I genuinely took yesterday afternoon off work to get the drums finished. Managed to put the bass in there as well while I was at it. I may make the deadline yet...

Cancel the Holiday Mrs Vader, i have drums to program (this may hurt)
Some probably would, but that's fan-dom for you and it happens with all sorts of things from people queueing up to see the Mona Lisa to camping outside an Apple store to buy the latest iPhone. It's hardly a phenomenon unique to The Beatles, though it is more apparent because there are so may people who like them. THAT'S the point.
Except that when you queue to see the Mona Lisa, you get to see the Mona Lisa, a genuine work of genius and a proper famous work of art. When you queue up to get the latest iPhone, you get the latest iPhone. When you go to see where Paul McCartney lived 50 years ago you get to see a very ordinary house exactly like a lot of other very ordinary houses. You do not get to see Paul McCartney. There appears to be no real merits to it. I can understand wanting to go to the Cavern or the Star Club and see where the Beatles cut their teeth, just. Or hanging around outside where Macca lives now to get a glimpse of him (and shout "Frog Chorus" thanks Skol). Just about.... But looking at an ordinary terraced house maketh no sense to me at all. Btw. It really is shocking how protective some of us get over music we didn't write isn't it? Also, I still like the Beatles, and accept that they were influential (don't think anyone here has denied their influence just the innovations.) And BRX is right, go and listen to the Residents for some outstanding and incredibly varied work that only a few people like.

What's the closing date for entries this month? I only ask cos this one is getting away from me and needs a lot of attention to finish, and I have stuff to do with the wife over the next couple of weeks, and some holiday owing from work (seriously considering taking time off work to finish this, how screwed up is that?)

I had my guitar on hand in case I wanted to play. I didn't want to, i think most guests were pleased about that.

The older I get, the harder it is to listen to new bands.....

I think Lemmy said something once about the next generations music being horrible and weird and hard for us to understand, and how this is entirely right and how it should be. -
Will There Ever Be Another Great Innovator?
I have a feeling that Mr Polsfuss would have disagreed with you there.
Yeah, I am being slightly deliberately provocative. However, I've never got a clean sound I like from a Les. Have from an SG though interestingly. Obviously it's designer did some pretty nifty tunes on his, but I don't like the sound of it. And it's fairly significant that they'd stopped production on them until Clapton et al started making exciting noises with them. -
They don't scream any more, they don't nick things out of his garden, they just stand there quietly taking photos of the house where someone famous lived half a century ago. Doesn't that speak volumes?
Yep, that people have very little to do these days. Really? Take reverential photos of a house? Gracelands i can understand as it is a completely mental house, but not some nondescript terrace in Liverpool with a blue plaque on the wall. Crazy....
What new technology did Clapton use?
Fuzz-Face, High gain amps, squealy feedback, not exactly new, but only just beginning to be used that way. The Les Paul was a piece of crap til people started overdriving it. Can't do cleans for crap. -
Kurt Cobain as an innovator? Please... he spent most of his career copying bands like Killing Joke and The Pixies. Nothing really new there.
And don't forget the Meat Puppets and Dinosaur Jr. -
The Beatles were not the first, but almost so, to write their own material; lyrics, melodies, arrangements, and become very popular. Before, music was composed by a composer, lyrics provided by a song writer, and musicians played what others had written, generally. The Beatles changed that. There were many other influences, but this was indeed a major change in the whole music cosmos, not simply 'pop' music. Whether one likes what they did or not, this was a huge change for all of us. There are other examples, but none so immensely widespread. Just my tuppence-worth.
Buddy Holly.
Not true at all. That would be like saying a saw a couple of early pencil sketches by Van Gogh so I don't t have to see anything else to get what he does. Or, I saw Michael Cain in Jaw2 and can't understand why people say he's such a good actor.
Michael Caine was in Jaws the Revenge (no 4) it was sh*te. Jaws 2 is quite good.
The Guardian's music "expert" (their word not mine) was quoted in The Independant as saying that history proves that Kraftwerk were more influential in music than The Beatles. Even I snorted in derision.
Have you heard all the electronic music that has permeated the charts for the last 30 odd years? Wouldn't be there without Kraftwerk. The guitary pap would still be around without the Beatles. More guesswork, the Beatles start getting interesting (and less of a rock and roll covers band) when they come back from America, and come out with Rubber Soul and Revolver. Interestingly, in the clubs of America, fledgling Jefferson Airplanes and Grateful Deads are doing music not disimilar to this. The Tommorow Never Knows thing mentioned earlier, draws on stuff that is quite obscure, but Lennon was into weird stuff, and drew from this. The first ever recorded guitar feedback on I feel fine, around the same time as the Young Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck etc, were knocking out loud as hell blues tunes in the clubs of London, and abusing feedback. The Sergeant Pepper psychedelia thing comes out slightly after Zappa and Hendrix etc. begin launching sonic assaults on audiences across the USA. I'm not saying the Beatles weren't the first band to record this stuff, and stick a load of things together coherently, but to claim they invented it all is juts plain wrong. Without Buddy Holly, they would have been nothing, and I reckon Macca would agree with me. Btw, I have all the Beatles albums, and love most of them (Octopus Garden and Ob-la-di Ob-la-da notwithstanding) but after listening, I did what I always do and looked around for their influences (cos I started listening to the Beatles properly cos they were always cited as influences). Due to their sheer popularity they are undoubtedly influential, but a lot of people done't bother looking to see where they got their own influences from, thus assuming inventiveness where there was less than assumed. BTw. George Martin is a ^%&*ing genius though.

The Beatles listened to a lot of stuff by bands no-one was really listening to, and brought those sounds to the masses. Influential more than innovative I think you'll find.

yep. It is an acquired taste. And the reason I just bought a heavily modified red knob fender super 60.

Your Bass Lines - How Quickly Do They Come?
Dave Vader replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I've done the poll but non of the questions quite fit to how i work. 1) The lines come very quickly but i constantly refine them so they change a lot. 2) I've always had control over my lines but if someone (guitarist, producer, keyboard player) offers a good idea and it works i will use it 3) Sometimes I play simple music, sometimes complex, never that challenging 4) tHe amount i write a year varies
I would like to have written that, as it is also true for me. -
I'm afraid i think FB is the way it is. last year we did a number of original gigs and all the promoters were pushing the use of FB for promoting. It's basically gonna become SKYNET
You're not wrong, but it's do it or get nowt. Most of the festival bookers this year are after facebook and soundcloud links, and that's about it.

Things are coming together, I appear to be way out of my comfort zone, and having to simplify it down. There are a lot of voice notes on my phone, largely of me humming tunes and their harmonies... hope I can play them...
Lucky devil, I own a car that sometimes doesn't move me at all...it doesn't move.
I now have 2 that while moveable, are incapable of washing their own windscreens. Though i am not a mechanic i feel qualified to make the judgement that both my cars are a bit sh&t.
Is that an AC30 in the background? Christ, sitting it on top of a bookcase - that's brave!
Nope, it's a V15 (look them up, the amp that killed Vox's reputation) and an old kitchen cabinet thing that is stronger than a bookcase. Equally, the V15 can be lifted with one hand (it's a 2x10) and is fairly indestructible.
Of course If it moves you that's all that matters.
My car moves me, but it doesn't really matter. *shallow much*
If you don't mind me asking, where and how will your album be distributed (physical, digital?) and what extras in terms of promotion and advertising will your band be getting as part of the deal?
The main benefit is the physical distribution side, as they have a link to some major distribution types. Though as you say that is dying off now anyway. FWIW I never signed or saw this contract, it was all sorted out with our singer, who was a solo artist at the time, so I'm still the hired help as far as that's concerned. Also, the record label appear to have done bugger all in the way of promotion and advertising, whereas the management have been ace. However, I am not privy to all the discussions and wrangling that has gone on in the last year, and may have the wrong end of the stick. most of those in charge appear to be stuck in the 80s though where the music biz is concerned. This is changing, as we appear to be moving towards a more self-managed system, with no objections from anybody else yet.
-
I don't see how it can offer anything a band can't do themselves and retain 100% of the profits at the same time.
I do agree, but some musicians are a bit flaky, fuzzy headed and not keen on doing the businessy promoty stuff. Thus the "labels" are damn useful for doing the legwork while you just play tunes and float along. Though a friendly manager type would do the job a lot better. FWIW, our label are not funding the 2nd album (not even close to major) but will do the distribution side of it for us if we ever get it done.

And here she is, while briefly wearing a set of Dimarzio humbuckers. They were nice too....
