1.
...But, it did seem to wake up a music scene that had perhaps become a little stale and complacent...
Same here really. I'm a massive prog rock fan so it woke me up from shuffling around gigs in flares and tie dyes. I do like some of it more from the point of view of its place in musical history and the fact that Punk needed to happen than any technical ability to marvel at.
2. No, not really as it was a very modest Squier Affinity P Bass. My second bass that replaced it was a Spector Legend 4 and that I do miss more and more - sold to a fellow BCer only a few months ago after several years of faultless service
3. The salutory learning point for me was my Rickenbacker. I had always loved the look and on top of that some of my favourites bassists played them. After 4 years of squirrelling away spare cash I eventually saved up enough to be able to afford a lovely Jetglo 4003, as apart from Mr Squire's white one there is no other colour - ducks behind the sofa... The neck was sweet and stable, the bass was in grest condition and I could live with the frankly weird bridge, but the real nightmare was that I couldn't find a comfortable position for my right hand. As a finger style player taking the pickup cover off would have worked, but in doing that you loose the whole look imo, so after much agonising I sold it (at a modest profit which helped a bit). When I was trying it out the first time (about 30 minutes or so of playing) I was not focussed on this in particular, more worried about drooling over it pre-purchase. Now I try to be more objective and try to use all my senses when afflicted by GAS. Colour wise my preference is for natural wood, but as only one of my basses is finished in this way I will now claim that I am cured of the "must have one" thing - I hope . I'm not a big fan of blue basses or guitars for some reason, completely irrational I know.
4. Have a bump on me for a stunning looking bass. Proud owner myself.
5. I bought an MIM P from a BCer recently. The neck on it is really nice, although the pocket is a little "over accommodating". (Jack - Salford based luthier - is sorting it out for me as I type). The bass is otherwise fine, it's a 2002 vintage, and in beautiful condition and for what it cost I personally feel that I have had very good value. Opinions are mixed, but there also seems to be a degree of variations in quality from USA instruments too. I suspect that most will say try a number of basses if you can find them (there's a couple on ebay at the moment and I think I remember seeing one on here). You're welcome to try mine if you fancy an outing - but it's not for sale! If you have a read of the £200 bass challange thread in General Discussion you may get some ideas. There's a cracking looking Yamaha BB200 (precision look alike) that was listed at £125 but the seller has not relisted since but you could always contact him if you have an account. Here's the link: Yamaha BB200 Sorry looks like I was a bit slow typing!
6. The River - Bruce Springsteen (not certain if the jury would accept this as a "slow" song) Echoes - Pink Floyd Questionning Eyes - Breathing Space Plus numerous classical pieces and slow movements within them!
7. I've tried a set of Roto's iirc but didn't really get it. Flats on everything now except the Contemp Jazz that has the lightweight rounds it came with and that I rather like.
8. Since settling on an MB500 plus Barefaced cabs I've not looked back. So maybe keep the amp and look at the Barefaced cabs.
9. Don't know what your budget is, but Westone have the UM range that is specifically designed as pro IEMs. The link here will give you some idea. Personally I use a pair of Westone 2 for normal iPod style listening (2 drivers in each side - awesome sound). The UMs are meant to be even better. 10.
No, completely different. The thumpinator is a low pass filter (I understand), whereas the RH amps perform compression or some other related trickery to make their amps sound a bit louder when they are pushed.
Is it not a high pass filter but with a very LF cut-off? Sorry must have been typing at the same time as JakeBrownBass
11.
At the risk of being flamed to death.... Many of these are the reason(s) that I'm either in an originals band... Or not in a band at all. I understand that these may be as a part of lucrative function/covers band arrangement.... But I'd just stand there and play it like a zombie. For some reason, I only enjoy playing something that I've had some input into, for better or worse. In the last band I was in, we did "All along the Watchtower..." and I hated it. Quite obviously my mileage varies significantly... And limits (severely) my ability to find a band...
As a band we have made the decision to play as much of our own stuff as we think we can get away with. This means sets will vary from 100% own brand to maybe 70% covers. At a recent gig where we were playing about 50/50 we got asked to play more of our original material which was great - so not all doom and tribute bands!
12. It's OK people, I'm better now!
NB I would think based on spec the Thumpinator would be an excellent match for the Barefaced cabs, which quite a few people are running.
I had a quick e-mail exchange with Alex in relation to the Barefaced issue and he's a big fan of this type of unit. Anyway "Buy Now" was clicked upon yesterday, not sure whether it was in time or not though.

14. If you need any assistance I can get to Manchester very easily - only 12 miles away. PM me if you require any collection service/short term storage. I work in Warrington a little bit closer for you and would be happy to meet up down the M6 a bit if that would help...
15. Whichever bass matches my outfit...................just kidding, normally it's the Overwater. Well black does go with everything
16. Hi people. I'm based in the NW (Chorley, Lancashire) and may well be going on the Sunday (subject to me needing to be in London Mon to Wed following the show). If this happens then I'll be please to offer lifts down - clearly you would have to get back on your own! Dont' mind excursions en route. Let's say c.15mins from the motorway (M6 and M40 or M1 depending upon need).
17. Yes I'm not sure I quite got the shelf reference unless it's a very obscure filter gag? When I started following and reading this thread I was firmly of the mind that the MT sounded like the next "must have" bass related gadget. However I'm increasingly more reluctant to click "Buy Now"; more so as 4 strings are quite enough for me personally. I can't quite put my finger on why this is although some of the manufacturers posts cause me to raise an eyebrow, in these uncertain economic times I wasn't really programmed for such a relaxed take it or leave it response. Anybody else harbouring similar doubts or am I just going to have to wait for the next batch to be produced? How about raising a posse of 4 string players to see what a "bulkier" order might do to the unit cost of a custom shop filter for us less talented/more easily confused musicians?
18. I think I'd pay to hear that live
19. Do we know what bass was being used in the video clip as that might resolve some of the questions about the effect on a 4-string bass.
20. Thanks goingdownslow, I didn't think to look there!
21. Sadly not KevB, but thanks for the offer. I generally find stuff on the net and just print it out...
22.
OOooo I've just remembered an old pet hate .. *chasing cars* ... Wow what a dull song for a bass player
Yup, probably the low point for a gig where covers are required - gets a good respnse though. Also not a fan of the Libertines.
23. Just bought P-retro from Simon. Very easy to deal with, plenty of e-mails etc, totally reliable, goods arrived as promised. Highly recommended as others have observed.
24. Not studied that bit yet, but thanks for the heads up. I've just tried to find the June 2011 edition online but failed. Am I missing a trick and is there a handy link?
25. Thanks very much, that looks like the beasty. I'm now wondering why I didn't find that link
