Just done a gig with my HB as a head on top of my old 2x15s. It sounded bloody brilliant, it is a keeper. However, I did notice the wiggliness of the power socket. I may use gaffa tape on it (BTW, I turned everything off except the bright and boost switches at the front end, had the low and high controls pretty much flat, gain at about 12o'clock and master at about 12 o'clock. Loud as loud needs to be and proper old school P-bass sound coming through, Yay.
Sorry to hijack, but how do you fretless guys monitor your playing in a live situation? Often as not I struggle to hear myself playing fretted bass in the band where intonation isn't an issue (as long as you hit the correct fret )
I have a big amp. Or a decent monitor Or I sound shockingly awful.... If you are struggling to hear yourself then you need to do some eqing, buy a bigger amp or tell the rest of your band to turn the **** down.

Have a very long conversation, work out which member of the band is saying no to the most suggestions, then tell him/her "you pick the ****ing songs then!" finish your drink, chuck the glass at him/her and walk out of the room.
You need to do this........go on all the cool kids are doing it......meet you round the back of the bike sheds for a sneeky go on an upright.....first go is free
Is that a euphemism? I only wanted a go on your bass...

I blame promoters/management. I have recently been turning up to multi-band gigs where I've been told it's an in-house rig, or a share, and at no point has anybody pointed out who's rig it is I am using. So no thank yous, and I am sorry for that, I am nice to rigs though, don't even move the knobs much. Thanks to the guy from Saturday Sun on Tuesday night though, your orange rig was lovely, sound engineer didn't point you out to me though.

You are not helping my GAS gav.....

Hooray! I spent some time on another well known bass forum yesterday, I didn't like it....

I really need to stop looking at this thread, I haven't paid this much attention to the whiny noises in my ears for years...
Oh yes, I could put the OP in touch with a former guitarist of CoF
The one that stands there innocently wearing his earplugs and saying "WHAT DO YOU MEAN TURN DOWN?!?!? THIS IS MY F***ING SOUND, BALLS OUT ROCK AND ROLL MATE" whilst deafening the rest of the band (who all left as I recall, though this was post CoF)

i got used to it, and enjoy using ShergoldSnickers advice and using it as a tuner. I also like the odd days when my ears are in harmony, such as a minor third. (One is tinnitus from very loud music, the other is knackered from a fall off a cliff 15 years ago, different pitches, lovely).
Does anyone agree with my pianist friend who believes that musicians are divided into readers and memorisers, and you're either one or the other, but very rarely both?
I want to disagree and say that I am both (but in reality i get distracted by shiny things and lose my place, i am better off memorising, which is why I can play every bloody song i've ever learned, but have difficulty remembering what day it is.)
Am I the only one who finds it weird that people will pay a premium for worn new basses, but look for genuine old basses in mint condition? There's a phrase involving arses and faces here, isn't there?
it is a bit, but I suspect these are two different sets of people.... I have some very worn old basses, they are nice. I have one shiny newish bass, it is headed the way of the others, by virtue of my sweaty hands.

I liked that a lot more than I expected to. There are spaces in it where some kind of Steve Harris frippery would work (I'm thinking the harmony guitar bit in the middle) but only briefly. On the whole you are right Eddie, it needs simplicity to really drive the whole thing.
Y'know, reading this is like being in a weird parallel universe. Or on a guitard forum. It's really rather refreshing.
Skank (as always) has a marvellous point. Imagine if Cliff Williams had said "No, these songs need many twiddly and exciting fills and poly-rhythmed marvellousness" AC/DC would be a pile of f**k-awful turd and nobody would listen to them. 8th note roots are great, if you play them right you will enjoy it. I'm mostly playing one root note per bar in my current gig, and the trick is to make them sound nice and hold long enough. It is a lot more challenging than the chromatic hemi-semi-quaver madness that I have been known to do at times. (Any twat can play a lot of notes very fast, the trick is to know when to do it). I would be interested to hear the songs Eddie is talking about. I suspect they need restraint.

Or he's been listening to early Led Zep and Rush, where they used to double the lines on Guitar and bass.
Dave should be fairly familiar with this. It's not uncommon to drive through Hatherleigh, where Dave lives, and see someone doing something similar. Although it does usually involving walking a sheep on a lead as well.
Sheepdog innit?

This is all getting a bit "Hutchence"....
Easiest solution? Leave it. It's what it sounds like that counts. You've obviously got too much time on your hands.
You're not wrong there....

Nice idea J, I might put leather corners on it to look like elbow patches. (Actually considering using Vox cloth, and making a gold badge what says Box on it)
-
Fair point, I shall pioneer this dumb idea, using gaffa tape and string.
I once routed network cable from downstairs to upstairs using a roast fork, a knife steel and a corkscrew. Then I fitted the plug using a cigarette lighter and a pair of tweezers. I told this to the man who came to inspect my boiler later that day and he gave me a screwdriver. Which I then used to open a carton of milk.
I doff my hat to you, you sir are a genius

I was thinking that the ugly metal grill on the front of my harley benton promethean clone was ugly. And then i wondered about wrapping it in some attractive cloth so it looks nicer. Then i wondered if that would be easy, or if it would make horrible farty noises. But I am not sure. Would it need to be proper speaker cloth? Would I need to make a wood frame and do it properly? How would I stick it to a bit of metal grill anyway? Would an old pirate flag do the job nicely? Any suggestions gratefully received.
