1.
Strange reply, since the balanced tension strings aren't exactly completely new like the new 'flexsteels', but rather their standard strings in different gauges. Essentially all they have to do is just pick their gauges and packaging and they are pretty much there.
You could alway create your own set from single strings. Alternatively Circle K do steel BT sets or Ken Smith.
2. I think there is some info on the dirty ash finish in the ACG threads in the Affliliates section but I can't locate it at the moment. My bass has a lacquer finish on top of the stain. You can still feel the grain though.
3. This is the dirty ash finish on my ACG bass, but not sure how it's done. Maybe Alan could give you a steer? http://www.acguitars.co.uk/acg_admin/wordpress/portfolio/2881/
4. I enjoy all my basses, even more so when listening to other talented people playing them.
5. Great thanks for the info. I make that about 9.5mm so might just be enough.

Moffat Bass Bash 7

Have just traded my G&L for a fanned fret Dingwall beastie (sorry Alan couldn't help myself). Will bring it up so you can all point and laugh at me.
7. Can any of my learned colleagues advise whether the onboard Sadowsky preamp will fit a bass without a metal bellplate, i.e. are the pot threads long enough to go through a drilled holes in the bass body? Thanks!
8. Ended up ordering some super long Chromes singles as couldn't find anything else that might have worked. Will report back in due course.
9. Not much help on the Dingwall forum either. I notice there are some Payson ground wounds available, but the choice of gauges is very curious as the string tensions will be all over the place.
10. Anybody in the BC community used flats on a 5 string Dingwall (34" E to 37" ? I'm guessing it might require either single strings purchasing or mixing up sets...
11.
I've been using proper Dunlop Straploks, not the plastic ones, for 25 years. Never had a problem. If you can find Allparts Straploks they are Dunlops at about half the price.
+1 for Dunlops in metal form.
12. Oooh Matron....
13. +1 for ACG. Your best bet is to get in touch with Alan, tell him what you're looking for and he will give you an idea of the cost. Top bloke to deal with and really helpful.
14. Distance Selling Regs are your friend. You have 7 days to cancel an on-line type order.
15.
Shame you have to book an appointment. They do have a Sandberg 5 though.
Another fan of MBL. I like the appointment system; Drew will accommodate odd times and you are guaranteed to have his undivided attention rather than him looking over your shoulder to see who else may have walked in.
16. I have a set of Fender CL9050 flats on my JB-2 Tribby. Playing rock etc. Good combination, imho obviously!
17.
Middle with black scratchplate
This works for me too.
18.
just a thought...does the difference here refer to the string tension 'cos some of the gauges are the same..unless it only refers to the G string?
The numbers refer to the E and G string guages on the 4 string sets. If you look at the websites for the retailers it will show you the guages for the whole set and you will notice a few sublte differences between the different sets. 19.
Yes, I found that. I did think it was because 50-100 are closer in gauge than 45-105, but I believe CLs are 45-105, so obviously there's a different reason... perhaps to do with compliance... are the CLs particularly low-compliance (i.e. high tension)?
I think it is because Fender picked the guages particularly well for the CL (Custom Light) set at 45/60/80/105. I don't think they are particularly high tension at about 45lbs on a 34" scale, and to me they feel just right. Some of their other sets in the series have somewhat curious guages selected.
20. CL9050s for when I can't afford TIs. Nicely balanced tension across all the strings.
21. Ancient thread resurrection... The pickups mentioned here all seem to have the longer casing in the bridge position. Are there any noiseless Jazz with the same size casings neck and bridge? If not would buying two of the appropriate size be the same thing?
22. Paul just acquired a BTB unit from. Everything exactly as promised good comms etc. Thanks very much.
23. Looks like a beautiful bass. On the price thing, the price is driven by what somebody will pay for a good or service and can be relatively unrelated to the cost of producing the good or service. So if a $10,000 swing ticket still results in sales then that is probably the market rate for that thing with that brand. So very subjective, not sure I'd part with $10k for a bass personally .
