Most of what I've said about playing bass on here is bollocks.
ead replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Occasionally thought provoking, sometimes controversial, not convinced about the bollocks personally. I don't always agree with you but I do enjoy reading your posts. Don't beat yourself up, others may well be less conscientious. -
Or this, he said shamelessly plugging his own bass http://basschat.co.uk/topic/211316-fs-antoria-jazz-bass-mid-to-late-70s-vintage-mij-only-l175-ono/page__fromsearch__1

For me the Bowie album and Big Big Train. I have also bought and listened to a number of CDs from earlier years that I have just discovered but I suppose they don't count.

Hogarth/Barbieri - Anyone going to the Scala gig in Sept?
ead replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Kinda depends what you're into since they've gone through a few different transitions. I might venture to suggest Fear of a Blank Planet, In Absentia and (if you like prog) The Sky Moves Sideways or if you don't then check out Stupid Dream or maybe Deadwing - although there is one very proggy song on it. I quite like the live CDs too as they pick some good songs from a number of CDs. Maybe try Atlanta? Hope that helps...probably doesn't though -

Not sure if I'm going. I think I need to listen to the album a bit first. Big PT and Marillion fan though... -
Goodness, must dig out my LPs, not listened to VdGG in ages - good shout by the OP.

Interesting read, possibly a couple of items I would not agree with, but just my views really. Other possiblilities might be: Weird duets, maye a bolt-on to weird arrangements. Once you've made it never playing smaller venues like you used to. I have pretty much stopped going to arena shows as I feel no connection to the band anymore.

SOLD After much soul-searching and inner contemplation I have decided to sell this Antoria Jazz bass. At least three BCers have played and admired the bass and hopefully at some point they will drop by and confirm this. I believe the bass was made by Fujigen Gakki, who were responsible for MIJ Fenders. The traditional J pickups rather that the earlier version that had p/ups that looked a bit like humbuckers would indicate mid to late 70s. The 3-piece neck and fretboard are maple with vintage frets and nice block inlays and binding. When I acquired the bass it had a rather unpleasant black finish. This I decided to remove as I had heard these basses had mahogany bodies. Sure enough they do, but it is a butchers’ block with a laminate in the middle rather than a solid 2 or 3-piece body. Hopefully the pics will show this. I have copious images of the refinish process if you are interested to see them. The bass is now finished in Danish oil and to my mind is very attractive – clearly that is subjective. The bridge was replaced by the previous owner and is now a Wilkinson item with brass saddles. I have upgraded the electronics with a Kiogon manufactured twin stacked knob setup (including a new plate and jack socket) per the early jazz basses. A great bit of kit and gives the bass a good range of tones. If you have any questions at all, or require additional pictures of any details please ask away and I give as comprehensive an answer as I am able! I think this is a good quality and inexpensive jazz-a-like bass for which I would like £175 ono which includes a good quality Sumo gig bag. The bass is currently strung with Fender 9050CL flatwound strings; super-smooth and creamy tones. For sale only, no trades at tis stage thanks very much. Edit: Forgot to mention that the pickguard is a replacement item. I have the original white one that will be included with the bass.

I think copper (or similar) foil works the best, but it does take a bit more effort. If all the gubbins are out anyway then it's really pretty easy.

Options for an after market preamp with filters like wal or alembic series?
ead replied to donkelley's topic in Bass Guitars
Just wondering if, as the SEQ seems to be the replacement for the EQ02, it will be available as an after market option. Simpler to use, 3 knobs (one stacked), could be a useful addition / option. -

+1 for the ACG preamps. Once you get the hang of what they can do there's no looking back. I have to declare an interest at this point as I have the 5k EQ03 in my fretless and the new SEQ coming on my next ACG. -
One of my fretless basses has a 35" scale the other a 34" scale. It made life interesting at first, but I got used to the subtle differences in time with practice. I can now play out of tune on both scale lengths without difficulty.

I've heard it said that the MIJ cakes of a certain vintage are very tasty too.

According to some a Fender cake would have been better

Visit to Mayones Guitars and Basses, Gdansk, Poland
ead replied to bjelkeman's topic in Bass Guitars
Great post, very informative as the people have said. Thanks very much. Suggestion for the next BC visit - a couple of the Italian luthiers? I'm sure I've seen one or two on here...I speak the language so happy to volunteer. The only barrier is that Mrs ead seems overly keen to go to Venice rather than hang around manufacturing workshops. Don't understand this myself, I told her that the parking is a nightmare due to the persistant flooding problems. -
..... I tuck my shirt around my belt buckle for f's sake....
Thank God, I thought it was just me Good luck with the repairs, I know I'd be gutted if it happened to me - not a big fan of the road worn look.

Never tried the full OW experience, only the Tanglewaters and I think they were really good. I suspect the full custom basses are pretty special.

Is a defretted bass , as good as a fretless ?
ead replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
I'm with bluejay. Assuming a decent quality of workmanship I think the side dots would be weird, but maybe that's just me as my fretless basses are unlined. -
I find them very addictive I must say. Not fully assimilated into the collective as I also quite like the bumps occasionally. Slight divergence if the OP doesn't object, but out of interest do people prefer passive or active on a fretless bass? Personally I'm in the active camp. My ACG has an all singing all dancing filter EQ and I've just popped an Audere pre into my Letts bass and to my ears it improves the tone.

Trailblazer? For sure. Can't beat a Fender? Very subjective...

Just fitted a set of the EXL220BTs (40 55 70 95) to the Spector to try them out as they are broadly similar in gauge to the TIs on my fretless basses. Initial impression is good, but I need more playing time as I haven't really used roundwound strings for a couple of years. I also have a set of the EXL170BTs going onto a fretted bass currently WIP at ACG.
-
+1 for the Fender 9050CLs. The TIs would be quick a radical shift after the Steve H set.

Just a quick report on the recent installation of one of the Classic range (no Z mode switching) in my Letts fretless. http://www.audereaudio.com/Classic2.htm I went for the custom configured option with two stacked knobs, treble/bass EQ and volume/tone. I have to say that I am very happy with the results. The preamp is actually quite subtle which is exactly what I was after. I have landed on boosting the bass by c. 50%, the treble by a bit less (say 25%) and then rolling off the tone just a nadge to keep the overall warmth. The low end is now much better defined to my ears and the overall sound of the bass hasn't been changed a great deal, just evened out, so very happy with the results. Not the cheapest option I have to say, but in terms of the easy of installation and sound a good buy (imho of course). I had seriously considered the East BTB but having an active tone on my ACG bass, I really like this feature within the preamp.
