Non watch, music stand. clip on truner related comment. Waffle. That bit between songs when someone has to do something to avoid the awkward silence. As an audience member I can happily do without a few of things. Band in-jokes - Keep them for rehearsals. Personal non gig related stuff - I don't need to know about your life. Originals bands - I don't want an in depth analysis of what the next song is about. In fact any big gap between songs that stops the flow of the gig. I used to be guilty of this too until we played with a band who went on before us who went on endlessly 'This songs about the time I was at low point in my life. My cat knocked over my beer. My aunty had a hip replacement...Hey Gary on drums could do with one of them....etc." I saw myself but much worse. I limited myself to very brief, relevant intros. The drummer moaned about not getting enough time to wipe his sticks but it was a much punchier gig. Obviously as with all gig things context is king and working an audience is an asset. But if I'm watching a band I don't want to know if the clutch on your Astra needs replacing.
You need to talk to one of my clients, guilty of all of the above and it's killed his promising career. Still does it.

Kurt Cobain Would Have Been 50 Years Old This Week

Had tickets to see them, Aston Villa leisure centre. Still gutted I never got to see the band of my generation. -
gig tip. Have a medical kit in your car. i.e. bandaids, aspirin, anti-diarea pills.
Our guitarist and drummer play in another band as well. They're playing a remote village hall in deepest darkest Herefordshire on a Saturday night and the drummer tucks into the buffet at the interval. 2 songs into the second half and he's gone green, and jumps off his stool and runs through the middle of the dancefloor to try and get to the toilet, fails spectacularly and pebble dashes the majority of the hall. Turns out he has a shellfish allergy he'd managed to accidentally avoid for 40+ years, and the prawn sandwiches were his downfall. The upside to this is the guitarist is a GP and had his spare doctors bag in the car and was able to save the drummer from being very poorly indeed. So now we travel with the doctors bag and expert paramedic to every gig!
Not massively challenging, but full on. I've not done legally blonde so can't compare, but definitely easier than hairspray. There's 36 pieces in it and is just constant. Sounds great with a good horn section though, a good portion n of it is standard function tunes. (endless amounts of I will survive!)
Thank you, I've missed Hairspray somehow so no true comparison yet! Pleased some interesting shows for bass players are becoming popular, these things can be more I V I V than a hank Williams tribute.

Oo, Priscilla, I've got that show in October, is it any good? Just had the roasting of legally blonde and want every show to be as much of a challenge! Slightly detached means there needs to be a fraction of silence inveteeen the notes. A slight lift of the fretting hand usually creates the desired effect.

What bass do you regret selling? Was it love?
I've been watching this thread and have decided it's time to contribute. in 1989 I owned a Warwick thumb, kubicki factor and a Wal Fretless. These were at the time my three ultimate basses. I was 18 and playing through a lovely Trace Elliott rig. I was playing loads and loving life. Long story short. I'd bought my first house with blood sweat and tears recession hit in the early 90's. Anyway mortgage payments to be made work drying up. The Wal went first. I took it into Musical Exchanges in Birmingham. For those who knew the place it was Gaz. He looked at me and said " are you sure" I had no choice. I covered my mortgage payment for that month. The factor and Warwick followed. I wouldn't change a thing but I'd love to own them all again. It is what it is !
To bassists, that story would be worthy of a special edition of Oprah. -
Was not was, walk the dinosaur
Yes! Just had to listen to it immediately, instant school disco flashback. Those horns, super tight. Couldn't figure out how the bass has been processed, any ideas?

Traded in a MIM P from the 80s with a bill Lawrence pickup for a 50w JCM800, which promptly spent the rest of its career breaking down. Top of my gas list since joining here- a nice solid P. -
(and not that sort of pencil) or several sharp pencils
Short of a pencil before a band call I bought a pack of ten pencils (the only things available from the tracks by the venue at short notice) Turned out to be one the best things ever, the rest of the band always go to you as the pencil guy!
As Elton John's bass player, Davie Paton, how he managed it. https://www.facebook.com/david.paton.58
Thank you, it's worth a shot!

I've been booked for a session playing with a 70s esque piano player. No problems working with keyboardists but the material is tricky, and the client wants more than the double the left hand strategy or play long notes out of the way. This is not a discipline I have a huge amount of knowledge in so I was hoping for some inspirational examples of how it's done well, a la Madman Across the Water by Elton John, which I managed to drag up from the memory banks after seeing it on here. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks in advance- Harry

Tying nicely with another thread, Aretha Franklin 'The Weight' with Duane Allman (and David Hood stepping out on the bass) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wta5GU3FNhA (Certainly beats Jealous Guy by Roxy.....)

Singing the national anthem out loud worked for awhile, which was recommended by a friend. Nobody has experienced an ear worm properly though until they've done at least one week of a show. Just completed round one of legally blonde, bursting into 'Gay or European' at work is highly unavisable.

I remember seeing this at the time by complete chance, fair play she had some guns. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GmXkEhs00lo

We played a wedding last year where Chesney Hawkes was a guest. 'I am the one and only' drove me nuts at the time but having to learn it and write it out for the rest of the band meant I found a lot of respect for it- it's got more key changes than Yale RnD. He was super slick and professional as well, very polite and sang great.

Finger strength is probably the cause, but it's worth remembering that what that's worth once achieved. Cramping up happens because tension has crept in, probably from much further up than you think. Shoulders and neck should be relaxed, you should be breathing properly. Counting the part in halftime helps, as well as focussing on being smooth, rather than 'fast'. Tension not weakness is the issue. Hippy gibberish I know, but if each one of those ideas buys you 30 seconds of extra stamina it all adds up.

I'm thinking of getting one of these, as like the OP I have a high output bass, and use octave and filter effects a lot. Can't fathom the specs though for a Little Mark Tube 500 and whether or not it actually has a HPF already. Any ideas, basschat hive intelligence?!
Great aren't they? How they can put in such an intimate performance in that setting! And as for the way the two drummers work together...
That was fantastic, thank you. Oteil on the P(hat) Bass too!

Fair play.
