1. I use a fretless as much as possible. I still have the fretted ones that I use in some of the dodgier pubs we play in as a couple of them are at the low end value wise compared to the fretless basses I have.
  2.
When you are given a new song to write a line for, how quickly do they usually come to you. How do you go about the process of writing your lines? Do your lines get changed?
Interesting poll. Our band works on a pretty collaborative basis so somebody will bring along an idea be it a riff a chorus a couple of lines of lyrics and then we try and work out how to turn it into a tune we like. We often have one of those in you pocket type recording things to capture ideas. The song will evolve over 3 or 4 practices by which time it will either be a keeper or one that goes to the bottom of the pile for more thought. Could have used a few more options on the 'sort' of music as I think ours is neither simple nor complex - depending of course on how you define simple and complex.

    ACG build

A deposit has been paid to a gentleman in the Moffat area. Details to follow. I knew that taking Mrs ead to the MBB was an inspired idea
  4. That will be a 'No' then
  5. I have a P/J, a J/J and an H/H and once owned an J/MM and to my ears they are all distinctively different. I can imagine that a P/H might be pretty similar to an H/H, and I wonder if that is the reason that there appear to be proportionally less of them about.
  6.
For me there's no such thing as a guilty pleasure, if I like it I like it and I'm never ashamed to say so.
Absolutely. Taste is such a personal thing, and imho there's no such thing as good/bad taste.
  7. Not sure if this thread should be here or in the repairs and technical. On balance I think here. Anyway, does anybody have experience of basses with a Precision / Humbucker pickup combination. If so any observations etc would be of interest. Thanks
  8. Pics added by request via PM.
  9.
Don't ring my bell sorry the Spinal Tap ref is not a good thing IMO
Sorry, but I'm with this really.
  10.
It's not a question of how many were made, but the number (probably still high) and condition (perhaps in many cases a bit ropey) of those that remain. As you say it may be that this one is towards the bottom of that pile anyway. If not, by modding it, rather that selling it and buying one of the many other excellent P/J's that I'm sure are available, you're arguably depriving someone of the chance to own an old thing that would be special to them, even if the item is not quite at the level of being of historical importance.
Fair point, and as the owner of a 70's bass I should probably declare an interest. I bought the bass in question for £100 because I fancied one of the old Fender MIJ knock offs and then promptly spent a bit of dosh on stripping it back to the wood(s) and upgrading the electrics with a Kiogon loom. This will probably have destroyed any residual value but it's a nicer bass for it imho.
  11. If it's my actual playing style, then something along the lines of: Homer Simpson plays the blues The 10 most inappropriate tunes to play fretless If it was my aspirational style that would be a different matter...
  12. I have just acquired a Levys strap from Gareth. Everything ticketiboo (or however you spell it), plenty of PMs and follow up. Deal with complete confidence. Thanks very much.
  13. Hi all Just looking into this on the bassis of keeping unit costs as low as possible. Not really worked out details yet, but on the basis of every body pays for their strings and a fair share of the duty/postage. i.e. If you have 2 sets out of 5 then you get to pay 40% of the o/heads. I'd be happy to act as the delivery point and post out orders at cost and by whatever method individuals require. Please let me know if you're interested and how many sets you would want. Cheers Alain

  15. OK thanks. details sent.
  16.
Some would be of the opinion that heritage items don't only belong to the owner, but to the world. Like if your house is a a listed building or something.
Hmm. With no disrespect to the OP or Mr Dead Mouse, I'm not convinced that a '77 P bass would be considered a heritage item, as they are hardly low volume production items and have the stigma associated with the post CBS production values. Therefore go for it!
  17. I have a few items that have been sitting in my box of bits for various lengths of time: SOLD [s]Firstly a pair of the strap end mechanisms for the Dunlop Dual design system (the bits that fit to the strap). They are an antique brass colour not sure if that's exactly the right description, but that is what they look like! £8 posted.[/s] [s]Secondly I have a brand new unopened set of black Grover Quick Release Straplocks (acquired in error - not paying attention). £12 posted.[/s] Lastly I have a selection of several sets of strap buttons accumulated from various basses. A modest donation to BC will secure these.
  18. +1 to all that. My first MBB and definitely not my last. Mrs ead really enjoyed the band too and vows to return next year. Big thanks to Alan, Dave, the band, the sound man, the catering etc. Good to meet you all.
  19.
ahem http://basschat.co.u...-just-wondering
Oooohh, potential thread to contribute to. +1 re cellists, sighs nostalgically, those tours...
  20.
My Sally ..... http://s1294.beta.ph...html?sort=3&o=0
What is top wood, look great?
  21.
Nigel what have you got against Violas exactly??
Can we do viola jokes too, former orchestral player (violin) so have a stock - as well as violin jokes for balance obviously.
  22.
The Bass Doc on here. Not sure how he's fixed work-wise, though.
He's just made a custom one for me, top quality.
  23. Yes low B is awesome and at .136 you can use them for suspension bridges and towing cars too. I'm having thoughts about filing my nut and going BEAD on the Letts bass as it has a 35" scale.
  24.
Great choice! Here's lesson 1, from an organist and pedant twat: It's called "pedals". No hand pedals exist.
Good point, well made sir!
