1.
theres no structural damage, just chips in the lacquer but now I know theyre there my OCD dislikes it. Weight reduction sounds like a good idea though, would love to hear ideas.
Strip the finish, thin the body, refinish in oil?
2. E to C is easy to do, you may not even need to change the nut. I used to go back and forth between BEADG and EADGC on my Stingray all the time with just intonation tweaks.
3. I would totally put a tort guard on that!
4. I walked into the Sadowsky showroom a year ago and had the chance to try out all the electric guitars they had in their demo room. I fell in love with a light blue Strat which is definitely not the one I would have picked based on its looks. Two days later I was stressing about checking it onto the plane...
5. Don't think so, Bassdirect is the place to try Dingwalls in stock. I've never been though, got both of mine (and the one I had before) secondhand.
6. Hello mate - where are you based by the way? Is it Made in Japan, and can I ask what it weighs?
7. I'm not normally a fan of white on black, but this is very very cool and I'm definitely having a think.
8.
Have to confess I've only refretted my own in brass. Instruments I've done for others tend to arrive in a bad way with poor frets causing buzzing and other noises, so I'm not in the best position to say. What difference have you heard between them?
They have a slightly more metallic ring to the note attack. Not always a bad thing, but a more modern sound. String bending is a different level with stainless though - effortless.
9. Do you sense much of a tonal difference with stainless frets? They sound different in my Strats.
10. I started on six string - and a very wide six string my TRB6 is! - and consequently am equally comfortable on 4/5/6 string bass. I don't play too much six string any more though. I tend to take my 4-string Dingwall pair (Super J with rounds/Super P with flats) on gigs where there is some more modern music that would benefit from the low B (and where I can get away with the more modern look). On gigs where a more classic look is appropriate, I take a 4-string pair: my Sadowsky J with rounds and a Fender P with flats. Pretty lucky with the selection I have now!
11. I'd quite like a P/J with a neck woofer a la Billy Sheehan. My Attitude Special has the P thing going on, and you can mix in the neck woofer for additional EB-style low end.
12. Same - my Super P5 is my go to 5-string these days. Between it and my Super J5, my five string GAS is as under-control as it's ever been. (the vintage 4-string GAS is a separate matter)
13. Superglue fix worked a treat. This thing just sounds fantastic, I finally got a chance to sit down and do a quick and dirty little demo. Recorded with no compression or EQ straight into Logic via the DI input of my Audient iD14... had to be a little Vulfpeck! https://instagram.com/p/BOacditBEXD/ https://www.facebook.com/JohannTingMusic/videos/10154952252782932/
14. Was literally going to comment on the bridge positioning. Does it have side dots? If so, which strings does the intonation work on?
15. I prefer the 55 onwards with the body contouring. I have a 56 Bravewood which is pretty damn cool. I think there's a Sting signature on Gumtree.
16.
I have to say I don't agree at all that most on an instrument's sound comes from the Electronics though. If that were the case we'd all be playin the cheapest Chinese copies with upgraded pickups and pots because the wood and craftsmanship would be immaterial . . .
Obviously it does contribute, but I'd rather play a Squier with Custom Shop pickups than a Custom Shop with Squier pickups is all I'm saying. Ok, I've derailed the thread enough. To address the original poster, I'm afraid I don't know as I haven't ordered a custom instrument from the FCS as I generally buy secondhand. If they don't do what you are looking for, then something along the lines of Warmoth parts assembled, finished and finessed by a good luthier may be your best bet. I've toyed with doing something similar to Tim Lefebvre's Callowhill (I've probably misspelt his last name).
17. Interesting - since most of an electric instrument's sound is in the electronics, what pickup did it have in it out of curiosity? I've got handwound Bareknuckles in all of mine. I'm not disputing your experience by the way, just curious.
