1. Can we have the stems as WAV, please
2. I'd like the headamp please. Could you PM me to sort it ?
3. Class. That's a glorious Jazz tone... and surprised at that cheapy gold SX strat sounding so good, and being used for this gig!
4. Well played,Ray! I was still p***ing myself laughing fom the 'Jim'll paint it' thread - made my sunday
5. Thanks to 51m0n and Skol for their reviews, I'll fill in the gaps for 51m0n's below: OLDG Slightly over compressed snare, kick is good and punchy, not big enough? Certainly pokes through, and competes with the bass though. Bit more EQ and that would be bang on! Excellent! must mean I'm getting close.. Nice bass sound there, gets a little lost against the guitars unfortunately Bass level too low again - a bad habit of mine, noted Harsh funk guitar I love that spiky tele/twin type sound - what can I say... Trashy hats, they sound a bit 'pumpy', is there a compressor threshold/release or gate threshold/release thats opening and closing around them on something like the OH a bit? Some phase oddness perhaps... Thats the gate settings on the kick/snare - I didnt want to lose too much of the hit, again inexperience. Very present guitars, nice, but maybe just bordering on the fizz I dont dig so much. I think you get away with it in the main. I thought so... Slightly middy vocal? Now you mention it - yup needed EQ Dry - where is the sense of a space? Hmm, 2 aux reverbs, a master verb and a delay on this already. I kinda liked the space I put it in ( I wasn't feeling 'big') Gating itps ( or any in general) very welcome.
6.
Getting the kick right is something I seem to be struggling with at the moment. Maybe you could give me some tips?
I used 51m0n's advice in post 29..
'Power' is gained from good transient control (and the control of the 30 to 80ms after the transient), great seperation and a deep understanding of what is providing energy in the low mids and when IME. It can be exaggerated greatly with parallel compression techniques (particularly on drums) and ducking techniques (kick and bass guitar, snare and guitars in a dense mix as well). In some genres you can increase the sense of power by getting some pumping going off the kick drum on a group (say of the rhythm guitars).
I ended up EQing the kick to suit and then sent it to parallel comp - then 'ducked' (sidechain compression) the bass under the kick just a little to help it's clarity. It really helped to up the power and presence of the kick.
7. Audio interface is an essential purchase imho - I didn't realize just how bad the onboard sound was in comparison. All Decent DAW's should sound identical - It's more about which one works best for you. I find Cubase to be to convoluted, for instance
8.
I am just going to change DAWs from Ableton to Pro tools 10, so this will be a really good move or a really bad one, time will tell. Any thoughts on the move anyone?
I'd seriously urge you to download Reaper before hurting your wallet with PT. It's a 6.5 meg download that is the full program which won't expire - what's to lose? It's so good that I paid for it !
9. Here's my take on this, I've tried for an analogue type feel and laid off hitting too hard with comps, etc... lots of Satson CM use here http://soundcloud.com/mickhastings/mission-ray-final
10. Hold it in place yourself and get your wife or a mate to do the marking. If you must use a clamp do it very gently, maybe try something like this...
11. wow... rec specs are scary for one plug! HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS: SSE2 for optimizations 2 & 5 A Minimum Dual Core Processor with 2 Gig Ram is recommended. Quad Core and 4 Gig Ram and greater are highly recommended. Nebula will work on a PC with 1 Gig Ram and a single 2.4 GHz processor, but will be limited in number of instances and processing speed. CUDA-compliant video card for optimization 12,13,14 and 15 (optional).
12.
your'e right about that drummer.. Yuk
I can't understand why... sounded fine to me...
13. Active posts include off topic posts - and the count you see below your avatar doesn't. Is that what you meant?
14. seems to be fixed now.. That's a fine piece of work for your first effort! much cleaner and defined than your other mixes- great to hear that you laid off the 'verb!
15. I'd be tempted to add P bass pickup too add to the hybrid theme - working on a jazz type control setup...
16. Thanks 51m0n, I have the vox, bass and guitars pretty well sorted (I think...) . I'll use your suggestions to try and get the drums up to par. If I'm somewhere near successful, I could post a before and after of just the drum buss to highlight the difference. TBH, I'm having trouble with the room ambience on these track... It's the first time I've worked on live drums as opposed to EZdrummer....
17.
Stuff of my youth, Caravan,
My wife suggested we listen to 'in the land of grey and pink' when we were checking out youtube the other day. I liked it in a curious way - but it is definitely' of it's time'....
18. If I hadn't already got one (over 5 years old and still working hard).... I'd be all over this at £65 - this is a great buy!
19. No worries to me - I like the energy of your track. I'm struggling to get that sort of power into my attempt, without turning it into a mushy, garbled mess - How are you doing it?
I'm getting sounds now (hurrah!!!!) but theres a slight delay (boo). Is this easy sorted ?
In that same window check that you are using the ASIO driver, then go to the ASIO config box and try to get the sample rate as low as you can without introducing glitches. Try to get below 10ms if you can... I'm not sure if the Beri can do this - but good luck
Cheers for the help.
No problem , it was me asking the same sort of questions 10 years ago - just paying my dues...
21. I'd seen it before - but not with the tab... I'll end up wasting a few hours playing along ( until the lightning drop D bits)
22.
Hi. Thought I'd give this a go and have really enjoyed it, so thanks to those organising it! Gave me chance to try some new ideas I'd heard about a try. Only listened to the original after finishing my mix though, and now feel slightly inadequate! Nevertheless, 'ere it is: https://soundcloud.c...mission-ray-mix Andy
Powerful sounding mix there.. Are you slamming it with a limiter,by any chance?
