What do you ask when advertising for a vocalist?
Dave Vader replied to xgsjx's topic in General Discussion
Whenever anyone applies for position of singer, ask for details of previous bands/recordings. Then do an internet search re the band, see if they`ve gigged or not. Obviously any recordings will give a good idea if you want to proceed with them. I`d also ask what gear they have - mics/pa etc?
This, definitely, I don't have the time to help people with no experience anymore, and if they're made it to any age over 25 without having sung through a microphone before, they probably aren't going to be much cop. Maybe a bit sweeping and mean, but will save you a lot of hassle. -
Playing the same stuff over and over, and playing on your own both suck Marv. Say yes to a weird side project that throws you out of your comfort zone, and you'll have fun with it again.

January - Composition Competition - VOTING TIME!!!
Dave Vader replied to charic's topic in Recording
My studio is in the garage, it is &^%$ing cold out there. If it wams up I'll be back in action next month. Will listen and vote later. -
Get any old plastic ones, heat them up a bit with a lighter, stick round your thumb til it goes cold, and hey presto, one custom fitting pick. I kid you not, I've been doing this for years.
-
Tap foot, nod head, maybe have a wander. Stately ways to look ok on a stage without working too hard. (also 20 years older than some band members, but then they are 15, it is weird)
also that bitza jazz has a cousin in my bitsa precision spooky!
Love that decal. Very subtle...

Jazz from Hell for Bilbo I think Though I am still the only person I know who liked it.
Thanks to the wonders of Spotify, I have just heard Sheik Yerbouti for the first time. Interesting but a bit like using nanotechnology to create artificial dog poo.
Which would be excellent IMHO
-
That's cos you bought that guitar, go on, pick that up instead Marv. Play some angus riffs....
-
Never had this problem, but I can understand why it would grate. My current gig was got by a bit of a punt on a month and a half old advert, which I didn't get a reply to until a month after I sent it. So there is hope, it's a good gig as well.

every bass I own.

I love it when a plan comes together...Fenderbird content ahead...
Dave Vader replied to Muzz's topic in Gear Gallery
Oh that is lovely and I want it. -
I don't c I don't change anything either, in fact my amp (Markbass LM2) is usually set flat. It's a technique thing, I know people at college who slap P basses strung with flats, and they still sound fine.
I have been seen to do it with a fretless p bass strung with flats. Sounded fine as well.

Heard myself sing through a mic for the first time...
Dave Vader replied to cocco's topic in General Discussion
Just keep doing it, the more you sing the better at it you get. And without the record on in the background, that doesn't help and it hides your mistakes. I have had to sing in every band I've ever been in, simply cos I was the only one with enough bottle to do it back when we were 12 years old (also I had sung in both church and school choirs and so was bloody loud). I was shocking then, I am almost passable now 23 years later. -
Anyone think Bach became a great composer - who gave millions the musical experiences of their lives - by being detached from "Heart" or detached from "Head"? best, bert
I think that's why most of us seem to be saying it's both. As I can't imagine Bach putting all of that together without a great deal of head (chuckles) and equally you don't write themes that heart-stoppingly beautiful without feeling every tiny note of it with your heart.

Turns out this is buggered, after extensive testing, and talking to Oli, unless you want a paperweight, or novelty fridge magnet? For sale, one Eminence Delta 10" Driver.350 watts at 8 ohms. Bought from Mr Foxen of this parish a couple of years ago for a project I never finished. Has previously been damaged, but tiny hole was expertly sealed before I received it, and all seems fine with it now. I have no need of this, and it's taking up space that I desperately need for more stuff I will probably never use. Here are some pictures. I am finally parting with my beloved Laney Mighty Bass, that was found in the corner of the function room of my old pub when we moved out. It has been in my possession for the last 15 years, and very useful too. It is small, simple and makes a noise that is just loud enough to learn songs with from a CD or suchlike. It is apparently indestructible having been chucked all over the place, and kept in my studio/garage where it is not warm. However, I had to buy a Roland microcube to do loads of busking gigs with over the next year or so, and I need space in the garage, as I am also getting a new guitar amp this month, and the amp stack is getting out of hand. So I would very much like to pass this on to anyone who can make use of it. Anyone from the Devon area will reminisce fondly over the Bill Greehalgh sticker on the front, which makes it worth the entrance fee all by itself. Sealed back, doesn't say what the wattage is, but not much. Make me an offer if you think I'm asking too much. Most of that is to cover the postage and packing, come and buy me a pint in the pub and you can have it for a tenner. Here are some pictures..... I tend to record midi to my old outboard synths (mostly a Roland D110) so it's just sending midi data as a placeholder, and then throw it at softsynths once I've got the notes right, and everything else in place musically.
-
Nope the 9050MLs, 50-100, they're lovely, not too thick, but doesn't lose it on the top G. Only 18 quid a go these days as well. Quite bright, so you can slap the buggers too if you're that way inclined. Not sure if it's legal, but it's a faker so I reckon the rickenwaffe are already after me anyway
-
Same as he said, but only if he stops wanting it obviously...
-
True, otherwise all my compositions would be me humming a jaunty tune, with perhaps some chords underneath, strummed on an autoharp. As that is what the heart wants.... The head knows I am clearly a sap....
How do I make that work turning a midi track into an audio one, Garry?
mute all your other tracks and record a mono mixdown track with just your midi instrument playing. Move it to a spare audio track and rename it so you know what it is. Job done (at least that's how I do it)

I use fender flats on my Rickenfaker. Sounds luvverly.
