1. I've courierier three basses so far without incident (one to Greece), probably shouldn't have said that... Latterly I have taken to delivering them myself even if it's a three hour drive each way and costs a bit more in diesel. Some buyers seem to appreciate it, others just look bemused.
2. this feels a bit like an offshoot of the 5 basses to play before you die thread. Although I'd very much like to try many of the above, I'm not sure that if I owned them I'd play them enough. So for me something homegrown (ish) Could be tempted by one of Les Claypole's fretless basses though.
3. Black wins my vote.

Gigs

I tried to lover 5ers, but in then migrated back to 4-string basses. There is no doubt that for some songs in some keys you can avoid some traveling up and down the neck and play more in a given position. Other than that you get a few extra low (or high notes), generally tighter string spacing and a bit more weight. So as you can see I'm not a convert and I'm curious as to why you are being pushed down this road. There are many fine bassists playing 4s in most genres of music and probably nearly as many playing 5s. Not sure about 6-strings though, unless you maybe do a lot of chordal work?
5. OK here goes: 1. Your year of birth bass - any flavour, for me it would probably be a 1960 Fender J stacked knob (well I'm sure about the 1960 bit at any rate) 2. A full sized double bass 3. A rediculously expensive bass - I'm thinking Ritter or something similar 4. A proper (as in unlined) fretless bass - My preference would be something like my ACG with asymmetric neck carve and full filter preamp, but I appreciate that this would not be everyones choice and other flavours of fretless bass are available 5. A bass currently owned and played by one of your bass heroes - for me Chris Squire's Rickenbacker, but he'd have to promise not to listen
6.
Can you see the difference between saying you don't like a band or don't see their appeal, and just flatly slating them? I'm fine with the former, but tend not to listen to those who do the latter. I would say you drifted over that line, and I suspect you would not respond graciously if someone was to describe your own music in similar terms. DV's guitar is kind of crude and rudimentary, but I think a lot of folk get off on the vocals, drums and sheer energy of the thing. There's nothing wrong with that!
Well put.
7. I've heard a lot worse in pubs and clubs. May not be to everyones taste (looking at the post maybe that should be no ones taste) but that doesn't make it cr@p. Look at many of the punk bands, I went to seveal gigs in the 70s where half the band couldn't tune their guitars, couldn't play in time and didn't evn know the songs that well. Now of course some of the these bands have been commercially successful and a lauded as musical heroes. Who know what the future will hold for Deap Vally? Personally I suspect that the CD will probably not find its way onto my shelf.
8. Got a few DT CDs so if you want a loan just let me know.
9.
My favourite is Slack Babbath - no points for guessing who they are a tribute to!
Beat me to it. We supported them in Burnley once.
10. You buy one, I'll buy one and swap?
11. When I was a growing lad I played the violin up to a pretty decent standard. This inevitably meant reading music, theory memorising complex pieces etc. Now that I play my bass 95% of the time what I find weird is that whilst I can still read treble clef (G) notation easily, I really struggle with reading notation written in the bass clef (F). I have no idea why this is. Maybe I should have studied the piano instead.
12. I have recently put a set of D'Addario EXL220BTs on a bass (40/55/70/95) to try out some lighter nickel roundwound strings. They cost £16 and in my view are a good compromise between the lower tension and general playablility. I like them.

P or J?
Rick on the neck pickup with tone half-rolled off, flatwounds, mutes under the strings, played between the pickups with a pick through a Vox 710 or 715 head and an open-back 2x10 (or 2x12) cab, distance miked from six feet with an AKG C12 in figure 8 mode and overdubbed in an empty studio onto the track through an EMI Redd 37 or 51 desk with an Altec 436c compressor and a Fairchild 670 compressor. Possibly a smidge of ADT in the background to thicken it up.
Is this any good for metal?
14. Kiogon on this forum made me a twin stack knob arrangement for my Antoria Jazz bass (inc new plate). His work has chocolate block screw-in connectors for the pickup wires. Should be easy enough to add some chocblocs to your exisiting Jazz and then you have the simplest of changeovers imaginable. Please click on the link in my sig for some pics. I think this setup works really well as you have so much more flexibility than the standard V/V/T. My have different cap values for each tone control to give that bit more variety.
15. Excellent news Mr BB. Obviously I'll need to be informed of forthcoming gigs!
16. Me again (sorry), any particular CD you would point me to?
17. I thought you lovely BCers should know that the new CD by this band is really rather good (if you like progy things with a hint of Jazz about them). Our very own shemeckfrac is on low end duites. Check 'em out of Facebook. As you were.

No2 body pretty much done, bass in finishing now so hopefully not too much longer to wait...
21. I have heard them mentioned in conversations along with bands like Dream Theatre but I've not heard any of their output. Worth a listen?

Luckily as a teacher Mrs ead eschews all the social media
23. Where we play less than 10% of the venue have a PA so it's pretty much a backline with a small PA for the vocals and acoustic guitars Plus being an old git I'd need somebody to teach me slowly and patiently how this stuff works assuming the band could afford the kit.

Here's the first pic of the body (which obviously is not mine) for the bass I clearly didn't order - just incase Mrs ead has discovered this website
