Encourage learners, or 'Tell it like it is'..?
I'll see your Harley and raise you a Hofner...
Bugger... -
'Bums On Seats' is the be all. Doesn't matter how you get there, I've done it with bands playing 50/50 covers and originals, and it can be done with a different type of covers setlist. We currently do it with a mixed alt/metal/rock setlist, it just takes some thought and effort.
Bums off of seats and dancing about, thus dehydrating themselves and going back to the bar is closer, but I fully agree. No slow songs, keep 'em moving, smile and put on a show and as long as they recognise 10% of your material they tend to be happy.

btw, pretty much always hatted, that there black trilby in my avatar (and it's 3 identical brothers) or a straw one for the summer (which has seen very little use). Haven't played a hot enough stage to need to take it off in a while, but here's hoping
And patch leads.... Recallable patch memories are you friends in the world of synthesis.
Yep, my old jen Sx1000 came with a load of templates for sounds that were bits of card with holes for the knobs, and lines drawn where you should put them for trumpets etc. Sounded nothing like it, and the cards got lost fairly quickly as I just wanted it to make scary noises with.
Knowing what textures to add and how to create them is IMO just as easy/difficult as knowing which notes to play and how to play them.
As is remembering how the knobs were when you got that lovely sound, never the same noise twice unless you've got a bit of paper.....
That's nice!!!!! Very nice. It looks like it would make for a good bedfellow.
Thanks man, I got rid of the old ply body it had, and joined it together with my old black strat, it looks like this now (and is still my no 1 go to guitar, and still held together with gaffa tape and blu-tack). -
Plus the indeed. Bangy noises are the gentleman's way of alerting one's audience to imminent on-stage activity.
Just out of interest has anybody ever actually blown up a speaker/amp by plugging/unplugging whilst it was on? I've been doing it for 25 or so years now, and never broken anything (except a couple of nervous types hearts)
I do hand exercises while I'm driving to the gig. Flex the wrists forward and back. Wiggle the fingers. Twist the wrists. Clench fists. All this leads to a very warm forearm, so i know I'm doing it right. yes, I get very strange looks when i'm stopped at traffic lights. I admit to occasionally doing it in full view, especially the finger waggling, just to freak people out. They think the very least I'm doing is casting spells. Maybe I am.
Genius! Now I need to stop doing gigs where I need to turn up 4 hours before we go on..... (Or 2 days in some cases)

And I thought I'd posted in here already... This one. Warmoth fretless Jazz neck, 1982 Ibanez Roadstar body, Bridge pup is a Seymour Duncan Ric replacement hacked down to fit, neck pup is out of an old Kay SG bass copy (bloody lovely sound since you ask) bridge was a cheapy ebay thing, and the pots are rescued from old projet basses. Yes the refinish got interrupted 3 years ago and I never got round to finishing it, however, I quite like the not-quite-stripped look it has.
-
Yep, get them all the time, particularly if I don't bother practicing much between gigs. Keep them callouses up or you lose them. Especially if you like digging in and hitting the thing hard.

I like the bangy noises.
I know a guy who built a studio in his garden , kitted it out with instruments , all for his kids, they are all in thier 20s now and not one of them can play anything, they didn't have the bug!
This is because getting into music and playing rock and roll is supposed to piss your parents off, teenagers rebel. -
How has your day been as a bassist?

Not bad, we're going on tour for a week in Brazil in october due to one of our songs being on an advert for handbags. -
Encourage learners, or 'Tell it like it is'..?
Dave Vader replied to Dad3353's topic in General Discussion
Back when I was a kid learning to play piano and guitar, there were plenty of times I felt it was too hard and thought about giving up. Luckily for me the internet didn't exist back then, so i didn't post about it online and get somebody I had never met telling me I should. I spoke to my dog about it, and he said woof, which was meaningless, and like most kids, i went back had another go and it got easier. I am glad that there weren't people on the internet telling kids to give up 4 weeks into trying to play when i was a kid, or I would have had a totally different life. -
Right, over the course of the last year or so I have now read this whole thread. And paid attention to all of it. What I would like to know now is what are the best warm up/ warm down exercised for the left hand (and right, why not) that can be done surreptitiously before a gig without looking totally mental. Don't mind if I look a bit crazy, but starting to get a few twinges in the left wrist now, probably got appalling left hand technique as well (trying to work on that, please don't tell me to get lessons, I can barely afford electricity and food at the moment) all pointers are good. At the mo I am trying to keep my wrist as straight as possible, use the tips of my fingers, and not too worried about thumb straightness. I think the problem might be that I am coming from a guitar point of view (always where I come from sadly) and my hand wants to hold a I-V-Octave I position for raking up and down those shapes (like a power chord) cos that's how a lot of my lines end up. I'm not actually holding it, but there's some kind of phantom trying to keep the fingers as close to this as possible, which is a bitch on an F in 1st pos. Links to handy guides, and personal experiences all welcome.

"What's your fee for dep work?". Errrr, dunno...
Dave Vader replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
I think that any dep should probably be told if you need to turn up in the middle of the afternoon for sound check on a week day gig (well a friday) and not find out on the tuesday after a friendly "alright mate, what time for the gig on friday and where is it?" email. Especially if it's a 2 hour drive away and the bastards know I do a normal day job that doesn't end til 5. Especially when it's been booked for months... Twats. This is why I left that band.... -
I can see a couple of bass guitars in the picture but what are those funny looking things with 6 strings on ??
I bought them by mistake, they looked the same from a distance.

Not all of it, some has gone, some more has come, and a lot of it isn't in the picture. But you get the gist.

How soon after first picking a bass up did you gig?
Dave Vader replied to bobpalt's topic in General Discussion
Bass player in a band I was in got knocked out by the bouncers just before a gig, he went to hospital, I picked up his bass and did the gig with a bloke I knew who could handle the guitar parts ok. So, about 5 seconds -
Interesting comment, this. I was at a party/gig last week when numerous guitarists got up and played through an old Vox AC15 amp. I heard a Les Paul, three Strats (US and Japanese), a Squier Tele, a ladida PRS and a Steinberger headless played through the Vox - yes there were differences but the tones I heard were very similar - strange that.
Vox have a seriously distinctive tone to their amps, that'll happen, and most guitarists use fairly standard roundwound strings (if we're still claiming strings make a difference. Old AC15s are very lovely, and make "that" noise. It is good.
Thats fair enough but from my experience I remember some of these books being very inaccurate !
Yep, I bought a few when I was a kid, and they were all in Eb and wrong.
