So, I am now officially quite fond of my Harley benton EUB, but the piezo pickup does a good line in unexpected WHUMPH! noises where you are least expecting them. I have a couple of old Kent Armstrong humbuckers lying about, and I was thinking I might sort out some kind of rig to mount one of them on the EUB. I want to use this and the piezo, preferably on some kind of blend circuit, or maybe just switch between the two. The thing I'm wondering about is whether to put the switch in before or after the preamp, as I have always run the KA passive, and it's plenty loud enough on a normal electric bass. But it might be interesting to hear how it reacts with the (cheap and nasty) HB preamp in the bass. Any ideas chaps? Or shall I just go the old fashioned way and try one after the other...

Muse - Madness, first impressions?
Dave Vader replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
Nope you can have that. I've always said they sounded like Queen, shame they have now reached the point where Queen became unlistenable bollocks... IMHO etc. etc. -
if he could not think of anything relevant (which was most of the time) - would simply say "God, that's a dreadful tie you're wearing."
Yeah, but in his defence you do own some dreadful ties skank.....

Muse - Madness, first impressions?

I heard it and wanted to break free..... -
If you are unable to play naked in public without being arrested for indecent exposure then your strap is at the wrong height. (I do have gorilla arms btw)

Utterly non-bass related, but I was getting a great deal of RSI from constant computer work, and my wrists started doing carpal feeling cramps at one point, so i bought a powerball, and using it reeeaaaalllly slowly for about 10 minutes a day really did help. Which meant all my non bass related injuries stopped getting in the way of my bass playing.

September Composition Competition - VOTING TIME!!!!
^ I was just thinking the same! Going to re-listen to them all tonight. It's great how everyone was inspired by the photo in different ways - and interesting how so many folks ended up producing something downbeat and melancholic... a symptom of us being moody bass players, perhaps?! Anyway, good luck to one and all in the voting! We're all winners; group hug, etc, etc. Does it help to have a heart-wrenching back story as with the X-Factor? If so I'll post some photos of me in my youth, wearing some truly traumatic home-knitted jumpers. That should do the trick. Cheers
+1 as for heart wrenching, I cut my finger on saturday, it still hurts a bit... -
Strip it, then sand it down. Only ever been a problem if it's a particularly old neck, as you then have to match the new lacquer with the rest of the neck. Good luck.

Oh, that's near me, and I can do a passable impression of rubbish (ask anyone I've played for) might do it for s**ts and giggles.

That's great Skol, I agree with Bilbo on the vocals, perfect for the track. Drip hop is the future....
-
Yeah, it's been really interesting getting all the different mindsets on the picture. Now stop posting here, and get yours done Skol....

http://soundcloud.com/plastic-squirrel/slightly-rattled-bc Here it is, got away from me a bit this one did. Not too bad, even my banjo hating wife quite likes it.

Okay, I think I've heard most of the competition now, and having just finished the final mix on mine, I am fairly sure I'm not going to win. However, it has forced me to actually finish something for once. Which is a good thing, hope we keep this up, it's really good fun. I am mightily impressed with everyone's work, would point out my favourites, but favouritism is very nice. I'll just say that I really like pianos. And am fond of drum and bassage. Will upload my ode to cider drenched summer evenings later when I am on a better connection (this studio PC is no good for the internet).

pelham blue as well....

I play bass cos it is easy and I can drink more that way, don't we all? Admit it....
-
Another night of furious recording last night (and ignoring all the things I should be doing) hopefully get the mix done tonight, or tomorrow morning, and then get a chance to listen to everyone else's stuff.

Aren't all bass players into Funk and Reggae???
Dave Vader replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
It even goes further than that. For a sequence of notes to be recognisable as a tune there must be repeating patterns within its structure. For a sound to be recognised as a musical note, its waveform must have a repeating structure. Otherwise you get noise. Repetition is everything. Even for bum notes, then you can claim you meant it, when otherwise you might get done for deviation. Hesitation (holding back on the beat) also works sometimes
Thank you for giving me an excuse to post this (flame proof suit on) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm8GJ6zbc5g -
Yeah, I know it would be useful, don't know anyone near me, and not sure if i can take it. Never had a lesson in my life on anything (well a few months of piano when I was 5, but i forgot most of that, and it put me off lessons). Learned all the theory in general music lessons at school, and am happily self taught otherwise. If I was near jake I probably would.

Will try (there was progress last night) if not I'll just say it was inspired by next months picture and enter it for that.
IF you monitor it through speakers cranked up loud enough you can. But if you monitor through headphones so the guitar cannot pickup the sound coming from the speakers then No you can't. But as good as these modelling boxes are, there is no substitute for a good old fashioned valve amp in my opinion! It's the same with plug-in synths et al - close, some very close, but not the same.
Thought so (keeps vox)
Tell me what you have said and when & I will send another request asking a similar question......
oooh, me too, lets start a chain...

Sorry to hijack, but for all you guys using these for recording, can you get lovely squealy high gain feedback like Gallagher or hendrix from one of these? Cos that's the only reason i am still hanging on to my old valve amps.

Just over the border up in devon, about 15 minutes on the blessed A30 gets you to me (from the border, not St Ives, where I was last month, nice place).
