1.
Try All American Alien Boy by Ian Hunter, he does the same on there too.
Thanks for the heads up. Is that Ian Hunter as in Mott The Hoople?
2. This of course is a serious distraction from Plan A Mr Eude. I'm sure it's your fault... Just trying to imagine the reaction if I wheeled it out in a pub in Burnley
3. Not sure if this qulifies as a daft question or not, but do the ACG SCs in general have the asymmetric neck carve?
4. I'd go for a separate vol/tone stack for each pickup - like an old style Jazz. Passive blends don't work for me.
5. There's some nice fretless playing on Joni Mitchell's album Hejira. Jaco's work but very unlike his other stuff.
6. I have a brass nut on one bass, and tbh I dont' really notice much difference.
7. Normally I'm not a fan, preferring flats on a fretless bass. However I recently tried a bass strung with SIT Silencers that I believe are branded as pressure wound strings and was impressed with the tone that they produced. Maybe worth considering as a further option.
8. Great review. Welcome to the ACG club.
9. Yes it was weird what went on, not that I know other than what I've read. I've always hated the "Yes is a business" thing too although I suspect it may the case to varying degrees with many of the shall we say 'established' acts.
10. Interesting stuff. I admit to being a convert to the 'hand made' bass, and in respect of this thread my personal frame of reference is the ACG Graft bass (the basic spec). Still made by hand but to more limited options and choices. The come in around £800 or so for a Jazz type passive bass and imho are extremely good value when compared to the something like the American Standard Fender range that is still pretty much a mass produced bass that seems to retail for c. £1k. I appreciate that the full custom basses are a bit marmite and so live and let live on these, very much a personal choice. I have also enjoyed really affordable basses like a £110 Antoria Jazz which was really good (but really heavy sadly) so very much appreciate the other side of the argument. It's great that there is so much choice around these days and hopefully all bassists can find and enjoy an instrument that fits their budget large or modest.
11.
FWIW, Jon is one of the few singers of that era whose voice hasn't deteriorated over the years. I've only seen Yes once but have seen Jon at his solo shows and his voice is still astounding.
Most definitely. I'm a serial attendee at Yes / JA solo & some of the Rick & Jon shows. I think he's not been well of late though hence the concern.
12. Just like Genesis after they released Trespass. Just a bunch of deps really.
13. Hey Sam Just put my Spector NS-94 on evilbay, but the auction finishes on Monday and if it doesn't reach the reserve / sell then you would be most welcome to borrow it. Feel free to PM me if it would be of any use.
14. Very nice indeed, it'll be a cracker like all ACGs and great value for a handmade instrument.
15. I've added a couple of preamps to different basses, the best outcome for me was adding an Audere Classic pre to a fretless bass. It lifted it to a much better instrument imho as I felt I could get more out of it tone wise. The other successful mod was a Kiogon twin stacked knob kit to my old Antoria Jazz - made a huge difference to the 'quality' of the sound, due I suspect to the quality of components and grade of wire used. I've put flats on a few basses but I'm not convinced that's a mod as such.
16. Looks great that. It's Friday surely you can claim time off on religious grounds. Or better still still a medical emergency......GAS. Edit. I thought I recognised that body, it was going to be mine until Alan waved the Dirty Ash J Type at me...
17. I hope it's not becoming fashionable. I managed to spend most of my life trying to achieve an unsurpassed level of unfashionability and I don't want to fall at the last.
18. It's a nice bass that Warwick, Mr BB very kindly let me have a noodle on it along with a number of his other Warwicks. Enjoy the fretessness, it's addictive I think.
19. I think it's one of the classic finishes as per above contributions. Personally I'm really not a fan. I like natural wood, it's has so many varieties, colours, grains and textures it just seems a pity to cover it all up - unless it's cheap and nasty of course
20. I've never tried Gumtree or Preloved. Easy to use, any good? Slight thread hijack, sorry Mr BB.
21.
I've had more luck in selling, at higher prices to boot, on eBay recently.
I have noticed this too. I can't really rationalise this, as my perception was that the prices on here had been higher than ebay, as well a not having the fees to pay on BC. The last few basses I have sold were on here for ages and then sold almost instantly on ebay despite me jacking the prices considerable to cover the fees. Yes the buyers may be less well informed on ebay, but I suspect that this is not the case so much now. Maybe BCers are expecting too much of a bargain in these economically challenging times.
22. ACG. You'll probably have a few hundred pounds change too.
