Is a defretted bass , as good as a fretless ?
Dave Vader replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
What are people filling the fret slots with when de-fretting? I smell a summer project coming on...
I used a load of maple veneer and superglue. Worked lovely. -
Using old tunes isn't allowed mate hardly a composition competition if you don't have to compose!
I may not cheat, (might lie instead )
-
I may cheat, I think i have an old tune which might work (and new Studio Shed is a long way from finished, but my stuff fits in, so this is good.)
Ich liebe dich. And... your cheque is in the post. Usual amount OK?
I'm going to be cheeky and ask for a raise, the price of rizlas has gone up again.

Managed to vote before the end of the comp for once (am sitting in the remains of my studio, chucking cables in boxes, and wishing I could be recording my own entry again this month, still....) Had to go for Mark's for it was ace. Also, why are so many people being nice to Charic?

Les Paul with optional Telecaster sound?
Dave Vader replied to itsmedunc's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
also probably not a gibson, going by the lack of knobs (except for the one who did this to it) -
I regularly leave my bass in my car for entire festival weekends (except the bit we are playing) amazingly some of them have been in baking heat. It is fine, never had any problems from it at all.

I once took the afternoon off work specifically to finish programming the drums for a BC composition challenge in time. I am not proud of it.
I mainly check BC in work these days. By the time I get home and sort the kids out I've forgotten that there was something I needed to check out... :-(
This, very much so, and when I get a minute to sit down and listen to some music, some band has invariably sent me a setlist that I have a day and bit to learn or something equally ridiculous. Will attempt to listen over the weekend.... while packing my house up to move, must not pack speakers.....
My actual post though isn't so much about that, but how folk write as a group rather than have a dedicated writing team (or individual). If any bands actually write that way & do we use the rehearsal time to structure the song & work on just the one song for 2 hours?
We should only work on just the one song, sometimes for weeks at a time, but our fiddle player keeps wanting to go through stuff we've been doing for ages that should be fine now, while our main songwriter/vocalist/guitarist keeps wanting to leap ahead, and also they both fret over the tiniest little details for too long, too early in the process. I am old, so i keep my gob shut and let them get on with it They'll learn.

you cant beat fender, They got it right.....
Dave Vader replied to greyparrot's topic in Bass Guitars
And you are right of course. (I own no fenders, but have a few fakes) The vicious circle of fenders will continue unabated -

oh, and also why is there a fender (or fenderish clone) in your avatar? -
Yeah thats fair enough, they can't have got where they are without some sort of top level endorsement I guess. Also, I love the look of the Jazz Deluxes. I'm not exactly clued up on bass history though and if you were to list people out I probably wouldn't know any of them everyone keeps mentioning people I've never heard of. I only know about Jaco from this forum and I have absolutely no idea who this Geddy Lee chap people keep mentioning is... I appreciate these people must have been forebearers for them to have become so well known. To be honest though I've no interest in stuff other people wrote in the past, Its all about creating something new for me Anyway this is probably for another thread. I'll shut up and go back to work... Rob
Just as an aside to your point of view about covers and fenders Rob, have a watch of Glastonbury over the weekend, and play the bass spotting game. You'll probably come out with about 90% fenders, and no covers bands. Not all of them will be old duffers either, and none of them will be dead. -
yes it will

Function band I dep with a lot do this a lot, and usually strangely, best one so far is Bootylicious (destinys child), into Suck My Kiss (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) then Suck my Kiss with The vocal from Survivor (destinys child again) which turns into the proper version of Survivor, and mutates into Suck My Kiss, and a bit of Give it Away before resolving back into Bootylicious by the end. There may be more bits that I have forgotten, Oh, also Moondance sung over Billy-Jean (one for Bilbo there)

In the back of my Hyundai Accent I can get 2 15" cabs on the back seat, with two basses thrust twixt back seats and front (always do this after adjusting your front seat if your midget wife has borrowed it, otherwise you have to take it all out again to shove the seat back). And a Head, plus big bag of cables and pedalboard and mic stand in the boot, with room to spare. If I put the seats down, I have managed all this plus a PA rig with 2 "12 cabs, stands, poweramp and mixing desk plus the big cable box. I think I had to stick one of the basses in the passenger seat though. It's a saloon.

Rainy problems in Crediton Town Square. Power went down after 2 songs, rest of band have acoustic instruments so moved further into the crowd and played quieter versions of songs. I stood and had a little dance with my EUB and continued having a drink. Some power came back, so we had FOH again, did a song with no monitor, or power to my amp or pedal board, so largely guesswork as to whether my intonation was any good (apparently it was fine, so that was nice) full power returned for the last 16 bars of the final number, so I could hear that. Which was very nice. Stressful.... yep

I once tried a 3rd, making the whole thing sound like a 1st inversion, it made my head hurt and I had to sit down for a while. I think it was Jazz....
AH! I was confused innit. Jeremy is the bassist's name. And I reckon he's about right, I played with Zulu on the same bill as the Levellers, there were loads of people there like that Thank you Si !
I would have used tarquin for an example. -
The first time I heard about them was when a friend had this made up - looks like it came out of Terminator 2:
Holy crap, i'd be scared to touch that Pretttyyyyyyyyyy

Instead of playing the root and the 5th below, try using the 5th above.....
I only ever play bass at gigs, reheasals, recording or when working out a bassline for songwriting. The mere thought of sitting down with a book is making me yawn. I would say you're in a phase of being a band member and songwriter who happens to be the one who plays bass. That sounds pretty good to me. Learn something new when you need it for the band.
This. It is a good place.
