1. The question "Are they worth it?" also usually depends on the price premium (: £30 extra per pickup over stock import pickups? Probably. £200 extra per pickup over handwound Bareknuckles? Obviously not.
2.
traded
Phew.
3.
Nice bass. I'm thinking of dropping Photobucket for that reason.
I pretty much stop reading an ad now if it only has a Photobucket link. If I'm really interested I ask the seller to put an inline image in. This is stunning btw.
4. Asking price is getting a little silly now, Lawrie!! I badly wanted a six string Jazz a little while ago. If this was a couple pounds lighter and an inch or so shorter in scale I'd be VERY tempted... Have a bump on me, pal.
5.
Ok so Ive just taken the plunge!! Whats the Worst that can happen when you buy from Thomann B stock ;-)
Ok, glad you did. Was tempted to pick it up to compare with my Ibanez and Dingwall fanned frets. Seems crazy for £315!!
6.
Weight 4.5Kg (9lb?)
4.5kg is about 10lb. 9lb is about 4kg.
7.
Is the sunburst what you have (or will) replace it with?
I have the sunburst now.
8. It's glossy but has that slight stickiness to it. To be honest if mine doesn't sell, I'll stick a Nordstrand in it and have it as a backup to my 61.
9. CTS tend to be the pot manufacturer of choice, with Spragues being the capacitors.
10.
That's all really super useful - I will deffo contact John and see what he charges. I'm hoping my dad will find the original but I have a fear it was just cast aside back in the day (he removed it for aesthetics but personally, never thinking he'd have a son that would ruin is career and then want his bass WITH the guard ...) If i get modern controls/pots put back on it, will John also be a good guy to go for?
Yup, I have CTS and spragues on two of mine.
11. I'd consider a fanned fret instrument if you like the high C but find the tension causes tonal issues. My Dingwalls are 35-32" scale, and the 32" scale makes a big difference to the G and would make an even bigger difference to C strings.
12. I've played 5 with E-C tuning and now play B-G. Both are great for slightly different reasons. I still like six string.
13. Count the holes and you're most of the way there. It's the bridge pickup that moved between the 60s and 70s. I still think John does the best aged Fender pickguards - I have three instruments from him, two with Bravewood repro pickguards and one with a vintage guard. They're incredible!
14. 73s have poly finish so less delicate than nitro if you want to try cleaning it properly.
15. Quite wanted an Ashula - hope one of these comes up secondhand!
16. Also, I'm guessing the bass itself is completely passive? Are the recordings through the pre?
