1. I've had issues with Pyramids twisting and going dead (they sent me new ones), and a dead Optima Gold roundwound B (still not resolved that one). Different people will prefer different ones but I've generally found happiness with Fender 9050Ls (surprisingly affordable). Those or Chromes (which are pricier).
2. I have a MK I 6 string, it was my first bass. Amazing instrument. I now prefer less massive basses, but every now and then I take it out of its case and am reminded of what a fine piece of design and craftsmanship it is.
3. I believe all unmodified Attitudes are passive. This is mine.
4. Sire sure are producing some crackers - if their V7s weren't so weighty I would certainly have one by now! Hoping their upcoming PJ is on the svelte side. That M7 looks gorgeous.
5. I know it's not a BB, but my Attitude Special is a smudge under 4kg. Has a split P pickup and a neck woofer, 40mm nut, and a sort of J shape with less rounded edges.
6. So I have a Samick MCR1 bass lying around, a very cool little P with a 24 3/4" scale. I'd love to put some flats on it, but don't know which ones would possibly fit. My favourite flats on long scale are Fender 9050Ls (I have them on my Fender 61 P and my Yamaha Attitude Special) and D'Addario Chromes (I have them on my Dingwall Super P5)... not such a fan of the thumpier ones like the TI Jazz Flats (which I have on my Bravewood 56 P) or Pyramid Golds. Any recommendations? I know using long scale flats on a short scale can sometimes result in breakage.
7. I've shared this to his timeline in case someone he knows fancies it.
8.
Happy Jack, if I am not mistaken, you can string these with a B as well as with an E.
Indeed you can, at 34.25" it's perhaps not as thunderous as the 35" of the 5-string Super P or 37" of the long scale Dingwalls, but it's still great.
9. Short / medium scale, roasted flame maple neck, active/passive, compact 2+2 headstock. £499?! That's amazing.
10. You've done all right for yourself with that one!
11. Don't forget that on a J-Retro, the bass is boost-only... so you actually want to turn it all the way down to match levels.
12. Change the title of the thread and the mods will lock it
13. No worries. I know when I spoke to Newtone I had a chat about different core sizes which influence tension.
14. The one reason I can think of for not buying it is that occasionally they come up for sale secondhand, and those are ASTONISHING bargains.
15.
"Feel" is quite a difficult thing to quantify. From my own experience, I bought an EBMM Sterling that was strung with slightly lighter strings than I usually used and it didn't "feel" right- it too felt quite cramped. Changing to my regular gauge (45-105) made a surprisingly big difference.
That's what I'm wondering myself.
16. No apology necessary! It's hard to know when people ask questions like this whether they are experienced or newbies. My warped logic is that a thicker string such as a tapewounds would mean that the gap between my thumb and finger is bigger, and would therefore feel more similar to a thicker neck. I know it's only fractions, but such are the margins in feel between thin and medium necks for example. I know I had an acoustic neck refretted with jumbo frets and the difference in feel was HUGE.
17. Alternatively, I'd highly recommend speaking to the guys at Newtone - great strings, nor expensive and they are very helpful with specific custom queries.
18. These basses are terrific, I love mine. The new owner can easily order a new scratchplate from Roger via their online shop in a colour of their choice... mine is tort.
19. Thanks for the input guys. I have quite a few basses and don't have cramp issues on the others (Dingwall Super P5, Dingwall Super J5, Sadowsky MV4, Fender 56 P, Fender 61 P, Yamaha TRB6, etc) even for long sets, and this one is set up really well - it's actually very easy to play, I just find it tiring for my hands. It's an SRFF806 and Dave Swift loves his so it's not a problematic bass, perhaps it just doesn't suit my particular digits. Shame ):
20. So my Ibanez SRFF806 doesn't seem to be moving at the moment, and it got me thinking: pretty much the only thing I don't love about it is that the neck is too slim and is causing my hands to cramp up when playing it. The spacing is great, it's not heavy, I like the way it looks and sounds. So I had a thought - what if I put some big strings on it? I don't necessarily mean heavier, I've been thinking of trying some tapewounds like the La Bella Gold White Nylon Tapewounds. They're quite a bit thicker, and I like flatwounds anyway (I have them on all my P basses). Logic seems to dictate that it will make the neck feel thicker to my hands and fingers. To the people who have done this - does it work out in practice?
21. I'm going to guess that's a John East J-Retro preamp. Quite some score, I am envious!
22.
The quote was quite a bit more than I thought Maybe I don't need nitro?
How much, out of curiosity?
