Fender is certainly iconic, but being iconic doesn't necessarily imbue greatness. Plenty of examples out there of icons that are not best in class but survive none the less.

People buy from people. For me it's all about the staff and they you are treated whether you are Jaco or just old Jack. For things like strings I pretty much buy on line now because it's so easy. I imagine that if you try to stock every brand and gauge combination that people want you could end up with a lot of slow moving stock. Simple Pareto analysis will tell you that 80% of your sales will come from 20% of your stock lines. It then depends upon whether you want to take that risk with customers. Tricky decision at the best of times. I think a good preloved section would be interesting although you're up against ebay et al which is pretty pure in terms of establishing what the real market value of main stream goods really is.

Does the fact that by and large these strings are pretty heavy gauge that the tension is correspondingly high or is that just the effect of the wrapping?

I thought I might try a set out. Do any of you fine people have good/bad experiences that are noteworthy? The ones that immediately spring to mind are the Rotos, D'Addriao and Picato offerings, but I presume there are others out there.

I prefer the slightly lighter gauge Fender CL9050s at 45/60/80/105.

If I had unlimited funds I'd love to own a Ritter bass. Enjoying the aesthetics of your bass imho is part of the pleasure of picking it up to play and practice. My personal choice would be the Roya body shape.

What's been said really from my point of view. Try and play sympathetically with the feel of the song and with what you hear and don't overplay early on as achknalligewelt said above. I love writing originals with our band - far more than playing covers. Carpe diem.
