If you think you have to be fabulously talented to do that, then you have low expectations. And it's not like these are original songs you'd have to learn, you'll have heard most of them enough to have the arrangements fairly clear already. Any reasonably competent intermediate performing musician should be able to learn a set, practice it at home for a week, turn up to a rehearsal and expect themselves and the band to make a passable performance of it first go. That's just what you have to do. Four rehearsals is a waste of time and money.
Nige has the right of it sadly. I have done dep gigs for mates for as little as a few free pints out of them, but they drive me to the gig, and they don't make me rehearse unless I think I might need it (which generally I don't, as long as they stick to the records and let me know of any key changes). Not to disparage anybody here, but if you're good enough to be gigging in public. learning a couple of sets of standard covers in a week and then popping along to the gig with no prior meeting should be fine. Last year I was in an originals band that didn't meet til the first gig, we just learned the demos we were sent and played them. It was fine. If you can't do this, then his here gig advertised is good experience for you, go along and get the hang of depping, it is quite lucrative once you've got the hang of it. -
The one-off was the best way (though should have been a few more dates to fill demand) that way the "I want to see Zeppelin and i cuoldn't cos i wasn't alive" crowd got a bite at it, and they didn't become Quo or McCartney to be wheeled out at every single public event and become universally hated by all right thinking people, despite having previously done great work. Zeppelin are probably my favourite band ever, and I would give my left nut to see them, but not at the expense of them becoming like the aforementioned whores.
Because i want to unwind, maybe grab something to eat, watch a bit of TV when i get in, not chat or be told its late and we should go to bed (to sleep, nothing else). Im not knocking her, just that i like to be left along when i get in, especially if ive been travelling for a few hours.
Hate to say it but +1 I love my wife, but I'd rather be on me own at that time. With cider, that I am not being told off for drinking.

All I have so far is some weird noises I sang into my phone while I was walking the dog on the moors yesterday morning, must put them into my fingers and get started properly soon.

Like it Nige (the bass is too loud ) I fully intended to begin work on mine today, but it is sunny and I have cider, so it might go a bit wrong....

I have spent the last 10-15 years doing mostly covers, and the 10 or so years before that doing originals but recently left all the covers bands, and now just play for an original artist (I'm in her backing band, does that make me a session player?) so I voted originals. It felt nice -

More readers wives than proper porn, my Sue Ryder Telecaster, which now has fender japan pickups and a wilkinson bridge (plus some old squier 250k pots courtesy of Ki0gon, ta John) oh and a switch that doesn't break when you look at it. Also a classic Dave gaffa taped pickguard (cheaper than a new one) Amusingly the wilkinson bridge didn't cover the pickup rout underneath it, so there's a bit of copper tape covering the hole. For some reason I can't put this thing down, and I've had a lot of telecasters over the years. This one is a bit good (and shouldn't be).

String ground is the wire from the bridge to the volume pot (or shielding if you like). I have never been confident enough of my shielding to ground to the cavity wall from the bridge for what it's worth (plus I kept buggering up the tape with the soldering iron). If you need help then yeah, come over, you know the rules, bring booze
-
Yep, and yep. If you are super confident of your shielding, the string ground should now go to the cavity, not the pot. You'll soon hear if you got it right.

I'm not selling it....

This started life as a Rockinbetter, it is ace. Though I haven't had my hands on a real Ric in a good 15 years and can't remember what they play like. Sorry if this doesn't help, but any excuse to post the rickenbastard somewhere....
