I play it in drop D because for me that's the easiest way to play on a 4 string bass. I suspect it goes down well because a lot of folk enjoy hearing stuff they know and can sign along to. Frankly, if you you are a bit sniffy about this then you probably shouldn't be in a covers band. Write you own stuff. I also play in an originals band. Maybe that makes me more chilled about playing jukebox rock in the covers band. Who knows, but taste is a very personal thing and if everyone had to like the same music as dictated by the taste police then what a dull world we would live in..

Bassist for Kylie Minogue - BBC Radio 2 Hyde Park Concert
ead replied to Cuzzie's topic in General Discussion
Here, here! I enjoyed the show but then Kylie might be a bit marmite for serious musicians. I have a Sandberg bass or two that i rate highly, in fact I'd go as far as to Sandberg make the best Fenders . Also a BF cab and a talent deficit -
You may have to get one made for you. ACG have turned out a few s/s ERDs but not sure about the weight. My 34" scale ACG 4s weight around 3.6 to 3.8kgs so I can't see why a seriously lightweight 5er isn't a goer. Alan has some particularly lightweight bodies he has been making. I'd have to go and look at the site though as i can't remember. I also have a Sandberg VS at 3.4kgs.

Interestingly (or maybe not), I ended up taking two P to rehearsal last night. My '66 and an American Std made around 45 years later. In isolation I love and gig both of them but I was surprised that they sound quite different. They both have nickel rounds on and have the original fit p/ups and electronics. If forced to choose I'd still pick the '66 which I would describe as smoother and more rounded while the 2011 is definitely the punchier of the two. I imagine the age of the wood must play a small part in all of this.

I like some jazz, in the same way I like some metal, some pop, some rock etc. etc. The stuff I personally struggle with is the more atonal jazz with very 'unusual' note choices and rhythms. I guess I'm pretty much in the trad jazz camp.

Ignore everybody. Check the for sale section and see what is available near where you live. I'm sure a lot of BCers will not object to a reasonable request to try a bass or two to see what floats your boat. Then you can start the search with some knowledge of what works for you and de-risk the process a bit. If you're near me then feel free to drop in.

I got mine through Classic & Cool Guitars (agents for Sandberg). Mark is very competitive on price as I think he takes a smaller cut than most.

Have you considered a Sandberg. I got a custom VS (P bass) made for around £1,375 (including custom colour and painted h/stock. So you could get one for close to your budget. A quick play on the Sandberg Configurator produced a standard spec 5-string VS for €1,500.

Vester Clipper (thumb copy) preamp advice please!

John East gear is great. Something like his J Tone would be a good option at £150, but check with him about the suitablility of the knobs going through body rather than onto a bell plate. John is mega helpful as well as being a brilliant engineer. https://www.east-uk.com/index.php/bass/j-retro/j-tone101.html -

Thanks, not aware of this and interested to hear as I replaced the Delano pickup in my VS with a Nordstrand NP4 that I feel has really improved the sound.- 29 replies

Sandberg do the snappier Black Label pickups but I've not played a bass with them fitted as yet. I presume the ones you refer to are the same as fitted to the Nighthawk range.- 29 replies

Shouldn't a fretless Precision be called an Imprecision? Sorry, I'll get my coat...

Yes deffo within your budget. My commission has a few tweeks from the standard spec on top. But the cooking RetroB is £1,975 which frankly covers a great spec. Can't remember the exact date but the leadtime is shaping up to be around 10 months.
