Oh, I do the opposite to everyone else then, i try and stick the vocal line over the bass line as soon as I know what notes they're meant to be, so the whole thing sticks as one massive rhythmy-melodic thing in my head, and become inseperable. Works for me, quicker you get the vocal line integral to the bass line, quicker you can get back to looking at the pretty people in the audience rather than thinking about the song.
The Wal is hung on the wall. Double bass is on a stand. See picture no. 12 http://www.rightmove...y-30761458.html Narrow hallways militate against leaving basses in the thoroughfare. Thread resurrection! Anybody else had luck with this? i get enough twinges all over me these days that I think it's time to start doing something to prevent me doing any permanent damage. Shoulders this week (got a bit better last night after doing the 20 minute lie-down thing, but right back when I woke up, boo..) any positive experiences? Self teaching?
That's a flip it on its side one.
yeah, bit it's not very stable like that and I don't really want it falling over, I'm going for turn it down, mic it and stick it through the monitors instead.

Playing guitar in addition to bass...
Dave Vader replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I voted for playing guitar making me a better bassist, but to be fair it's the other way round. I have played guitar for 25 years, and dabbled here and there in bass mostly up until about 5 years ago, when I started to get more gigs on the bass, and learned to play it properly and not like a guitarist. Made me figure out that less is more, and not to twiddle about like a tit all over everything (though I still do, cos those high twiddly guitar notes and squealy feedback are never wrong ) Wasn't so much being a guitarist that helped my bass playing, more the fact that I know basic music stuff like what notes go in what chord, scales etc. etc. once you know that it's all just about mechanics. -
What is your favourite brand of strings? (Survey)

I like the green silks on fender flats, they go well on my green P-bass. And the fender colour system is different from D'addario's in that it uses classic fender colours like sea-foam green. But they are now pretty much D'addario chromes from what I read somewhere else. -
Dispersion theory in rubbish rooms proved. I have just come back from doing a gig on guitar with my trusty old vox 2x10, singer who was right in front of me was thoroughly deafened, while the horn section on the other side of the stage said they couldn't hear me. As you were....

I saw his doppelganger at the market today, selling beeswax polish. I chuckled more than I should.
Out of interest how many things have changed as little as the precision over this period of time and still sell in stupid numbers today?
apples, potatoes, bananas....
I can hear those strings buzzing without even touching them And I did a better job recutting a nut last night with a stanley knife and an old set of strings (though not pretty, there was also superglue and bone dust involved in the emergency nut repair) I also like his "grovers" and how straight he has managed to fit them...

Basic steps when DIY defretting for dummies and cheapskates
Those linked to by Skidders would appear to be perfect. I myself use 0.6 veneers.
+1 I used 0.6 (donated free to me by my cabinet maker friend) for my maple P neck. Works a treat. -

Also, don't believe you are being clever by taping off all the wood between the fret slots, as the supergluey-tapey mess left over is a lot harder to get off than it is to sand off any excess glue. Learned the hard way. -
You're being mean. I'm a guitarist who always uses std tuning, and rarely uses a capo. I can play most things in most places. Our band tries the original key, and changes it if the singers need to. I also play keys (a little) ... thankfully the machine has a transpose function
Yep. Me too, though I often find one should not be ashamed to use a capo, sometimes there is only one chord shape that will sound right, and if you don't have enough fingers, it will be horrid. I have often seen the faces of scorn as I slap a capo on my strat after dropping the E to a D for the Chain. I laugh them off as i play Lindsey Buckingham's lovely bluesy verse riffs without all the stumbly crap you get from guys too proud to capo up. (before whipping it off for the solo obviously). Change keys, if the singer can't make the note, you will sound sh*t, i have worked with guys like this before, they are idiots, and need to learn their own limitations.

I made my own radius block by taping sandpaper to the neck I was using (after the frets had come off, but before I stuck any gunk in the holes) and rubbing a lump of wood over it until it matched the radius. Saved a lot of hassle and money, and worked a treat. -

Boring boring old fender flats for me. They are the right price, and they sound nice and last ages. -
I too voted for my whole shebang including basses (still came in at under 750) should have been sub-500, a lot sub 500. 2 old Laney 15" Pa cabs with new celestion drivers in them, plus my harley benton head (the promethean clone) it is nice and it works. I would not say no to a nicer rig but have not the funds to justify it,

Lots, in many different guises. can't work it out, since 1989 I've done many gigs, plus had the odd quiet spell where I have either been in a new place looking for people, or gibbering quietly to myself in a dark corner (which I am considering taking up again)
A kiddie from a band who were supporting us t'other day said to our guitarist, as he set up his shiny Blackstar half stack & dean guitar infront of our blokes battered old Laney combo & tatty squier strat (albeit an early American built one) "you make do with that old amp & copy, do you?" I'll let you guess who had the better sound & didn't spend the entire set fiddlin, a twiddling, squatting down listening & grimacing?!?!? ;-)
I have used the time honoured teenage kiddy method of putting stickers on my gear to make them look real in order to stop me havnig to punch these lack-witted twats in the face. But not always...

On the back of gareth's other topic, it occurred to me that most of us see "never been gigged" in a listing and assume that means it's less likely to be damaged. As a counter argument, i put it to you that most of the damage done to my instruments has been done at home, and my regular giggers tend to live in cases, and thus be in better nick than the ones that litter the floors of my studio and home. The scratches down the back of my SG came from shoving it into a gap behind my acoustic (doh, stap button), most of the dings on my instruments comes from standing up from my chair and knocking them against the table. The bent tuner on my rickenbastard is from whacking the headstock against a shelf in the studio by mistake. The bent pot on my fretless is from it dropping into the table leg as I reached across for a mandolin... I could go on. Conversely I have somewhere, in a case, a telecaster that has been to hundreds of gigs, been played at a lot of them, and looks like it did the day i bought it, because it lives in a case. Discuss....
