1. Pardon my ignorance, but what's a greasebucket?
2. I might be very tempted by a pre-loved top end Ibanez SR 4-string.
3. You don't even need to wait for this one... http://www.acguitars.co.uk/acg_admin/wordpress/portfolio/g0013-finn-4-string/
4. ACG Graft fretless. New one with SEQ filter preamp (they work really well with a fretless bass) yours for £1,100 + P&P. http://www.acguitars.co.uk/acg_admin/wordpress/graft-specification/
5. Bond bird from Casino Royale.
6. One of my basses is an ACG passive P/J, nothing startling there, but it has a four-way rotary switch so that I can select bridge p/up only / both p/ups in parallel / both in series / neck p/up only coupled to a master volume and master tone. For a passive bass it has a real variety of tones and is really flexible. It's this one, and a new one (not in this finish) would set you back around £800 depending upon options etc: http://www.acguitars.co.uk/acg_admin/wordpress/portfolio/2881/ I also have a G&L Tribute JB-2 that currently has the two volume controls plus a John East BTB stack replacing the tone control (the battery fits into the cavity nicely so no additional routing required). I'm going to change one of the volumes for a four-way switch as above as I think that will make it really flexible. ACG will also do this for you in a Graft spec for around £900 depending upon choices etc. You can't blend the pickups but that aside I think this is a really good way to get that kind of flexibility. If you fancy grabbing your passport and crossing the pennines you'd be more than welcome to come and try them out.
7. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/216456-bass-collection-sgc-nanyo-fretless-4-string-bass-for-sale/page__p__2202611__hl__sgc%20nanyo__fromsearch__1#entry2202611 Phew, total senility not quite yet arrived...I'm sure a reasonable offer would secure this.
8.
Also keep an eye out for an 80's/90's SGC Nanyo Bass Collection. They've been undervalued for years now, and prices are just starting to creep up for fretted basses, but I imagine you can still pick up a fretless (if you can find one) for £200 or so. The quality for that price will blow you away.
+1....I think there's one of these on here iirc? The first fretless I owned was an RBX270F, and for £90 that was a great way to get into fretless playing at minimal cost.
9. Definition of an expert: X = unknown quantity Spurt = Drip under pressure
10. Maybe try Bettye Lavette to, quite bluesy at times too.
11. Paulo just acquired some Sadowsky knobs for me. Excellent comms, pleasure to deal with, a real gent.
12.
Despite the disclaimer, how about the P-bass is a 911 because the design has remained basically the same over it's entire lifetime...
Apologies, no reading glasses on and completely missed the 6 point font size disclaimer! ....911 - I presume you mean apart from the move to water cooled engines, 4 wheel drive, automatic gearboxes, weird glass roof thingy and all the cosmetics? I'm a massive 911 fan btw, especially the early ones that tried to kill you every so often - or maybe I'm just a rubbish driver...
13. How can a P bass be a 911, it's hardly a mass produced instrument used by the full range of musicians and made in different parts of the world? Both iconic, but that's as far as it goes for me.
14. There's a Peavey Zephyr on evilbay as we speak...(not mine I hasten to add).
15. Sorry can't find anything, I thought it was on an old invoice but sadly not.
16. Probably got a number at home...will check later.
17. I've never really tried one for any length of time, but they do seem to have a hard-core following. The ones that I have seen in the flesh looked well made and sounded pretty good so they must definitely be a contender (at the right price I guess). From my perspective the best value basses I have owned are probably a Peavey Zephyr (£125 for an immaculate neck through bass), and an Antoria Jazz I acquired for £100, although it did get a refinish and a Kiogon wiring harness to replace old slightly knackered one.
18. Live dangerously, try something else I am particularly enjoying the D'Addario balanced tension sets at the moment, nickel so a bit warmer but are still nice and bright and the lower strings have a real piano like quality to them.
19.
http://www.ebay.co.u...ME:L:OC:GB:3160 Arrived today
Nice basses the Zephyrs. I had an NT 4-string until fairly recently and a new Kiogon harness transformed it as the pots were a bit too scratchy when I acquired it. Love the V/T plus V/T set up, like an un-stacked stack-knob jazz bass.
20. Luckily the http://manchesterbasslounge.com/ is very near home
21. Alan at ACG get his ramps made by Williams Guitars, so maybe worth looking them up?
