I'll add it takes real skill to play something that simple with feeling and keep it musical whilst' locked in the pocket'.

Time to start the onslaught of Adam Clayton panning (again) then... I wish to say that I find the bass work just right for the songs. I have always liked simple over flash but irrelevant.... Edit: very surprised by the positive comments above - I'm not the only one then...
If we can do mixes and find something that everybody wants to learn from in some of them each time, then as long as the people involved share their thoughts and ideas and how they went about achieving things, then there is a huge worth in what we are doing. Its not about who is the best at mixing its about provoking thought and questions and getting answers, and help for anyone who wants it. Well that was the intention from me anyway. The voting thing is just a bit of fun anyway, its the learning bit that matters!
Exactly! Of all the trawling through 'lessons' and forums that I've done to try and improve my audio production standard - this collective mix will probably help the most. All of the mixes here interest me in one way or another - I look forward to the discussion of methodology...
I absolutetly understand the learning resource part of the competition , thats why I have included myself in the process , I know my skills and kit is very limited , but, the whole idea is a great insight into the world of production. I have seen documentaries, read a few articles and hear reference to mixing quite regularly , but its not until you get your hands dirty that the pieces start to fit . Lots of people know this stuff and can hone their skills , me , I am in at the first rung and it is a fantastic idea. when I first saw the competition announced , I could barely start up a DAW , and had no idea what the competition was all about. ( if your hear my entry, you might argue I still don't) but at least I've got to the first rung . Some of the replies take a fair bit of thought and time to respond and post, so I for one appreciatte the effort that a lot have put into the project.
Great post! For me also, it's not about competition - but the chance to learn and hopefully help with some ideas at the same time. I think it's great that you pitched in as a novice - best way to learn most things IMHO... and yes, massive thanks to everyone putting effort into this
nothing to do with me other than the moaning
Nah - I wouldn't cal that moaning.... You just pointed to the total ##@# up I made of upping the mix - wouldn't have known until someone said.
Furthermore you've removed the original and now peopl ecant hear what you had there in order to vote on it
I reckon I've sorted it now, finally - my sincere apologies for any confusion caused.

Sorry! I was trying to separate my Wife's SC account from mine and ended up moving the link. Re-upping now... The mix was ruined by a panner resetting itself before render - leaving the mix somewhat trippy to listen to.... Trippy mistake mix mix as intended( too late for comp) again apologies for confusion
-
thought I'd better post a revised mix (without the misbehaving panner) - just to show what I intended to enter... A deadline is a deadline (and there are some far better mixes submitted anyways) - but I didn't want people to think that 'swirly' mix was representative of my stuff. fixed link

I've had this since the early 90's,and it was well used when I got my hands on it (I'm guessing made in the '80's) and really love the feel and playability - but I found myself wishing for a neck pickup Gibson type sound... So, after acquiring a Les Paul to fill my needs - this needs to find a new home.. Condition is what could be described as 'road-worn' - it came to me already dinged and with a worn out bridge. There was some repaired damage to the first fret - but this hardly notices and doesn't affect playability at all. Otherwise, the jumbo frets show very little wear... I cleaned it and fitted an adjustable bridge to get the intonation sorted. I've recently fitted new Gibson 10's. Very loud unplugged and stays tuned for months on end - probably helped by the invisible neck join (looks like a thru neck but may be set). It has fantastic upper fret access, coil tappable 'bucker, adjustable brass nut... more info here These sell for £450 new - I'll take £250 due to the natural relic condition. Damn cheap for a British classic!

you'll get a cheap shockmount for just over a tenner from the 'bay - which will attach to most generic mic stands. Pop shields can be made easily by stretching tights or stockings over anything vaquely circular - I've used old coat hangers, sections of drainpipe, even one of those pet frisbee rings. As for those expensive reflexion filter screen's - just as well using a quilt propped/hung behind the mic....

It does look like a great buy - looks like a step up in quality from my old Antoria with proper pickups ,tuners and truss rod location.

Ok ,I have voted after careful consideration.. I'll have time to do a bit of a write up tomorrow.

My son has one of these - fantastic pre in this, great sound and no discernable latency. Miles ahead of the Avid stuff imho.....
-
@ charic, I was experimenting on this with transient driven panners to add a' bit' of movement - seems like they didn't save my settings and reverted to full width pan before rendering. Yet another reminder to check things before calling finished! Nevermind though, I have really enjoyed playing around with this and hearing others takes on it. Thanks to all

No pics as I can see... sorry, am I missing something?

Yup, I'm happy to go with the flow...

Removed an old link and put my current one here to save you time...

A video with a Les Paul and Esquire(single pickup tele) jamming together - a fairly good comparison between the two tonally. *warning* Phil X and Chappers from Aldertons content.....
-
As Lozz said above - If you have a Strat already, then a Les Paul type would give you more variety of sound over a tele (in comparison). I can highly recommend the Rally Les Paul - made by the same factory that turns out Epiphones. Get one before Gibson waves the lawsuit.... Comes with a set neck, pckups that are way better than i expected, real flame maple cap , great fretwork (only needed polishing) and was set up ready to go.. It's that good that I'm selling my Gordon-Smith and using the Rally instead... the best bit?.... I paid £139 new for it! And yes, they do them as right handers! Off to blast out Parisienne walkways through a valve amp now...

worth a look for someone local
