I have upgraded the pickups to the improved B Booster type as used in the Combustion II costing £150. The original pickups come with the bass too. I acquired the bass firstly to ‘scratch an itch’ regarding the fanned fret system (of which I am now a complete convert ), and secondly to try my hand at a 5-string (rather less successful ). The bass is now for trade for something with 4 strings (or for outright sale). As for trade options it’s probably easier to set a few ground rules and then see what turns up:[list] [*]Must be a 4-string please [*]Much prefer a natural finish or a burst [*]Nothing too heavy, up to about 9lbs or so max [*]Fretted or fretless [/list] Cash either way is fine although I would probably prefer to trade up rather than down.     That's a real shame, it's plain to see that you have invested significant time and energy in the band and I hope (meaning feel sure that you will) find a new project quickly. The music is not my personal cup of tea I'm afraid, but I can see that the band deserve a decent following. If I'd been closer I would be there to support. Best wishes to you all.

    The search continues. The Chromes were too heavy / stiff for my liking. If only the TI365s came with a sensible gauge B string...

    For sale a very lightly used D'Addario Chromes, gauges are 45/60/80/105. These were bought as single strings to get the more balanced tension that I prefer. The strings spent approx. 4 days on a bass with a 3 over 1 tuning peg arrangement and a 34" scale length. [size=4]The string lengths are (from G to E): 42"/44"/43"/42".[/size] Thanks for looking.

    Talked myself into believing one of these Dingwall basses would be a great idea. It's a 2009 Combustion 5 in absolutely immaculate condition (from Mark at Bass Direct). So here goes... First impressions: Well put together; not too tricky to adapt to bearing in mind I have minimal 5 string experience as well; the neck feels great, very slim top to bottom a bit like somebody has stretched a Jazz neck sideways; the longer scale strings have a much bassier tone to them, just acquired some super long Chromes that i'm going to fit. If it's a keeper then I'm going to do something interesting with a new preamp too. [attachment=157610:Dingwall Combustion 5 02.jpg]

    I think there is some info on the dirty ash finish in the ACG threads in the Affliliates section but I can't locate it at the moment. My bass has a lacquer finish on top of the stain. You can still feel the grain though.

    Can any of my learned colleagues advise whether the onboard Sadowsky preamp will fit a bass without a metal bellplate, i.e. are the pot threads long enough to go through a drilled holes in the bass body? Thanks!

    Ended up ordering some super long Chromes singles as couldn't find anything else that might have worked. Will report back in due course.

    Not much help on the Dingwall forum either. I notice there are some Payson ground wounds available, but the choice of gauges is very curious as the string tensions will be all over the place.

    Anybody in the BC community used flats on a 5 string Dingwall (34" E to 37" ? I'm guessing it might require either single strings purchasing or mixing up sets...
