I think the only time I've felt emotionally upset at the death of someone I didn't know personally was when John Peel died - and that was more about missing him from R4's Home Truths than for anything to do with music.

Cheers Geoff, I'll give that a go.
- if the string/scale length is too long, the note would be flat - not sharp.
Yes, the open string is a wee bit flat compared to the fretted notes - so if I tune the open string to E, the fretted notes become slightly sharp in comparison, whereas if I tune the fretted notes correctly, the open string is flat. Hope that makes sense! Regards, Earbrass

Ha, yeah it is a bit weird. The action was very high - about 5mm: I've lowered it to about 3.5, which has helped. It just seems that there's still more than a semi-tone difference between the open string and the note on the first fret, which I'm struggling to understand. Had a band practice last night, and I think the error is small enough to get away with in a band context, especially as I rarely play the E string above the 4th fret anyway. I'll think about taking it to a tech once this gig is over. Thanks for your thoughts. E

Hi, I tried to check/set the intonation on my bass last night, and was having big problems getting the E string right - however far back I moved the bridge saddle, the note at the 12th fret remained obstinately sharp. Eventually I realised that when the open E string was in tune, the notes on all the frets were sharp, and by about the same amount. No problem on the other strings. I checked these results with 2 electronic tuners, so its not "tuner error". I tried changing the E string for a new one, but the problem remained unchanged. I can have all the fretted notes in tune, or the open string in tune, but not both. The only explanation I can come up with is that the length of string between the first fret and the point in the nut from where the string starts to vibrate freely is too long: I can't see any damage to the nut, but perhaps the bed of the slot is not even, and the string is vibrating from a point within the slot rather than the "bridge-end" edge of the nut? Is that possible? Should I try gently filing the slot to make sure it's even? I'm a bit non-plussed as I have a gig tomorrow night, and don't want to do anything that could make things worse or cause another problem. I'm not the world's greatest with tools of any kind, and am a bit nervous about trying out a new (to me) procedure. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks! Earbrass
I cant believe he went on the program, more dignity lost....Just not cool.
I don't think Macca and cool have been on nodding terms for some decades. (Mull of Kintyre? Frog chorus? Band on the Run?)

Not had this problem when playing bass, but many years ago I played in a duo as pianist accompanying a singer - and felt very exposed; no matter how well I played, I was only the accompanist so prospects for glory were very limited, but I could easily be the villain by cocking up. Don't remember ever completely losing it but it was certainly touch and go on occassion. Playing bass in a band seems so SAFE by comparison - I don't get nervous the way I used to in the duo, where one comment I received was "so, where does all the blood go from your face when you're playing?"

don't think there'd be much meat either way...

I'd love one (or more) of these... ...but sadly I think our cats would think it was their pressy.

So, if a PA cab is likely to prove capable as a bass guitar cab, does the same hold true of powered PA cabs vs Bass power amps? How about passive bass >> preamp pedal (eg hartke bass attack, SABDDI, etc) >> powered PA monitor (eg 300W 1x15 + horn)? Anyone use this kind of setup instead of a conventional bass amp / cab rig?

Next you'll be telling us that there's no such person as Mark Bass.
Rightly or wrongly I have strong views about animals but wouldn't be overly worried about woods. C
But that makes no sense; one of the main causes of extinctions is habitat loss - cut the forests and you kill the animals. And one one shouldn't be too impressed by claims that tropical woods are "sustainably" sourced, since there is massive fraud in the timber trade, with illegally logged wood being given false documentation to make it look kosher.

What's the most over-rated bass, or bass related product???
Bassists. They're just failed guitarists with poor personal hygiene and charisma bypasses, after all.
I resent that - I'm a failed pianist. -
Distance to rehearsals..., how far do you go?.. ...all the way. Even on a first rehearsal. But I'm NOT a slapper.

OK, I lied about "last bump" - I meant it at the time, but have just tried listing the thing on ebay and was so p*ssed off with the restrictions and charges they now impose on buyers that I gave up (it's been a while since I've used it as a seller). Have posted an ad on gumtree instead, but might as well let it run here too.
Anyone else seen them? Nick
Yes, but a long time ago: May 1975 at QPR football ground (with Patrick Moraz on keys: Relayer was the latest album at the time). Fabulous gig. I have a suspicion I saw them again later in the 70's, but I can't recall any details, I'm afraid (possibly at the Empire Pool Wembley (now Wembly Arena)??).
I suppose I'll be bucking some trends here, but honestly in my opinion anything other than a Fender Jazz or P-Bass is a waste of time.
Given the quality of many cheaper basses (see the Budget Basses that do a Pro Job thread, or OutToPlayJazz's recent review of Squier CV vs Fender MIA), there's a strong case for saying that a (real) Fender Jazz or P-Bass is a waste of money! -

Sold Mike an effects pedal. Quick payment, good communications, no problems. Would definitely deal again. Thanks!
ITV are showing An Audience with Donny and Marie (Osmond) tonight at 8:00pm. Recorded recently in London it features no other than my good friend, and tutor to many, Paul Geary on bass duties.
Seems a bit unfair to point this out. We've all done things we're not proud of for the money.

I like the comments on YouTube: Q: what is that thing on that bass at 0:07 ? A: I would imagine its something to mute the sound of the bass so its not so in-your-face. If thats what it is thats probly why the bass sounds so mellow in this song. [actually it looks like a bean-bag frog or similar, lying over the bass neck, where the strings aren't!]

Of course, if you weren't going so fast, you'd have had time to brake and come to a safe, controlled halt before hitting the musical wall.
I had a play of one of these the other day. It was very nice indeed and played a damn sight better than the Classic Vibe Jazz I also tried. I asked if they'd set the Peavey up and was told that was they way it came out of the box. I think whoever gets this will be very happy,
Cheers Musky, that person is paganskins, and I sincerely hope he will be! -

SOLD Peavey Zodiac BXP sunburst with maple fingerboard in mint condition. This has a body inspired by early 50's Precisions, with a P/J pickup configuration, and a 21 fret Jazz bass profile neck. Build quality is superb. I bought it as a backup while I worked on my other 2 basses, and it would have become my fave bass were it not for the weight: at around 9 1/3 lbs (to "bathroom scale" levels of accuracy), it's a little heavier than I'm really comfortable with (but then again I'm a ten stone weakling - this may not be an issue for many). Yours for £120 + postage to UK or it may be possible to arrange personal delivery / handover depending on where you are. I am in SE London - you are welcome to come and try it out.
