When I write stuff it tends to go wherever it wants to, if I try and pull it into a more interesting direction it will inevitably snap back. Or equally, if it wants to be insanely complicated it goes that way even when I try and slap it down. What comes from my head comes from my head, though I do like to start with simple stuff like the 2 chord vamp, and add more and more intricate layers over the top until you barely notice it is there. Attempting to force unnecessarily complex structures is madness, that way lies Jazz.....

I have now decided to post in this thread. It appears to be getting interesting....
I don't think so, but if you fond one let me know and I'll paste it in. . Some of Chopin's other quotes include "Oh I say, get your petticoats off" and "yes, it's easier to play in the nip" etc... Not massively appropriate for a bass playing forum. ...or is it?
Very appropriate for this bass playing forum i reckon.

After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.' Frederic Chopin
Is there thread on this forum where you haven't quoted that yet Paul? P.S. Inventor of post-womble here. You can do it with anything.

There is video footage of me from 1992 playing in a living room at what I can only assume was a squat party. I was ripped off my tits, and I slowly slide down the wall into the fireplace, and then manage to climb back up again, at no point do I let go of my stratocaster, and I don't seem to miss a note either. Classy... I seem to remember a festival in '99 where a bottle of Thai rum and an 8th of something else from thailand led me to fall off the front of the stage. Not so classy.....
Has he got a blue/white 5 string Ibanez (a rather fetching paint job)? Does the gentleman in question sometimes don a rather fine goatee? Has he been known to play um...Maybe Naked...in the past?
Erm... maybe? In fact yes, and I know Mo would probably never come on here, as he pissed himself laughing when i told him of it's existence a few years ago.

FWIW from the other end, as a guitar player, I have occasionally been stuck playing with bassists who want all the frequencies for themselves. Even my super tinny old Vox V-15 with a telecaster jammed on the bridge pickup needed to be cranked all the way up to "ear-bleeding death volume" to get round mr roundwound Ibanez Trace Elliot rig and his zingy massiveness. Some of you probably know who this guy is, he is also one of my oldest and dearest friends, and has a killer tone. But you will not get over his bass with EQ alone.

Legacy strings have no silk, and are cheap.... Oh, no the A is an 85. Would have been good though.

I don't have "a sound". Is something wrong with me?
Dave Vader replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
You are suffering from the musicians equivalent of body dysmorphic disorder i.e. you perceive your own sound differently to how other people do and differently to other peoples sound. Lots of guitarists and bass players suffer from this IME.
I did until someone else used my rig at a local outdoor event. It sounded bloody lovely. -
Use tuner, check with other guys in the band that we're all in tune with each other (old fashioned way, "ere mate, gis an e") then off you go. As to the OP, try playing along with Black Sabbath vol 4, I have to twist the pitch control on my turntable almost ever other song to save constant retuning. Great album though.

There are two types of drinking muso, and I have been both. There are those who believe it is rock and roll to get utterly off their tits, and then believe they are the greatest musician to grace a stage. Like Burrito says, video them. They will change their minds, I did. And those of us who like a drink, and can tell when they're about to hit the "oh crap I can't see" level, and stop/slow down. FWIW I changed to bass cos I thought it would be easier to play pissed than a guitar. I was right, to a point. I am unfortunate enough to exist a couple of drinks below sober in my natural state (see Captain Vimes of the ANkh-Morpork City watch for more details on this phenomena).

this puts me off of fenders just a tad..
Yes. But some Fender haters just won't let it lie for some reason! If you don't like Fenders, don't buy one, it's very simple. And those of us who like Fenders aren't going to be swayed by forum opinions, so stop being control freaks!
Who made your bass again Discreet? I know what it says on the headstock but.... -
If you haven't found 'your sound' yet I don't want to spoil the surprise but it's a P bass into an Ampeg, no effects 'or any of that rubbish'. I've seen enough 'OMG I found my sound' threads to know that it's always the same sound, and it's odd because it seems like it would be the first sound you'd try.
Yep, and I managed to do it with a Ric and an ashdown once. Still sounded like that one though. -
Cheers Paul, I need to wait on the rest of the band to ok the mix we have now, and then I will send it on over to you via drop box. From the rough messing about with it we did, it's about a 4-5% increase we're after, so nothing major. Just enough to give it a bit more oomph. PM me your email address so I can share the dropbox folder with you.

Hello lovely Basschat people. My band has recently recorded a little 3 track demo in a local studio run by a hobbyist who does it on the cheap. Nice guy, good mix, trouble is, our wonderful frontperson has decided we recorded one of the tracks a wee bit slow, and we tend to agree. However, the nice studio chap (who runs logic) can't speed it up without it sounding glitchy and losing half the quality. He has suggested to us that Reaper is bloody brilliant at speeding up tracks without changing pitch or going glitchy. My system is too old and knackered to run any new software, and I assume it's a fairly quick and easy job, so if anybody out there would like to do us a favour and speed it up for us without any glitchy nastiness I would be very appreciative, free would be nicest, but if you want paying, I'm sure we can stump up a few quid to make it worth your while. If you're in Devon I'll meet up with you and buy you a pint at the very least for your trouble. Hope somebody can help us, we will be very grateful. Dave

You are definitely weird, diet coke? That's just wrong.... -
I think those of us suggesting key changes, playing in different parts of the neck etc. are probably those of us who have never played this particular style of super-metally grindy noise before. It's all about the open strings, which don't work if they aren't down tuned. Same sort of crap you get from certain types of guitar player who say capos are cheating, and altered tunings are wrong. Minds... open... now.
That whole Joy Division / New Order thing is my era , but I didn't like it at the time and I still don't like it now . I can see how they bands were influential , but I think their influence is more cultural than musical .
Have you listened to any of the "indie" music that has come out in the last 20 or 30 years? Wouldn't have happened without Joy Division and Hooky's "awful" bass lines. Certainly wouldn't sound the same. Also, Goth. There would be no such thing without Joy Division. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it didn't influence a whole generation of musicians, and therefore music.

I would take a punt that they've done more than that. Not that I am condoning this sort of crap, but all the TV miming looks like hard work.
Good afternoon. Back on topic - C'mon, how many of us old boys tried to tune up our bass G string to the guitards open G, got the octave wrong and bust a string then?
No, but I once tuned the G on my guitar an octave too low using an electronic tuner in a loud backstage area. I had just dropped the bloody thing off the back of the stage (hence the string being so far out) 1st number was interesting, then it got to the solo, and it was even more interesting as I realised why it sounded so very cool before that point.... I was much happier when we all tuned up through amps to each other...
Hooky is free to do his thing because the bulk of the "bassline" is sequenced. You could do the same thing on the bottom couple of strings on a guitar, but it wouldn't have anywhere near the same visual impact. That's the clever bit.
No you can't, I've heard people try, it sounds rubbish. The great thing about hooky's playing is precisely the squeezed and on the edge sound you get from playing a bass right up at the top of the neck, rather than just whacking it out on a guitar. Same reason those high waily notes on guitars sound nicer. Those saying Peter Hook is "not worthy" really need to redefine worthy.

Anyone got any thoughts on the Roland Micro Cube?
Dave Vader replied to rasher80's topic in Other Instruments
I have the bass one, it is cracking. I stuck my SG through it the other day, and it's pretty good for guitar as well. So I stuck my acoustic into it, and it was lovely. Get the bass one, versatility is a good thing. -

Bb! Love the key and if you have ever played with a horn section you will know it well Just to clear my own ignorance, why do you have to de-tune?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that with a name like Christhammer666 it's because it's very heavy, and uses a lot of open strings, that are currently downtuned to C. Thus the downtuning thing. Might be wrong, is there a Motown horn Section as well CH666? are you doing showtunes?
