Interestingly, sticking faithfully to the original has had me accused of not coming back in in the right place by one punter. 2nd verse message in a bottle, Sting does not play on the first line, OK? (and so neither do I, and some people assume I missed a cue... ) I have stopped playing lines exactly as they are on the record, but will learn them properly first, and then deviate as the band requires it. (i.e. when they cock it up and I have to rush in and rescue the whole thing from certain disaster with some chord flurries or excessive rhythm)

Beautiful job, I like that a lot.

2 clone P's, one made up of ebay bits (fretless) and my beloved old Sunn Mustang (heavily tinkered with).

If your frontman is not fronting through the gaps, kick him in the arse. Or get your own mike, and do some jokes at both his and the guitarists expense. (Works for me, has shamed them both into being less crap)

How easily replaceable are you for your band?
Dave Vader replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I assumed I was easy to replace, but having recently told the covers band i'm leaving, I have realised that without me the singer will never find the venue in his van, and will continue to wire up the PA wrong and not be double checked before there is no sound. Also the rest of the band will have to cue themselves in on bits they can't remember without my nods. And they may not know to not turn up most of the drummers mics in the PA, they are just there to make him happy. My replacement is a member here, and I wish him the very best of luck (and a map) -
Most ordinary mortals still use mono for FOH, so any pan pots you may have on the subgroups and direct channels are effectively redundant for the purpose of L/R panning FOH. Reason? If you mix in stereo in anything but an enormous venue most people will hear a less than perfect sound balance because they're nearer one speaker than the other - extreme example: pan the lead guitarist hard left... anybody near the right speaker won't hear him (which some would argue is a good thing, but that's another thread ).
In small venues I use the pan to compensate for the fact that anyone right in front of the guitarists amp will have way more guitar in their ears already, so he is panned over to the other side, so the sound is more even across the venue. Same goes for the bass and keys on the other side.
Off topic I know, but I've often wondered why Genesis seem to be completely off the radar nowadays. They must have been on a par with Yes as perhaps the biggest prog bands, but whilst other prog bands of the time get kudos today Genesis are rarely name checked.
I would blame Phil Collins solo career for that, entirely. Oh, and Invisible Touch, oh and We can't dance or whatever it was called....

Without punk we would not have peter and the test tube babies or the Anti-Nowhere League. That would make me sad.

I have a mandolin and play it a lot, years ago the guitar tab sites had a few mandolin ones on there as well. But haven't looked for a while. (want a 4 string mandobird, might have to buy one now)

Ibanez double neck - if Carlsberg made basses...
Dave Vader replied to Jigster's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
yep, that's what I'd expect a company that make beer would do if they made a bass... -

fretless fretboard: natural finish or epoxy
Dave Vader replied to mentalextra's topic in Repairs and Technical
Ive done the fretless conversion and been playing the neck untreated. Im happy with my work but the guitar has a very metallic bright sound so im going to get rid of the roundwound strings first. I realise the Yamaha naturally has this sort of tone and wondered if I could change pups to get a warmer more rounded tone. Thanks

Its was too good to last . I have noticed some wear from the roundwound strings on parts of the fretboard. I dont want to varnish the fretboard unless I really have to. I dont want to risk losing my sound by changing to flatwounds. What to do? What to do?
Use flats, you said the bass was too metallic and bright and you wanted warmer and rounder. This will do the job. Unless you changed your mind and decided you liked that, in which case ignore me, and rub superglue all over your fingerboard, -
Are they made of cheese!
That would explain it... possibly the cheese i have been playing with them has managed to alter their physical structure on an atomic level, alchemy if you will. Or it could be that i play a lot of gigs, and beat the picks too bloody hard... I prefer the first one though.
I've always enjoyed the process of designing the finish to a song: massive thump to finish, segue (perhaps with nicely orchestrated key change) into next song, play the last bar of this song then straight into the next one, or even a live fade ... it's a subject I'd like to bring up with the party band I'm auditioning for in a few days time. Would it impress them to show I'm thinking about such issues?
No, I once auditioned a drummer who had clearly spent too much time thinking about it, and kept wanting us to try segues before we'd even learned the ****ing songs properly. It was annoying, give them a bit of time first before you start throwing new ideas at them. Then hit them with loads once you're in.

I have been looking at these too, and nobody seems to have tried one yet...

I have a set on my P, I got the 45-105, they are ok. You need the long scale ones, the medium will be a bit too tight. I think i might have been happier with the 40-100s, but I got the heavier ones cos I'm used to fender 100-50s and thought the 40 might be a bit light. (I think I preferred the fenders as well.... )
I use 3mm big stubbies. Brilliant.
I have worn out 3 of them in the last year, and I only use a pick on 3 songs in the set...

SGs / Les Pauls - why two vols AND a pickup selector?
Dave Vader replied to M-Bass-M's topic in Guitars
Another one is to set the neck volume to 'off', bridge to 'full' then get a faux stuttering trem 'cut-off' sound by toggling the switch back and forth. Loads of famous records with that on (brain isn't giving me any names right now tho!).
Stiff Little Fingers, Wasted life. Angus Young does it a lot as well. -
Took me a while to get through all of it (kept getting interrupted by doing work things) but that was hysterical. Hard not to get odd looks from the office for chuckling so hard.

Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 or Saffire PRO 24 DSP
Dave Vader replied to Me And My Bass's topic in Recording
I've just bought a saffire, and am still trying to get it set up. My mate, conversely has recently bought a scarlett, and it worked fine straight away. Thus I shall suggest the one i didn't get. -
'It's not about the money... we don't want your money...' how much is a ticket for a Jessie J gig again?
I chuckled quite a lot watching her sing it on telly last summer, draped in uber-blingy diamondy stuff. For it's not about the ba-bling-ba-bling it is?

Most hateful song on your covers bands set list?
Dave Vader replied to Dave Tipping's topic in General Discussion
Wishing - Flock of Seagulls You have never experienced dullness followed by massive panic when it gets to the changey bit at the end until you have played this mindless droney piece of sh1t song. -
It's not taking the easy way out. As ever, YMMV, but to dismiss it out of hand is stupid. It has advantages and disadvantages like every technique. I think there is a limit to how fast you can go with two fingers. For most people, it's not a problem since they don't need to go that fast. It also makes it easier to play faster for longer, since each finger does less work. I don't know what style or styles of music you play, but for bands I've been in it's important.
Also, as you get older, and your wrists start to hate the cold weather, it is bloody useful for keeping going.
