Depressing things your bandmates say.
Dave Vader replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
We're just playing in the wrong venues for us (after 3 or 4 gigs on the trot where the audience has left) *no you can't play, and your bird can't sing, so I left* -
New knobs (Stop laughing at the back)
Dave Vader replied to Judo Chop's topic in Accessories and Misc
They haven't by any chance got little grub screws on the side to screw them on have they? I once didn't notice them, and felt a bit of a prat when I realised they were there and screwed them into place. If not then Rich is right, bit of card should work. (Roach your knobs) -
Being asked to turn down by management
Dave Vader replied to Dave Vader's topic in General Discussion
He is probably also used to guitar players with huge stacks who will not turn down, and lumps you metal bassists in with them (I have had similar problems while twiddling knobs in pubs) It's nice when the landlord comes and tells the poor guy at the desk to turn it down, for him to actually be able to, rather than do the usual shrug, point at the guitarist with his huge marshall stack, and say "tell him that" -
Its' OK, I'm not really offended by flippancy. I'm hoping Dave Vader's comment was flippant as well
Semi-flippant, and more compatibility than just ability. Ends badly if not. (I was in fact quoting my wife, who insists she only married me for... well you know) -
I like her, not so much my kind of music but I'd prefer to see a million more girls like her make their way in the industry than see one more Lady Gaga. Jessie has a very obvious songwriting talent and a great voice too, so good luck to her.
Since when did Gaga not have a songwriting talent or voice? I don't like her stuff much, but those two facts are fairly undeniable.
I think gaga rocks! Too many x factor wannabes want instant fame for nothing, even if you don't like gaga as a performer you can't knock her for not putting the hours in learning to play, sing and dance often at the same time.
Pete is right, very much so.
I'd rather choose a partner based on personality, than bedroom ability. You can always learn but you can never stop being a bunny boiler!
No, you are wrong. It's more important to be compatible in a bedroomy way than to actually like each other.* *this might be a total lie -
It's not that hard to come by surely?
Disappointing fumbles are easy to come by, but a truly excellent lass that knows exactly what she's doing is a rare beasty and worth hanging on to. -
Oh, if they're dots, use a hole punch to get them out of the veneer, and pile them up high so you can sand them down to fit.
-
I stuck in little bits of veneer with superglue, and cut them down with a stanley blade. Much nicer than my wood fillered neck is.

My wife is an arbiter of taste, if she thinks I'm in a sh*t band then she acts like the old fashioned Ono-Girlfriend, however if she likes them, I can go and play whenever I like. Quite useful, got me out of a real bind earlier in the year. -
did a short tour in cornwall over the summer. Lessons learnt; fish and chips down there are damm tastey. Also, take swimming shorts as you never know when you will need them and when the time comes that you need them and dont have any.. You either need to pay well over the top for some new ones, buy asda ones that look like they were styled for angus young or wear boxers and casual shorts and be uncomfortable for the rest of the day
Was that you leaping off the railings in St Ives back in August (stark bollock naked I might add) you could have done with some shorts, yes....

More new Fender models - The 'Modern Player' Series
Dave Vader replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
I likes the look of that tele, and if they're under £400 I might take a punt on one... (poorly named though, they are clearly not modern...) -
After all, we all thought the Kramers with ally necks sounded horrible in the 80s. And they did.
Mick Karn might disagree... And I quite like Mids, they are useful, plywood for me then.

Being asked to turn down by management
Dave Vader replied to Dave Vader's topic in General Discussion
Your band mates should know better than to play in a town festooned with octogenarians. What do they expect ? And yes you've got a very sulky drummer.
Heh, I think you may have a bit of inside information there Marvin... -
I knew a drummer who had a kit set up for quiet gigs, smallest shells he could get hold of, he put a pillow inside the snare drum, took the bottom skin off the toms, replaced the batter skin with the heaviest oil filled heads he could, and put a single (actually it might have been a double duvet) duvet in the kick drum. Halved the volume of the kit, sure it didnt sound as nice, but it was really quiet, meant he coul dplay with sticks, and in a mix didnt sound too bad at all.... He was a really really busy drummer too.
I know a drummer who has put decent skins on a little babby kids kit, he goes out with a band who use a 3 watt guitar amp, and a genz head into a little 1x8 bass cab. They sound brilliant, but wonderfully quiet. He also looks taller... -
One more thing. I never understand being asked to play until midnight in a venue where they're worried about the neighbours. Why not start earlier and play until 11pm?
Good point, same venue once told us we had to play right up to midnight, after we had started early and cut the break short to try and keep what few punters she had in there for her. One reason among many that we're not going back (can't deal with the sulky drummer, easier just not to go there again). -
So, for the 8000000000th time on friday, the management at the venue we were playing (small pub, neighbours who like to complain a lot) asked us to turn down before we'd even made a sound, and then after the world's quietest soundcheck, asked us if we could still be quieter. Bearing in mind that this is the quietest band I've ever been in (synth-heavy 80s tribute, Duran Duran, Spandau, etc. etc.) I have rarely been left with so much as a ring in my last working ear after one of our sets. Made me chuckle again, as I pressed the DFA button on the desk and said "No worries, love, we'll go down another notch or two". Then, the guitarist and the drummer turned round to us and said "Shall we just ****ing go?" and intimated that they weren't prepared to put up with this crap, and we were too good for this gig anyway and so on and so on. Me and the singer were fairly clear that we were doing the damn gig, and needed the money, and had driven for about 2 hours to get here anyway. Guitar player was so sulky, he turned down for the whole 1st set to a completely inaudible level (despite me and the singer askig him between each song not to be a twat, he finally turned up for the 2nd set, after keyboard player had a word) which p*ssed me off even more. My view has always been that the person who is paying you to play in their venue can pretty much ask you to do anything (within reason) and you should smilingly agree and carry on. I can't be doing with the ego thing. Also I used to run a pub with problem neighbours, and had to try and keep the levels as low as possible, and if you don't remind most bands a good two or three times, they do tend to get louder, she's just doing her job. Anyone have an opposing view? Do you believe that as "the talent" you have a god given right to play as loud as you want wherever you like? Or like me, are you a firm believer in the DFA button and a kind smile and nod?

WD-40, spray it on a cloth, wipe strings off by wrapping it round the whole thing. Job done.
I'd love to look cool with a hat. What hats are cool though? I look like a twat in a baseball cap as my face is quite long. Often have to wear a suit or shirt when gigging so something that would go with that.
Trilby/Fedora or something like that
-
I have both hat and beard, however, I take the hat off to play, as it gets bloody hot in there.
