? If its looks that get you success, then why the f*** are we trying? How many crap Bands come out of these places..yeah ok a few have it...but the majority..well...I wonder if Bristols level of 'talent' will go down as the BIMM has opened there.I hope to f*** not because Damian Keyes is a really nice guy with a realistic vision, and idea upon education/expectation. When the guy that Interviews you and asks what are your aims...looks over your shoulder, quietly walks to the door, checks no-ones about, closes it and whispers "Go to London..they dont want to do that here" ..looking at you square in the eye. It makes you question somewhat. I CANT consider the majority of these establishments to BE serious...Its about cash....TOTALLY about cash, and false expectations, playing on hopes and dreams, yeah ok..play your instrument 8hrs a day 5 days a week, and you will get better, but it isnt an insurance of success..it just means you played your instrument alot,in the real world get a job. Get in a band and just play,it would save you a lot of time and energy, and expense, yes you will meet the great and the good, but they probably didnt go to a school. Ive auditioned for these places, said what my aims were, what I intended to do,and how I felt their curriculum would help me achieve that..then listed my experience and been told, straight up....That I would be bored within a few months. It makes me wonder... Compare Berklee's or Jeffs 'Players school' or even Leeds's curriculum to say another 'Modern/Popular music school' Schools based on methods that work...Teachers trained as teachers not 'Ex name player' that can push record button or looks good onstage and has hung out at/with who/whatever...thats not education. Consider this,in WORKING terms, who would have in a band..the 21 year old thats done 2 years at school, and can play all the licks in and out,but has never toured, nor played to any room bigger than a small theater witnessed by his own comtemporaries (yeah spelt wrong) teachers and a few friends/relatives and has ALL the gear nice and shiney. Or the Kid thats done 2 years gigging Pubs/Clubs/WMCs,Weddings,Functions etc,and has the ratty rig and Fender? *Ive wanted those lessons,Im doing summat about it too..and it was stupid AM when I wrote the post, sorry fella.
4. Alot of the comments are from fear when they see an ERB. The problem is in the mind. Though I have been playing an awful lot of 4 recently. One thing I TOTALLY recommend 7string,is get the LIGHTEST tuners you can, trim as much weight off as poss,My P Bass is Heavier than my 9,why ERBs are heavy as hell by some makers,is a problem I dont understand??? I guess its wood choice or design. Rodswise, talking carbon,Im no builder, but if you have good wood surely you dont need them?
5.
Pretty much, it was described to me as the band 'Imploded' I got to see them though, it was a monumental gig. I later then toured and recorded with Ike and Bobby Martin. Seperately. Edit Sorry this is OT Jeff Berlin is a great player, but I wouldn't buy his albums or invite him for tea.
Thunes reckons the band was jealous of him being given, unlike the rest of the group,Cart blanche,to play whatever, wherever he liked.....the only other being Frank himself. The way it comes across, from his POV is Frank would rather have him than the band, but Scott was not willing for that sort of pressure...Saying that anyway,he was really young at the time surely, and that sort of sh*t can screw with you. (This being what Ive read in the few interviews of him.....where is he now anyways? Amazing musician...awol)
6. Look at Mick Karn, cant read, cant tell you what notes he plays, cant explain the fingerboard for sh*t..... TOTALLY brilliant player, with a distinctive voice (difficult after Jaco's shadow) Thats toured over the world and sessions to this day.
7. Basically alot of people have a problem with Jeff,Because he's right. Music education HAS become fast-track..you can have it now..FAME FAME FAME..Bullshit so called 'Music schools' (ACM being the most guilty in the UK) and magazines. And its intolerably crap,I know a dozen kids that can tapola and slap till the sun goes down, but cant play a basic line, and stick it out with feeling for love or money.....Its technique, without the knowledge,to be honest,I think alot could /should save their cash, get a car,a decent rig and coverswork for a few years, its taught me a ton more than a classroom ever did....Because its doing it,and if there isnt the bands around, get a record and play to it. Now Ive HAD to read on a gig,Ive not had to sight read...yet...because I dont play in those circles,But I sure as hell would love to,coz the pays a damn sight better than what Im on right now gig to gig. I wouldnt say his public display of opinion,is arrogant...I mean How else can you critique,AND, get your point across,as these so called 'Great Bassists' are doing by their ways of expressing opinion? Sitting at the back and murmuring wont do squat. Anthony Jackson is INFINITELY more cutting to the point where he wont do interviews with some magazines because they sell sh*t to the lowest common, without a care for its musical value. My fave 'Baileyism' was the 'Squeezing a tennis ball' idea.....I see it on here sometimes, now and again a kid threads up saying "How can I play faster/build up strength" and people offer all sorts of ideas...and hey ,yeah, thats ok,but its not getting to the point...you wanna get faster/stronger playing Bass..the answers simple..Play the f***ing Bass, you want strength, slap on some heavy guages and play, yes its gonna hurt...it will do,but after X period of time, its gonna stop hurting, because like any exercise,it builds strength/stamina/and speed. People dont like Jeff because,he makes his answers to musical problems as simple and as easy as the magazines/schools/Teachers that flog the simple "fast fast fast BE GREAT NOW",Only his answers require effort, and actual application, and time.
8. I break them alot,I play alot, although Ive calmed down onstage in recent months..I used to smash out my anger and go through a set every 3-5 gigs. Ive broken all strings, all notes, all guages...I prefer Heavy 110s,they can take the punishment.
9. Covers bands having a 'meeting'.....We dont have meetings.....oh dear
10. After playing blistering soul set, followed by Rock, and a a Bit of the Who,I get the nice comments, and get asked.. "Wow,you really know how to play Bass" Me.."Thanks..Glad you enjoyed it" "Yeah,What Bands do you like to listen to to prepare for this sort of stuff.." Me.."Throbbing Gristle" The Blank look of 'What' is worth it everytime...
11. Contact the company direct.....
12.
lol I'm PRETTY SURE I can't.. lol!!
Bollocks you've given birth...
13.
What happens if you lightly saute them with a little butter and shallots?
Not as crazy as you think, the Philly guys used to marinate theirs in butter to deaden them even further.
14.
Its supposed to me to do with some chemical reaction between the metal of the strings and the metal of the pan or something, but I doubt theres any serious health risk to it.
You might suffer a Nickel allergy...Considering a cheap pan...you ARE using a cheap pan..not mum/wifes/partners best Teflon job,coz she WILL go mental...as in really SPAZZ,like the time your dad used a Metal 'spatch' on the new frying pan...God..it was as if he'd started WWIII....you remember...stainless steel isnt going to harm you. Coz last I heard Stainless steel and Stainless steel didnt have a high reaction rate.
15. Hugehands When the question of booze comes up,Im polite, straight, and honest,I dont shove it down anyones throat,or play the martyr, its just in ...and this is sad as f***...Metal,bodiliy self abuse seems to be the norm, and if you dont drink or hang out taking drugs, you must be gay....or into sh*t wimpy metal...yep its that f***ing immature sometimes... Ok to be serious,I went clean,as of new years, and have had massive problems with alchohol, and some drug usage in the past,Im not some born again self rightous soapbox guy,Im just a bod that dosent drink,I play in pubs,I dont want to go to them for any other reason,I dont want to drink..I dont feel the need to drink,or spark up a joint,I have never met anyone that played better in a rehearsal room whilst intoxicated, and neither have I seen the same on stage,so thats my call, but its an issue when I just ...politely...say "No"...body language changes....I sense it,I know its there... If on the rare occasions I get abuse,as I have done for being 'straight',I just point at my gear...then my car...then my house...then...you get the picture, all the money goes there, and I dont want to feel I literally 'Pissed it against the wall' because in the past I have done, and paid for it. Ive never been invited to the pub by a band, nor refused a drink in an aggressive fashion, but I have had aggressive reactions, for doing so. As I said, you dont know the tossers Ive known...
16. Just rinse the pan afterwards, you can be shocked at the amount of crud that comes off a set. some people bake them dry,I use a teatowel, and then rub them in a swab,it freshens them up and gets a little extra gunk off.
17. Roar it,....growl as if you want to kill! If Andrea from Arch Enemy can so can you!!
18. Ok for the record,I have NEVER gone to an audition with the 9 string.I have a 9,I try to play the 9,and yes it is a talking point on ads,and Ive pics of me with the 9,and Ive played it onstage...BUT IVE NEVER GONE TO AN AUDITION WITH MY 9 STRING...EVER!!...ok....NIL...NADA...Fretless twice,P-Bass the rest...ok...that clear.... Attitude. Its something Ive wondered,am I coming across as to shy,quiet,loud,aggressive,chatty..ect etc. I cant answer that question, though Ive noticed atmos changes when I say "no thanks I dont drink",and that seems to lead to a problem...I dont drink or smoke,I dont take drugs,Ive done all that, and Im not interested anymore...some people do have a problem with that.I am a nervous ball of energy somedays, but in the last year Ive curtail'd that,Im expressive,as opinionated as the next person, and have my fair share of what works and what does not work,in situations.....I do get funny looks when asked "What effects do I use?",and the reply is "Cable",and Ive gone through the era when the word 'Fender' was a dirty word and Im still using one,and its ratty and modded to hell, but its faithfull....and its all Black. I,actually, think its a problem that alot of these bands I audition for, dont actually know what a Bassist does, because, and this is by the admittance of several of the musicians/bands Ive auditioned for, they have never "Really had a Bassplayer" as in what they mean ,they've only had a guy/girl plod along root hugging, and thats it...They've never heard harmony,or a drone note under their riffs,or ever had somebody play with the kick rather than the guitars.Maybe thats all they want, and I can accept that, but it isnt Bassplaying in my book, its guitar hidden an octave down. Co-incidentally,a number of bands Ive auditioned for are still looking ....so good luck to them,I hope they find what they want, because to be honest I dont think they really know. Now I know to some my confidence in my ability seems like arrogance, thats just not true.....I wont sell myself short,Im not a god either, but I CAN play, and I CAN sing, and I play Bass, and Im proud of that. Now image sells, and I accept that and cant change that,so if the face dont fit, thats beyond my control, but if all they want is a drinking buddy to go and buy dope for them,Im not their man. Sometimes you will get bands which is (Usually guitarist) "My way or the Highway"...as in "I write everything..and you play it...and thats final..." They've been goooooood,VERY good in some cases, but, usually, guess what,Im root hugging.....and I can hear in my head, what would make a better line, but its not my gig,and its not GOING to be my gig,because,I...well....I dont drink etc etc etc,so I let it pass. Having 4 strings and a succession of 4 string thickies (as in BassOWNING Guitarists, that have no ability to play let alone musicality to question what they are doing or affecting the sound and songs around them..plus they make better, flush?? drinking/smoking buddies) before me with 'hidden' lines, its a little restrictive,Im not gonna tapola,or slapathon,or widdle....Im going to play, but I would prefer an equal voice, and no that dosent mean Im going to steamroller in and changing stuff and slagging riffs,Hell I like the riffs, thats why Im in the f***ing room in the 1st place, but our instrument deserves to be played properly, and played well. I guess that 'different' thing they are looking for ,is the same as before, and Im not the same. As for the Paranoia,You dont know the idiots Ive worked with in the past. I think it goes well.....I try to fit in,I try to play well, play the lines they want,or what they have asked for ("Something like Black Sabbath..or Cliff Burton"??) And it still gets me nowhere.....4-5 years in,and still nowt, cut me some slack,You would get the 'fear' too....
19. Try an extra long Hercules,BUT they are fragile,Ive never had one I didnt break, they dont like heavy useage. BEWARE OF PLASTIC PARTS!!! other than that Doc's 'Hanger' stand idea is the best yet. Co-incidentally is the REALLY pointy 'Dean' Available still, the one 'Schmier' from Destruction used?
20.
Selling...after all that waiting? You're fookin mad!
Jase,I cant be f***ed anymore,As Ive said,Ive had enough, there ISNT the musicians around to play it with,I dont want sympathy,or to come across all petulant, but I look at it and see 'New Kitchen' or 'Patio'. Ive offers on my 6,and Ive interest and offers on one of my fretless's. I genuinely think that someones putting the word out about me,in a negative sense.
21.
A band showing interest?
Nope, got my hopes up..all silent...oh well. (Just put my 9 up for sale locally,£3k if anyones interested)
22. Ok,check this out,I got asked for a photo....(fingers crossed)
23.
Weird that type of thing, all goes well and.......nah, not what we're looking for! It doesn't take long before you start asking yourself WTF is going on, is it worth all the nonsense? Oddly though, we keep going back for more.
Which brings us back to my original point,Its just bastard rude, you are left high and dry,and you dont know what you are to do? Ive learnt 8 songs in 5 days, nailed them, been told I was the "best they had had all week" and then recieve the email of rejection. I have come to the conclusion, where I might just ask,"Are you really bothered..?"
24. 30,full pro rig,4,5,6,9 string,fretless Bassist Tour/Studio exp,Transport,seeks Band. Infs:-Butler,Angelripper,Lemmy,Ron Royce,Ain,Edling,Harris. Sings too.....
25. Last night & today I scoured all the websites (partysounds,Formingbands,Bandmix etc),reupdated my details, any extra info,on what I can do,and into....put new ads up....I seem to do this EVERY 3 months, its quite depressing me. Worryingly there ISNT anything about, unless I was 15 again,It saddens me,but I scan for hours, and cant find anything or anyone with much in common, once again, covers and covers/Indie/pop punk bands galore, but nowt else. I feel slightly doomed,as Ive had a shot in the sun and botched it.....Where did all the bands go.
