1. Looks like the Washburn has seen service relatively recently. Sounds fab in this clip. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qshldMtI_Uw
2.
At 1.02, and throughout the video, there's a bass player with a beard. Kat? Your letting yourself go!
Should have checked but forgot to mention they do instrument swopping! That guy also plays guitar and clarinet in the band. That was filmed at at yellow shark studios in Cheltenham, and the owner of that was playing drums when I supported them. I can testify Kat in the flesh is female. When an engineer friend of mine recorded them he was most smitten! Of course as a dedicated married musician I concentrated on her excellent note choice and rhythmic placement...
3. Just we've forgotten by this point, this Kat from other animals in action, just to see if she knows what she's on about. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-vhUslWzxkc
4.
You have to hoover out the inside of your amp? Really? I've never done that. I can see through the ventilation slots in my amp of a few years, TH500, and it's clean. All my gear lives in cases when they are not being gigged. Seems to be enough protection.
It was a surprise to me too! My stuff is all stored in cases but I think what's done it is doing a lot of orchestral pit work. All the crap gets shunted around with people dancing and we often get fogged out by smoke and dry ice. All those particles must have piled up over the years. Thank you for the safety warning too. That was one of my main concerns in the first place. I was super careful using the vacuum- only thing is now my wife wants me to that careful with the skirting boards!
5. Other animals are a mighty fine band, I supported them (and Betty Boo!) the other day. She's a great bass player, copes with two out there drummers and 7 other people onstage. They can drink too! There's plenty of ways to skin a cat, and arguing over what specific job the bass does is like arguing over the one way you should cook potatoes. Do what's right for the gig and make your other band mates smile.
6. That is truly disgusting! Great story though.
7. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Wpp7oxrBUq0 Bonkers, but a fantastic watch.
8. Great idea, I hoovered as well as I could, but didn't have anything to hand to tackle the board etc. Sounds better already though.
9. After literally years of procrastinating, i braved it out and took the lid of my little mark tube to clean the volume knob. To my horror I found the internals covered in dust. Not dust bunnies, dust hares. I had waved a hoover in the general direction of the fan and heatsinks once or twice and thought job done but this was ridiculous. Forgot to get pics unfortunately. Anyway, I can't be the only one to commit heinous acts of neglect or mistreatment to their amp- what do you lot need to 'fess up to?
10. A bit of theory helps definitely. I like to get my students to take a characteristic from two different songs or pieces and then form a hypothesis. What happens if they combine a element from one song with an element of the other? It might be the descending bassline of Feeling Good with the chord sequence from Despacito, it really doesn't matter. They just have to make it work. It's surprising how many constructive tangents can happen as a result, even if they don't meet the hypothesis.
11. Supported a band on all on ears the other day. The event was a outdoor multi band job, family day out type of thing. Technically perfect, no backline, line 6 helixes all round and more electronic toys than humanly feasible, in fact, they failed to draw a crowd as I believe no one realised a band was actually on stage. Sometimes you need a fire breathing rock n roll band.
12. Did a party last week and was told by the organiser to use the headline band's Vase amps. Hand built and shipped over from Brisbane especially for them, decked out in white. 1000w head with valve pre I think, and 210 cab.Only 5 minutes before I was about to soundcheck the organiser/ drummer knocked it over, where at least it did a pretty set of flips and pirouettes. Needless to say when I plugged in it sounded dreadful and out came my tweedy beloveds. No issues at all then. I'm hoping someone knocks over tomorrow's rig for me as well, pretty sure it'll be the usual knackered and abused hire fare from the looks of it.
13. Plus one on the basslines. Always just the right balance of intricate, simple, obvious and inventive. The bassline on Spectre (which I adore) is incredible.
14. I've had to tone down the stage moves. When I was first gigging it was a three piece and it fell to me to be the visual interest as whilst the other guys where great on stage the material meant they didn't have time to go roaming off ala Jimi. Video's been great to help the process but I've noticed I go from one bad habit to the next. Out of nowhere I've started mouthing the basslines as I play, like a demented cross between Glenn Gould and a goldfish.
15. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soul-Fingers-Legendary-Bassist-Donald/dp/1495052923 Saw this on this on FB, the SBL thread. Will be purchasing!
16. We do a tango version of Gnarls Barkley's crazy, and poker face with a Purdie shuffle. We do some mash ups, one's called Jack My Happy Love Whole which is hit the road jack, happy and whole lotta love interwoven. Our salsa version of shake it off bombed however.
17. You just need to develop 2 modes of reading. I am a bassist and trumpeter and have to scrub up regularly as one skill will be busier than the other for times. Nothing to worry about, you get used to it. Ask me to play bass reading treble clef though and I'm screwed!
18. Compound duple, now, difficult question, what kind of G&L is that? Nice to see one in a video.
19. The ned's atomic dustbin of weddings! Mucho happiness to you both!
20. Knebworth 90. 13th birthday present and I went with my dad. Tears for fears Status quo Cliff and the shads Phil Collins/ Genesis Eric Clapton Elton john Dire straits Paul McCartney Pink Floyd Plus my introduction to Led Zep- Robert Plant later joined by Jimmy Page. Blew my tiny mind- it was awesome.
21. Option 1. Going out of the DI on your amp is perfectly acceptable but if the sound guy has lots of bands to do that whole 'can I unplug some of your kit, leave it somewhere in the dark, and also, is your XLR long enough to get to here' conversation is not how to make friends and influence people!
22.
Www.trickfishamps.com They're not available in the UK yet but you can order them through Paul Sips at Paul Bass Matters in Nijmegan, who will be able to give you good advice and comparisons to other similar price range amps.
Thank you
23. Where do you find these online please? I've only just heard of these and they sound very interesting.
24.
Jamerson was so good he had the whole Motown organisation by the balls.
Definitely!
