1. No apology necessary! It's hard to know when people ask questions like this whether they are experienced or newbies. My warped logic is that a thicker string such as a tapewounds would mean that the gap between my thumb and finger is bigger, and would therefore feel more similar to a thicker neck. I know it's only fractions, but such are the margins in feel between thin and medium necks for example. I know I had an acoustic neck refretted with jumbo frets and the difference in feel was HUGE.
2. Alternatively, I'd highly recommend speaking to the guys at Newtone - great strings, nor expensive and they are very helpful with specific custom queries.
3. Might be worth looking at some Kaliums?
4. These basses are terrific, I love mine. The new owner can easily order a new scratchplate from Roger via their online shop in a colour of their choice... mine is tort.
5. Thanks for the input guys. I have quite a few basses and don't have cramp issues on the others (Dingwall Super P5, Dingwall Super J5, Sadowsky MV4, Fender 56 P, Fender 61 P, Yamaha TRB6, etc) even for long sets, and this one is set up really well - it's actually very easy to play, I just find it tiring for my hands. It's an SRFF806 and Dave Swift loves his so it's not a problematic bass, perhaps it just doesn't suit my particular digits. Shame ):
6. So my Ibanez SRFF806 doesn't seem to be moving at the moment, and it got me thinking: pretty much the only thing I don't love about it is that the neck is too slim and is causing my hands to cramp up when playing it. The spacing is great, it's not heavy, I like the way it looks and sounds. So I had a thought - what if I put some big strings on it? I don't necessarily mean heavier, I've been thinking of trying some tapewounds like the La Bella Gold White Nylon Tapewounds. They're quite a bit thicker, and I like flatwounds anyway (I have them on all my P basses). Logic seems to dictate that it will make the neck feel thicker to my hands and fingers. To the people who have done this - does it work out in practice?
7. I'm going to guess that's a John East J-Retro preamp. Quite some score, I am envious!
8.
The quote was quite a bit more than I thought Maybe I don't need nitro?
How much, out of curiosity?
9. The basses are carbon fibre too.
10. Not sold yet as I don't think the offers have been worthwhile, but have just been busy with work and haven't had the opportunity to get it out to take a photo with a sheet of paper just yet. Will get around to it, but to be honest I'm mulling just keeping it as it's worth more to me than what I've been offered so far (: Ultralight tuners and a Nordstrand pickup that I have lying around and I reckon it might give my 61 a run for its money for a fraction of the cost... and even less weight.
11. You can easily get a short extension cable made.
12. Most people opt for a high C because it means all your shapes (scales etc) remain the same.
13. I'm not sure who Camden Guitars are, but they consistently mark their prices up to double what they should probably be. My TRB6 is in MUCH better nick than that one.
14.
I know the myths will probably never die, but Fender since 2008 is not the Fender of old. I have an Am Std Jazz V which is a very decent bass. IMO worth every penny. I just tried out a new Am Pro Jazz V and it was a cracker. It felt good to play and the pickups sounded very good. An excellent sounding 34" 5 string bass. The problem Fender have with the new range is that people don't equate them with expensive instruments. The complaint is Fenders cost too much, but these are far better basses so why should they cost peanuts.
Post-2008 Fenders are a lot better than they used to be for sure, I actually really rate the Japanese ones in particular. I wasn't suggesting they should cost peanuts, but I would certainly argue that for the same money you get more from most of the other super-Jazz makers. For the price of a Custom Shop Fender you are looking at a Sadowsky Metro, a Mike Lull, a USA Lakland or an Xotic. For the price of a Masterbuilt you are looking at a Sadowsky NYC etc. The Fenders are good, but IMO they're not in the same league in terms of craftsmanship, wood quality, features etc. Tone is of course subjective.
15.
How often does it need to be fed, and why doesn't it need a knife? At least it's not vegetarian
I thought you were talking about my cat at first! She's definitely not a vegetarian. 😁
16. A few people waiting for the end of the month, but no one has put a deposit down so still available at present.
17. Looks like £219 to me, definitely a copy. https://geek.wish.com/m/c/56d8e83f52ebf016955b3a34?force_native_view=1&app_deep_link=Z2VlazovL2MvNTZkOGU4M2Y1MmViZjAxNjk1NWIzYTM0
18.
I don't particularly get the 3rd-party super-Fenders; I think they should get a bit of imagination and do their own thing.
They're for people who like the Fender style but actually want a really good one.
19.
thanks guys, this is really helpful. Currently I'm favouring the NOS US Ps. I've played the one in Hickies and it's niiiiiiiice. I do appreciate that there are some great basses on here, and I hope I'm not offending anyone by preferring new if I can get it. Is there anywhere in the south that has stock of the MIM 50s P? I'd quite like to get my hands on one.
Not offending at all - we just suggested it since you explicitly mentioned secondhand in your OP (:
20. It makes a good DI and preamp box for recording. I have a few useful profiles such as the REDDI one which sounds great going direct.
21. Still getting interest on this but no one has bitten as yet.
22. Cheers guys. Yes, she's an absolute beauty and amazing to play but I can't cope with new instruments... just to scared to play them!
23. I have a fantastic, lightweight Japanese Fender FSR Classic 60s Precision up for sale at the minute that is within your budget. It's in the For Sale section. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/295819-2015-fender-fsr-classic-60s-lacquer-precision-olympic-white/page__pid__3211938#entry3211938
24. I thought that might be the case. Is cutting from a template difficult?
