1. Sounds like you've been unlucky. Granted I've played with one or two like that, but most of the time it's quite the opposite. The one example that comes to mind is a rehearsal where the number was a proper blitz, loads of changes and finished with this meltdown. We hit the last note and it was silent for about 10 seconds. Then the trombonist asked 'the quaver in bar 27, do you that staccato or broader?' I guess what I'm trying to say is that they do all the basic things right, with a complete absence of fuss.
2. Started to watch it, but much to my shame and against my better judgement my irrational pathological hatred of Beverley Knight's singing eroded my will power, alongside the flaccid rhythm section. After last years Quincy Jones prom with Cory Henry and the Metropole Orchestra, which was quite simply dynamite this was underwhelming to say the least.
3.
Thanks for the update. I wish I was strong enough to lug nine to gigs.
Nine might be overkill!
4.
You can't go wrong with a decent laptop bag, especially if you can get your hands on one of the old fashioned brief case style ones. I've got one and it is way more sturdy and has more protection and padding than any of the overpriced official amp bags that I've seen. It's probably not as sturdy as a hard case but for loading in and out of the car it's more than man enough for the job. I cart my wireless system about in a Stanley plastic drill case that is lined with foam and the has lasted for over 10 years without cracking or breaking. I seem to recall the DG amp is quite diddy so you might be able to squeeze it into something similar?
That's what I use. Was warned off it originally as oiks might think it was valuable. Now if one sees it they must think I have an ancient and useless computer in there, stuffed with leads and straps as it is.
5.
There is a great video by Keith Carlock about playing shuffle, and he has a pretty decent Purdie shuffle as well as a Porcaro shuffle... https://www.youtube....h?v=ex2YG_-3Ov0 Don't know how to embed this
Loved that! Can you imagine playing with that going on in the band?!
6. I've played through two ampeg B15s. One belonged to John Giblin, the other belonged to AIR Studios and used to reside in Montserrat. Both were broken.
7.
To be fair, most of the old time pros I've met would have an attitude closer to the drummer in question
It reminds me of a story about the legend that was Maurice Murphy, principle trumpet of the LSO for decades. The dep on that occasion was the conductor, one Leonard Bernstein. The maestro asked Maurice if the extract they were rehearsing was muted or unmuted. Maurice replied 'it's pencilled in as muted.' Bernstein went into diva mode and went, 'Well hot shot, what are going to play?' To which Maurice answered, 'You tell me, you wrote it.' Professional?
8. One guy I play with says 'Enjoy' before every song. He's supposed to be a rocknroll star not a waitress.
9. Do you have a flag? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UTduy7Qkvk8
10. Really good article thank you. If you haven't seen them before you can link to loads of similar articles by The Bass Whisperer himself here http://www.bassplayer.com/styles/1181/rb-gold-miami-soul-stew/57898
11. It's a funny one as most American G&Ls on here seem to be around the £800 mark. ASATs are a bit more niche and the few I've seen on here tend to be around a while. The tele body and rumours of neck dive (a complete non-issue with mine) are a put off for some, and the value slightly lower as a result. The brand doesn't shift the same as fender and musicman. I think it's the classic G&L conundrum of being slightly too late to the party to have been used consistently on truly iconic records, despite being in my view, and Leo's, the best instruments he made!
12. I was given some sage advice by a reed player with the RSC. Never get a dep who's better than you. Or blonde 😉
13.
pic's in OP
Very nice!
14. A friend of mine at Uni went to her first viola lesson on the course. As a person of short stature she had a 7/8 instrument, and the infamously officious teacher asked to have a look, loudly declaring it was unlikely to be sufficient for the challenging repertoire my friend was about to tackle on the syllabus. One glance through the f hole and the instrument was handed back. My friend was asked if it was genuine, to which the answer was yes. No mention of her choice of instrument was made again during her time doing her degree. My friend's dad was rather high up in the oil business and had bought her £32000 worth of Stradivarius. To be fair the thing was immense.
15.
The red one I remember drooling over that bass,I was frantically trying to sell my double bass at the time so I could buy it. Congrats to you on your lovely bass
Thank you. She's on holiday with me now, we're merrily playing through standing in the shadows of Motown again. Agree about the neck joint on G&Ls, that's one of the first things I noticed picking it up. And after hearing a will lee performance the other day I have GAS for a jb now.
16. https://m.thomann.de/gb/stairville_led_bar_240_8_bundle.htm We use these. Brilliant, hook together with an XLR without unstability, light in weight, easy to use programs. Can't wait to buy more!
17. Congratulations, can't wait to see the pics. Drew sold me my lb100 a few months back and I can't put it down still!
18. The loosing the s thing doesn't seem to work from my phone but I love this clip. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i2rByT541zk
19. Major hint to the wife this is my Christmas present this year!
20. I had seen the Geddy Lee one, there is a certain logic to his opinion! The Diamond one I hadn't, my cringe gland is working overtime. However did make me think again there should be some thread on here about the greatest bands we were in, that no one has ever heard of. I'm thinking there's a goldmine, nay, diamond mine out there.
21. I'm not enjoying this thread as it's got me totally hooked on Dave's YouTube channel. His accent makes me laugh for starters and I've no idea if he's any good at repairs or not but there's something really relaxing about it. I know, I need to get out more!
22. My old school American 410 is still going strong, despite living in one of the toughest musical environments known to man- the secondary school classroom. The amp is a 1400 series head, basically the unit from the old kickback combo. Just about clinging on. If the new stuff is anything like my kit it's both robust sound wise and in endurance.
23. Not too loud- punters need a song or two to get used to live music. There seems to be a psycho- acoustic thing, bands = too loud, all too often the case unfortunately. We subtly increase the background music going through the PA running up to us taking the stage. We also try and start our first song when the song playing finishes. Little things but they all help with the reputation.
24. Never come across this YouTube channel before- thank you. He's a damn sight more cheerful working a 3 bolt 80s G&L wunkay. The fanboi in me can't help pointing that out!
25. There's a school near me with a girl called A-ha, which leaves mostly people doing their best Partridge impersonation or if they are slightly more original singing Take On Me. It's pronounced A-dash-a.
