Rustier knobs and plate already fitted The bridge looks surprisingly shiny in the pic compared to what it is actually like.

It's a fair point @NancyJohnson makes. If it's a unique bass then this ACG would be mine I think. As close as you can get to a custom bitsa and costing significantly less than an American Std Jazz (or whatever they are called now) this is a cracking bass and gets used a lot at ead towers.

Now sold thanks for all the interest I acquired the bass a few months back from skb558 per the ad below. The fretless neck is now up in Moffat being added to a new body to make a whole new bass for which I will need some funds. As I'm now playing a lot of fretless bass (without too much readily identifiable talent) I am reluctantly moving this on to contribute to the fund raising effort for the ACG beastie being forged in Scotland. The bass remains in immaculate condition and has very recently acquired a brand new set of D'Addario nickel wound strings. It's a lovely example of Alan's work frankly and deserved to be played and cherished. Both the black pickguard and the balck perloid item are included as well as a good quality gig bag. I'd much prefer to meet up to hand over in person if at all possible. Trade wise I am interested in a mid range 4-string fretless bass with some cash my way that I can gig in places where I would be concerned to take the ACG. I've added a few photos of the bass below but if you'd like to see any more you only have to ask

Don't the American Specials have the slimmer neck? Although although also the grease bucket tone circuit that I understand is not universally loved, although I don't mind it.

I've owned a Nate Mendel P and a Geddy J. Both were sadly boat anchors and became difficult for me to gig so they had to go. I have since commissioned a Sandberg 'Geddy' bass but with pickups in the 60s position which is my preference. Token Sandberg pic

Is Jaco more of a bass player icon that might not have had the wider recognition? Those two 1970 Js would, I imagine, have been custom orders. There is certainly evidence of fretless Jazzes (& Ps of course) before 1980 so they have been quite niche and only really got going when Fender moved production back to the US after the success of the MIJ/CIJ basses. Still no clearer on the p/up placements though.

Thanks for that. The reason I went with 1970 is the attached photo from my "Illustrated History of Fender" which has this pic of two 1970 Js. This is the earliest I've found so far and unhelpfully both have pickup covers.

As far as I can see Fender started selling fretless Jazz basses in 1970 (so why all the 60s F/L re-issues from Japan). The pics I have found so far all seem to have p/up covers, but can anyone tell me if the pickups were in the 60s or 70s position? I imagine both with the early ones being in the the 'old' positions... Any help and guidance much appreciated.

Mine has a Lollar (single coil) pickup and it's great. Not a CV bass, more of a bitsa. -
I feel your pain. I regularly kid myself that acquiring a particular bass will instantly result in the talent knob being maxed out at 11. Reality normally sets in 48 hours later so give it a couple of sleeps if you can.
