1. Oh, and the last 2 or 3 Ozzy Sabbath albums are a bit pony too, there is no sacred lineup, Never Say Die is ****.
2.
Thank god for that ....People used to look at me like i was wearing a dress at metal gigs doing this finger style. *
I have worn a dress at metal gigs as well.
3.
so I started playing with all four fingers staring with my little finger and working to my index in one stroke,
At last! Someone else who does this, thank you thank you thank you, i am not a freak! I always figured I've got 4 fingers, why not use them all and save all that stress.
4. I have a Ritter, it fits in all my crap (leads, spare leads, tuners, emergency toolkits and stuff, oh and i got my coat in it last month as well). Is not too uncomfortable on your back, and seems to be okay. It gets a proper comfort test every other month or so when I gig in that there london, as I go and stay with my friend in Stanmore, and tube it into Camden for the day (around 10:30) spend the day being dragged around the market by the missus with the bass on my back and then head off for soundchecks etc. about 6ish. (would be about a 2 hour round trip to go back and get the bass from my friend's house). It doesn't hurt as much as it should do
5. I had it in an old Ibanez at one point, I wrapped bits of veneer round it until it stuck snugly. Seemed to work alright, probably have recordings of it somwhere..
6.
The Eternal Idol is a personal favourite, the title track in particular is probably the heaviest thing Iommi ever did. There's a deluxe version of it available now which has the Ray Gillen version for the second disc (essentially Tony Martin came in at the last minute and replaced Ray's takes) and Ray had one of the finest voices you'll ever hear.
+1 First Sabbath album i ever got, when I was 13 in 1990, didn't realise there was a "classic" Sabbath era then. Bought vol 4 on vinyl a week later, and never bought a non-ozzy sabbath album again. Still love eternal idol though (even if my old tape of it is very squeaky now, nice excuse to buy the deluxe edition...)
7.
If you have different degrees of hearing loss in each ear, this can be the result. Known as diplacusis, which as said, tends to sort itself after a few seconds. When it doesn't, problems!
Explains everything. Thanks
8.
If you're after jangly, then not all hollow bodies are the same. If anything, it's down to the pickups, so (depending on one means by jangly) I'd be looking at single-coils - any of the Fender varieties or P90's. One possibility - Danelectro reissues. They come in new around £230-250, less s/h depending on age. Hollow body, twang and jangle out the ying-yang but can also snarl like a mother. I love mine.
Just looked on thomann, they are going for about 150 brand new on there at the minute, bit difficult to not buy one myself....
9. chuckle....
10. I likes open G a lot. DGDGBD, it is nice. Also open D DADF#AD (like open E, but less string breaky) Or anything that takes your fancy.
11. Most underrated and utterly brilliant guitar player ever, Olga from the toy dolls.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbVShjnMoBs
12. keeping the drummer on my deaf side. it is nicer that way.
13. 75 is a good price for any Jap stuff. Especially with the hard case, score. It's only got 4 strings, how hard can it be? *dons flame proof suit and runs*
14. If the made in japan is stamped into the neck plate (assuming its a bolt on neck) then it's probably from the matsumoku factory and a very nice bit of kit. They were distributed with a billion different names on them, so brand name is largely not so important with japanese stuff.
15. Can't play sitting down for long periods, without hanging the bass down to my feet on the strap, right shoulder won't take being squeezed up there, i have gibbon arms. Same sitting as standing not good for everyone.
16.
Surprised that the Yamaha DX7 E.Piano only made it to number 35. If you were born in the 80's think yourself lucky you were too young to remember!
I think it was a chronological list, rather than order of importance. (I quite enjoy a DX7 E.Piano myself, though I do jam it through a fuzzface and a phaser... )
17.
Sounds like cramp But interesting question, being self taught, never had any taught input into how best to hold/play bass - you see some players with it up around their neck, some slung low, anyone with thoughts on advised alignment of arms, wrists etc?
Whichever hurts least for you. I find having the bass really low to put the strings at the end of my right arm helps a lot more than having it up high for the left hand. jaunty angle helps with that. Others find the exact opposite, but if my right arm isn't straight, my shoulder give me absolute hell afterwards/during playing.
18.
They were hounds of love though Dave. She was trying to send a message and you missed your chance
Bugger, and i forgot to take my shoes off before I threw them in the lake on my getaway.....
19. I'll never forget Kate Bush's big wide eyes when she last saw me and said.... "I've told you before, get off my lawn, there's a restraining order on you, guards! Release the hounds! That pervert's back again...."
20.
I don't think you can over-emphasise how important vocal monitoring is. Always essential for lead vox obviously, but sometimes it's seen as less important for BVs, so you can end up not hearing what you're doing and just howling into the void. That's my excuse, anyway.
I have got round this problem by being deaf in an interesting way in my right ear. I can always hear my voice inside my head as if I had my finger in my ear like a beardy folky type. Which is nice.
21. I have a Sue Ryder Tele. It will be nice one day (when I'm done tweaking it) but out of the box it was a piece of sh1t. just in case you were tempted. Squiers are good, as are old arias etc.
22. Did I mention how incredibly cheap I am?
23. always wanted one of them old TB or kramer ally necked thingys, bass or guitar, don't mind. Never got one when they were cheap in the 90s though, and now they're all vintage and collectable and expensive
