I used titebond to glue a neck back on to an old archtop last year, and it's held up really very nicely apparently. Oh, I had to glue the headstock back on as well after that came off too, really good stuff. Sorts out a lofted archtop nicely.

Been listening to a lot of genesis at the moment
Dave Vader replied to marcus bell's topic in General Discussion
My first intro to genesis was Invisible Touch on top of the pops. it was not a good intro. Next thing I remember is Phil Collins doing "you can wear my hat" on the same show. Never got past the Collins connection sadly. Growing up in the 80s makes you not like previously great bands who were doing cack songs at the time (please also see owner of a lonely heart, for why I don't really listen to Yes, and that awful song about the Radio for why I don't listen to Rush) I do like what I've heard of the early stuff, but not passionate about it, sorry, will try harder, as I feel i should like them more. -
I think it is. A Cube, not a "Bass Cube".
thanks, and now I want it even more.....

oh I used to love these, but can't be bothered to search them on ebay anymore cos of all the new ones clogging up the search results. I would like this, but too far away for me. Good luck.

TOTP 2....70's bands....pick players dominant
Dave Vader replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
Once read somewhere that some session bassist use fingers when recording and picks when playing live, don't know if it's true but it does kinda make sense
I recall a quote from John Entwistle saying the opposite was true of him, cos he thought picks sounded better, but fingers looked cooler. I may have imagined it though. -
Your first Recording equipment and the journey.
I had one of these But the tape cover was broken off & certain buttons caused a huge "nerrrrrrrrrgggg" noise if you pressed them in the wrong way. To use it properly you needed the touch of a safe cracking bomb disposal expert who could play the flute. happy days
I still have an older version of that, mine's an x-2 I think, will get a photo later. I thought I'd made it when i started using that thing, after all the weird tape bouncing we did before that. Even more so when i used the tape outs from the back into my Studiomaster 16-2 Diamond (also still got it) using outboard effects on sends and returns. I have pictures of all my crap somewhere, and it only started sounding alright this year, when I got a focusrite saffire pro24 DSP, and started using reaper instead of cubase. -
respectfully, that is not true, you can get a set of Seymour duncans for about 150 quid for the pair, and a rockinbetter will fetch a good 300 or more if you can find anywhere to sell it these days. Real Rickenbackers are well over a grand. And not much better than some (note I said some, not all) fakers.
-
I took the electrics out of a hondo (like Hookys) and stuck them in my Rockinbetter. Luckily i had one lying around (cost me 25 quid back in the 90s, and was horrible) I now have one decent faker, rather than 2 sh*te ones. This was after having the seymour duncan drop in replacements for a bit, and a kent armstrong soapbar for a bit. All of it needed routing, but your looks like the newer rockinbetter with more ric-a-like pickups to start with.
Do bear in mind that many luthiers use templates, for necks and even for their non-standard body shapes. Takes out a lot of the guesswork, especially with fretting fingerboards, positioning bridges etc. I reckon I could probably make a body or wings, but a neck/fretboard? No way José! Again, I bet the pros have a template for guiding a router when cutting a channel for a truss rod...
So do most of the sensible amateurs, go have a look at tdpri and their telecaster challenges, most of those guys are just hobbyists. But they do amazing work....
Ok i see so i will basically need to measure what it currently is 34" scale or what ever it turns out to be and just make sure it matches that, sounds easy enough but i bet there are some difficulties. when you say 'neck pocket' do you mean part of the body that the neck sits in where its bolted to the body?
Yes, the neck pocket is the bit that the neck sits in. Measuring is a case of measuring from the nut to the 12th fret. And then ensuring your saddles are sat on the line you draw at the exact same distance from the 12th fret, with the neck securely in the pocket where it will be. You will still need to adjust the saddles for perfect intonation after that. i like to leave them in the middle of the bridge for this very reason. Sounds easy (first 3 times I did it i had to move the bridge back a bit the next day) it's a learning curve, don't start doing this stuff with an instrument you have any emotional invesment in.
I figured tampering with an old bass might be a good idea first - I have an old Ibanez SR 305 that I never use and was looking to sell but maybe could try turn it into some sort of new project. It does have a nice thin neck that plays well for so maybe a new body and some pickups / bridge etc to bring it to life a bit more sounds like a good idea. Is it that simple though? I thought the bridge position on the body is very important and had to match the scale length of the neck? so if i get a new body the bridge position will not be the same as on the previous body will this affect intonation?
This is where the fun starts, you get to move the bridge to fit the scale length. Or if you are lucky it will be close enough to just have to move the saddles. Or you can rout out the neck pocket to match the old scale length, whatever you like. No rules
I've got that exact same R2D2!!
yeah, I suspect the shower gel inside it is not as useful as it was 14 years ago though...

Just moved, here's outside of my new shed studio, complete with tinfoil windows to stop the aliens/CIA listening in. And here it is inside, I have not quite sorted it out yet, there is a lot of stuff, I know what some of it is, other bits haven't seen daylight in a very long time, and are scaring me....
Not got a problem with Zoostorm (Except my dads netbook dying) just i want something faster and more robust, and with multiple monitors. Liam
Oh yeah, we bought one of them mini ones as well, no PCI card inputs, annoying. Not very customisable really. Shame. Cheap though
-
Sod original, I went through loads of 70s strat fakers 20 years ago, and they got pulled apart and rebuilt as I wanted them to be. Still got all of them, except they are now just 1 guitar made from all the best bits, and a 4 string mandolin tuned one made from the best of the leftovers. Not bothered about the value (luckily). BTW, back then they went for £25 routinely, we burnt a lot of them at gigs. No regrets (wish i could still find them at that price though, nice score Paul)
£150 Zoostorm pile of cr*p running Win7 and Reaper. Liam
We bought a zoostorm at work on a whim to run a couple of massive printers and RIP software, we figured if it died, then it died, it's been really good. Not a single problem in the year and a half we've been using it, and cheap as all cheapness too. Don't diss the zoostorm.

no time, I am out for another month, sorry chaps.

I also like the new one, rust is great. (and never sleeps)

... and if you thought Mooer pedals were cheap ...
Dave Vader replied to BigBeatNut's topic in Effects
Problem is I play 6 string bass; it won't pick up the low B or high C. Sad panda. By the way if anyone wants a PT-21 tuner let me know as I have no use for mine.
Bum, that sucketh. -
... and if you thought Mooer pedals were cheap ...
Dave Vader replied to BigBeatNut's topic in Effects
Heads up for anyone considering the PT-21 tuner: it's only meant to recognise guitar pitches EADGBE or 1 semi-tone below. Perfect if you play piccolo bass, but sadly no good for anything lower. Having said that, it's picking up the G,D and E strings on my electric mandolin, but not the A; this must mean it also picks up one octave above guitar pitch as well. It also works on the 12th (and 24th) fret of a 4 string bass... hooray. Build quality is excellent though, and tunes fine; maybe the best value guitar pedal tuner out there if you only play standard, and tiny. The packaging and instructions are identical to Mooer, as is the pedal layout. Tracks as well as my Korg Pitchblack, and the display's as good. All moot thouigh given this isn't guitarchat (unless there's some way to modify the tuning internally... more skilled hands than mine required I'm afraid.)
Harmonics are your friends. -
I'll get a shot of the new set up later, you will all cry (for different reasons)
Two sheds and a summer house? on the Vader Estate? My flat is about as big as a shed... Rob
Out here in the countryside we all have estates, but I sold the Volvo when my gran gave me a hyundai /coatgotten
Where is the dividing line between a 'summer house' and a shed? Is it just a size of windows thing...
I have two sheds and a summer house at my new gaff, mostly so it's so I know which one I'm talking about. It is just a shed with a lot of windows. Good for the drinking, and making smutty euphemisms about banjos.
You will definitely be composing to video. I'll check if the daws have in built video support later the week And yes voting on the 25th which is when I will unveil the video too. This will allow 7 days for technical issues
Definitely out then, my PC can barely cope with playing video without trying to record music at the same time. Also my studio is in pieces in it's new shed home. It will take me most of the month to put it back together. Pick either excuse, whichever works for you, also it's too hot to hide indoors writing music, I'm playing banjo in the summer house instead.
