I don't get those rockinbetters :-(
I do, i've got one, it's nice. I don't get these US made fenders...

At what stage do you call yourself a bass player?
Dave Vader replied to Blademan_98's topic in General Discussion
at the stage in the evening when you do not wish to be asked about your musical exploits, and only wish for the reply, "oh that's nice". That is the stage at which you should call yourself a bass player, rather than a musician or other instrument player. -
The basses you love to hate thread.

Friend of mine has a 5 string fretless stagg and swears by it. He got rid of everything else and just plays that now. Horses for courses and all that. -
So a Rockinbetter isn't a Rickenbacker & a Rockinbetter isn't a Tokai?
Dave Vader replied to iconic's topic in Bass Guitars
Jon (bassassin) who was always the expert in these things would tell you that Tokai have absolutely nothing to do with these. I defer to his judgement, particularly because i own one, and when i bought it it was a piece of junk unfit for purpose. Bit of twiddling and it's lovely now, but nowt like any of the genuine old Tokais i had back in the 90s, which were great. -
Grrrrrr For the price of a t-bird and the amount of time gibson have had to perfect the "design" I resent having to tweak the bugger just to get a well balanced bass, at the end of the day I prefer to play on a well balanced peice of wood with a good allroung range (exepting my P bass which has a,,,,,p bass range but its allowed) rather than an unweildy coffe table . Oh and for the record, some of the cheap tanglewoods and aria basses I have played are just as good as alot of branded mid range basses...flame returned
You have a point. Flame off. I was thinking of the epi t-bird, most of the gibby ones I've played have balanced ok. It's just that the heads tend to snap off for no good reason. -
I have to disagree, have you played a lindo or a stagg, or tried to let go of a thunderbird without the headstock brutaly saluting Isaac newton? It's not what you play, its how you play it, and if you try to bass guitar using a wet turd, your hands get shity. Word.
Yes and yes, couple of twiddles on the bridge and truss rod and they were fine. Quick move of the strap button/chuck some weight on the body end of your strap and the t-bird stays put just lovely. If you can't play bass well you may need to buy a more expensive instrument to make up for it. *flame on....* -
Had a good gig in Okehampton last night. It was the carnival so the town was packed. We hadn't played for weeks, or even seen each other for that matter! There were a few 'moments' but we really enjoyed it and the punters seemed to as well. We were chatting to happy people after each set. I used my new amp for the first time and have just put a SD quarter pounder in the P bass. I was grinning all night. Best sound I have had for a while.
Are you playing for Hooked now then? Excellent, say hi to Frankie and Debbie from me. Missed it sadly as I was in Caterham for a wedding this weekend.
Nice one Dave! I'm definitely getting the 80s vibe from this one. Sounds like you're pretty damn handy with a guitar too. Good work mate.
Cheers Skol (was a guitar player for a good 20 years before I thought I might turn my hand to bass properly, cheating) Wife is away for a few days now, so I can hook up the speakers one night this week and play everyone's stuff loud to make my voting decisions.
Valerie seems to be turning into the future Mustang Sally with all the bands I've Depped with lately, it's beginning to grate...
+ the 1. -
http://soundcloud.com/plastic-squirrel/fighting-feet And I'm in. It seems to have reminded me of the movies of the 1980s somehow, I have channelled my inner faltermeyer, not sure if this is a good thing or not.....
I forget how fortunate I am. I have my own house, terraced semi detatched, My neighbour has a drum kit and we operate on a live and let live basis. It's only a shame she can't play it better.
Do you Jam throught the walls? I've always lived next to noisy kids who play dance music all night long (no matter where i move to apparently) so we take it as read that we cannot complain about each others noise. It is good. -
Go for option 1 now, use the experience to have a better chance of achieving 2 at a later date.
Absolutely this. You'll be kicking yourself forever if you don't do it. I've spent most of my time in middling bands playing music I don't like with people I barely get on with. At least you get a chance to do that but with some killer gigs and good times thrown in. (I regret everything )

I get more kicks hearing my own music than I do other bands'
Dave Vader replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
if you are enjoying your own music more than other people, then you are doing it right. After all the only reason to write music is to write something that you like. If you do like it, then you are winning. Somebody once said, "If you don't like supermarket music, then start writing supermarket music" you can take the supermarket out of that and apply it to anything you want. Nobody but me would enjoy the stuff i write, and I have never cared, I like it. -
oil finish, never bother with wax or retouching it. My two look like utter crap after a couple of years of gigging them. Job done.

Well played Chris, you cast doubt and bagged yourself a bargain

I like it, it sounds like the Stones. This is a good thing.
I've never seen an old instrument with corroded metal parts. Chrome plating tends to hold up... Gibson gold plating not so much.
Come see my collection of rusty crap then. Sweaty hands and storage in a succession of flats with damp problems will do the job pretty well.
I think that analgy doesn't stand up at all. Try: I like football so much that I'm going to go into pubs and provide them with free satellite football so they don't have to keep paying Sky. All the equipment, programs and maintenance absolutely free, just so I can go down whenever I'm not doing anything else and watch with my mates.
Not quite, cos we're talking about Live music (so smaller intake to start with, not the huge broadcast budget) and Pros vs Amateurs, any band playing for free that i have ever seen has usually been the musical equivalent of blokes playing footy down the park. Your analogy has Sky as the victim (which is no bad thing). If I donated a free jukebox to my local, that would be a fine philanthropic thing to do, and be like the free Sky thing you mentioned. Try, premiership football on telly in pubs is killing the gate take at your local footy club and you'll be closer.

I have found that rather than paying for tickets to watch premiership football, i can nip down the park and watch a bunch of kids playing the same game for free. I got a letter from Wayne Rooney telling me to stop supporting them as they were doing him out of a job, </fatuousjoke>
