1.
Hmmm... How's about you forming your own original metal band, then? Make sure it's the best in the West Yorkshire area! That way you can hand pick your own musicians. That's what I've done with OutToPlayJazz - I have a "bank" of the best musicians & singers I know up and down the country. And in The PHD rock trio we're all equals - All technical players at a very high standard like yourself. Rich.
Sorry Rich, but I dont want to come accross as a c*** but.....What do you think Ive been doing for the last few years. I was auditioning for a band that was metal as f***,but the Guitar player just vape'd and joined Doods band. I was probably crap, but I wish was told so. The isnt anything of any note within 20 miles.....Im willing to travel further..but STILL theres nothing,Ive travelled round trips of 300+ miles for a rehearsal, thats how desperate and willing I was. I just hate being lied too,I hate feeling as if its going right and it dosent, and I really hate myself feeling this way.
 2. Right, its afternoon..and Im still f***ed off. RE: "I wouldnt hire a guy that brought a 6 string to an audition".....I can respond in two ways, one being,If they downtune to say Low B..or they ask for AT LEAST a 5 string..Im gonna bring the 6,I dont just bring out an instrument to impress anyone. Most times its as Ive said ,the Fender. If you have a problem with people with more than 4,its your problem...simple as..I cant help you,you have to change. The other response is shorter, and obvious.... I dont want to form a band,Ive been doing that,Ive been doing that forever...its part of the problem,I want the problem to go away,Im stopping playing, the problem is going away..... Fitting in.....Maybe being an alchy, drug using twat, might get me somewhere, maybe being sh*t might help, maybe being always late to gigs/rehearsal,with a pissweak excuse will get me success, then again I think not,but hey its an avenue.....Because thats what I seem to be auditioning to replace?!? 'Are you in fact Rubbish' Yes ,this HAS actually flown through my head, but I cant be.....Im earning, and getting kudos doing coverswork,so I cant be sh*te,I genuinely think its maybe...fear...Bassists dont have ideas,we just dont,we just plod...doing the same sh*te over and over again, and never go beyond root 5th,maybe an octave on special occasions. Ive been called many names,by many people, for having an idea in the past, whereas I just shut up now (oh the teenage years) and watch them just fade away.....I can play,I can play very well, after aeons of trying,I cant get an originals gig, story end of. Adrenochrome...You are in the same circles as me,and you KNOW that NO-ONE wants to write original stuff, its all for cash as soon as you pass 30,and thats just sh*te...I put an ad out on the ROTN (He'll know) do you know how many responses I got...1..f***ing 1...and acres on debate of weather original material goes down well on a gig that pays (f***ing what???...has the whole area NO imagination, why did ANYONE pick up instruments when they were kids...My mate asked a covers singer who's 20,"Dont you write original stuff" to which the reply was "No",with a look of 'Are you stupid or summat') . Leeds is sh*te,Bradford's sh*te,Wakey's sh*te,Dewsbury's sh*te...even the small out of the way places have NOTHING (Wetherby,Ponte,Fax). The names that made it 10-15 years back, have given nowt back or they are cliquey in extremis, all bullshit, and arsekissing...Even Birstall had a signed act once...its all gone. Im tired. Im sorry.....
 3. Yeah, this is a bad one,Ive just woken up,and Im still angry. And it isnt my Bipolar either,I actually have a reason, and Im still pissed. Phoned my guitar playing friend and ranted,he understands,Im gonna take 6 months out, mothball my gear, think about my options ,both socially and educationally, probably quit...take the money and run. You cant lose if you dont take part.
 4.
I was thinking on going on one of Victor Wooten's camps for a bit of sideways thinking about playing. I'm a pro (classically trained), but I still don't believe I know everything What kind of music do you really want to play, ARGH?
My heart beats to the volume of Metal,as much as I hide, and like other stuff....my tone always needs a little dirt and distortion.
 5.
I wear leather in my world gig, and the words are sung in Zulu! Castleford? Thought of moving to a more happ'nin' place? Not saying anything bad about Castleford you understand.
The nice American and I were discussing this..and .....yes I consider this, property is only object after all. I look at study in Florida..Canada..Germany..Texas. But its pricey, and I have nightmares of everytime Ive turned up for an interview at a Uni/college....but its just a consideration.... Anyone wanna buy some pedals?
 6.
There's more tripe than caviar....deal with it
dealing....
 7.
Hey, this sounds kind of familiar. But , I know that in my case it's because I play a bass that has more than the 'normal' amount of strings, and is kind of an odd shape. I've auditioned for about 10 bands in the last couple of months, all function bands with loads of gigs booked, all to no avail. I can read music, I learn stuff really fast, I have transport, pro gear etc. One keys player said 'Wow, what is that, I don't even think it's physically possible to play that is it ?'. I just thought.......... knob. He's stood behind a whole stack of keyboards, thinking he's Rick Wakeman or someone, drinking a can of Redstripe, sorry make that middle aged knob. To be honest I wouldn't have played for them anyway. Two others have said that they were 'looking for someone with a more traditional outlook'. I do play in two bands anyway, so I'm not too fussed, but it is kind of annoying. You'll eventually find like minded musicians to play with.
Yep ,been there,Ive even worn different clothes for each audition (leather on a world gig...I dont think so). What is a traditional outlook? Uninspired 'dead' guy at the back that never smiles or escapes root-5th?... Im blessed with the coversguys Im with because they wont let me onstage with anything less than 6 strings now (thats a buzz). I can add that EVERY keys player Ive played with has asked If ive got a 5 string, and encourages me to play one.
 8.
Whereabouts do you live?
West Yorkshire.....Castleford.
 9.
1,Don't take this the wrong way mate, but it appears you are not really interested in answers and opinions regarding your original question, but that you are having a bit of a sound-off about something you feel you've got no control of. You've got to get out there and be a bit forward, on all sides of the stage. Don't just f*ck it up and give up. It sounds like you need a life coach at the moment, not a gig. 2,Can you explain what you are really looking for in a gig? Someone said, "A wise man makes more opportunities than he finds." and it's bang on.
1,Yes,Im having a rant..I have no control, and its a pisser. 2,what most of us would like,a happy ,musical intercommunication between X number of persons onstage ..in a free, yet structured..creative way. Making music thats both rewarding and challenging..Im not interested in cash.....I dont want money,Ive a coversband, and job for that...but I want to play,play..play... Ive done the jam nights, and the open mics....tell a lie,I get asked by coversbands if Ive a gig,and I have to decline, because I do....But never any original work. I get nice comments, "You are really creative as a player" "Man...you play all of the instrument" "Your better than 'our' Bassplayer" (Why not ask me for the gig then..arrrgh). Its nice...its great, but it dosent seem to lead to anything,no matter how much I persue.... Sorry Lads and Lasses,Im being right negative tonight. P.s...the shyness is a lie. Ive no trouble chatting, ask the northern Bassbash guys...and the Dr.
 10.
Lots of people want a simplistic plodder and are quite often frightened that a good bass player will steal their thunder. Sounds like you're way too good for the people you're auditioning for, if you're asking me. Real musicians would give bodily organs for a good reading technical bass player.
Where are they? Really....Where the f*** do they hang? Because Ive been looking for them nationwide, and all I find is different levels of c**ts. The older Gen round here just want to play covers,or wont do ANYTHING unless its for money..seriously..the love of playing, the challenge of writing has gone. Its utterly dead. I was chatting to the Good Dr (Dave) the other day about originals bands have no stamina they blow out at 1/2 to 1hr onstage,I can keep going all evening, and get up and do it again...night after night...Hell Ive earnt it..the 4 walls I own has been mostly paid by music. Ive got the transport, the gear.....the 'Hair',the knowledge,as it were...I learn fast,I play tight and well (ok..I THINK its well, but yourself aint the great barometer for how good you are). And after near 2 decades of playing, its just become a job... How does Modification affect the price of a Yankee P Bass?
 11.
I would'nt do anything drastic like that. you know you are going to regret it. why not try forming your own band, you do the auditioning! that might work.
Sorry fella..read the opening post..Ive done that to death, and nothing comes of it,and no-one wants to make the effort,I know thats defeatest, but Ive had no luck,in years, and its got to the point of hopelessness, those that were friends, that have made it,treat me as if i was a piece of history, and that hurts but hey...thats what it takes if thats what it takes. Ive NEVER been approached about a gig,Ive NEVER been asked ever to play for anyone. No chicks,no glory, just money, and a few smiles. Im not saying Im golden,Ive had deals, great laughs and been an utter prick to boot..But its just f***ing awful now, when a Child molesting rapist Class A using twat can get a tour around Scandinavia scott free all expenses..and I dont have a pub gig for 4 weeks because the guitarist has a sniffle... Its very f***ing difficult having a conversation with a friend thats just finished 4 months in Europe and USA when all you can say is..."Fuels gone up here" (Jealousy is a nasty little monkey that clings tight)
 12.
Why??
Because,I genuinely feel Im not gonna get a shot again, some people say be satisfied with what you have, but If you've lost it all,or had it taken from you,you miss it...you really do...And theres no point having a roomfull of instruments for all occasions, when those occasions just dont occur anymore. To be frank,Ive really had enough.....
 13. Lets put it this way....Ive started to sell off my gear.
 14.
What kinda bands/genre are you going for auditions in? Si
Pretty much anything,from Metal...to Indie,to world....seriously,If I like it,I want to do it.
 15. May I just add,Ive been punctual, and Ive heard them winge about how 'unreliable' and 'drunk' their previous was.....And i have communicated, told a joke...etc... Maybe if I was drunk and f***ed up on dope,or whatever and have tats and peircings..or a floppy haircut, and played a sh*tty rig and Bass I'd get in....(Now Im just being bitter)
 16. Bruce Thomas.....'Olivers Army'..the chorus descending line...
 17. Ok,So Ive auditioned for many many many many, original bands over the past few years..and in weddings/functions work I can clear up,its easy, sometimes fun, sometimes a complete drag, but hey,its cash, and Im using my gear and making someones evening...dancing their butts off.Its nice,Im in a band and I have an amount of fun. But then theres the 'Original' band....I must have forgotten the politics of Right,so can someone tell me what the f*** a Bassplayer does in an 'originals' band, because by obvious right,I cant be doing it... Im walking in the audition,or sending the cd,or writing the part that they ask for (recent clue was "We want it to wash in"???),keeping it together..whatever...,no..Im not playing the 9 its usually my P or a fretless (If the sounds right) or my 6. Ive washed,I dont drink or get smashed on drugs (I think my straight life has been a problem) Keep mouth shut, watched whats going on,nailed the kick down...held back..gone all over the shop when asked...Is it my age (26ish..ok...30).... The ego's in check....the best response Ive ever had from a straight out "Well what do you want?" was "Cliff Burton"...I read,I harmonize,I support,I lead..I I I I ..me me me..arrgghhh.And they really want to replace the dullard that just root hung, badly, with somebody thats capable of writing..playing..etc..but you end up with "It sounds...er...different.." Ive tried forming band after band and every musician flakes over time..no tell a lie..DRUMMERS flake..guitarists dont..or they cant solo,to the point where I was almost in tears last night, and I had some nice Yank Bassmag Journo guy at 2 am,saying I should move areas or country....and was willing to write a piece on me and get me contacts (Nice guy!!!). Another said I should just say f*** it and be a soloist (I would, but Im shy...and the stage is so big). If I played GreenDayesque punk I would have no problems,But Im a bit further down the line for that (not to be a swine, but its a bit...not me). The lack of return feedback is making me paranoid,Ive winged before about people just not getting back to you re:emails, cds sent..whatever,or after the audition..I cant be that scary a guy..I only play Bass after all,but it seems as if you have an idea....or write a line beyond root notes... What am I doing wrong?
 18.
Quickly back on to the subject of 27-string basses: Do you guys who own them ever take them out of the house? I just can't imagine getting a gig anywhere
Yes we do,We put them in cases, like you,but they are slightly bigger.
 19.
Back... still does it through pedal and headphones unless I turn one of the dials (Tone I'm presuming) riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight down.
Cheap pre-amp i suspect??? I thought you, given the music would like distortion..
 20. Have you cranked the eq?
 21.
+1
+1 as well. difference being they are famous,we are just working Joe's
 22.
So it's ERB's as we know them today...around 86? and Low C as Jennifer mentioned 66?
It depends on what you want to call an ERB in the Electric Guitar sense. I go on the 7+,as 6 is really not unusual to see these days.Early 90s really.
 23.
I thought Ken Smith was one of the first to make ERBs?
If you are talking 7+,Bill Conklin was waaaaaay before,I believe,If you are talking 5s its possible, but Carls been building for longer, and the 6 was created in the mid 70s (Jackson says he had the idea for ages, but no one was willing to make it). If Im right Ken's 1st 6 was for John Patitucci in 86 (Chick Corea's Elektrik band) he received it on the Sunday..and left his Jazz bass at home and did a 6 month tour, straight off with it. The Bass turns up for sale every now and then in the New York area.
 24.
Yes. And I did a search for the AC adapter and guess how many etailer that sell the wireless sell the AC to go with it?
Less than zero? Like the people that sell the Tech 21 footswitch.
 25.
1,Isn't the first ERB a 5 string? Rather than 6+? And do extra frets count as ERB? If so... how many? Because then a 4 string can be an ERB D: And no, it isn't on topic ;p 2,I can't think of any bassists with negative effects that haven't been mentioned off the top of my head to be honest :/
Given that,Red Mitchell, tuning to 5ths is or was ERB,But seeing as a Guitar has 6 strings, and its only the orchestral link that Electric Bass (thats links me to the 'Leo' problem) convention says 4 strings,I put the bar at 7+.I think the 6 actually came first, but Im not supersure about that. But Im a zealot on a saturday night,Today is sunday. 2,Neither can I,There will always be someone that will copy a technique,or try to make a sound in a different fashion, some people will decry and some people will make a cornerstone of that style/ability.
