It is rather colloquial mostly employed by those who live North of the M25, rather than those of us down in the cultured end of the country Oh, hang on, everyone in Devon seems to use it as well....
Sounds enthralling really. Especially from here, 200 miles away. I look forward to the next episode.
+ the 1. I'm enjoying this, it's nice when it happens to someone else.
Perhaps cover bands in 20 years time will be playing Foo Fighters and Muse. That'll be good :-) (not massive fans of either but it's music I know).
They all flipping are down this way now. I long for the days of Nirvana covers....

How long can you store bass strings for?
Dave Vader replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I bought a crateful of Slinkeys back in the early 90s when I was playing a lot, I'm just finishing up the last few sets now and they seem fine even though they were in paper envelopes and not the modern sealed packs. (I think it was 24 boxes each containing 10 sets, cost a fortune to buy but the price per set was less than 50% retail) In theory any string in a sealed plastic packet should last indefinitely, not sure about Rotosounds though.... they seem to go dead very quickly for me.
But surely you haven't used any since the early 90s? -
GK Backline 210 farting speakers quandrum
Dave Vader replied to Quoth'd's topic in Repairs and Technical
Worth remembering that GK stuff works backwards, you turn the master right up and use what would normally be the gain control to set volume levels. The boost control is what gives you the grindy noise. Quirky but true, try that. -
Bought a wizard pickup from Graham a while back, and never got round to leaving feedback, nice prive, quick delivery etc. etc. Would deal with again, without hesitation.
-
Took me a while to get round to it but bought a driver off Oli a week or two ago, good chap, very helpful with working out what I needed, and quick delivery with better packaging than the proper speaker companies I've dealt with. Also sold him a scratchplate ages ago, and can't remember if I left a note saying that that also went well. It did by the way.

Tuning / Detuning - confusing the **** out of me
Dave Vader replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
without the embarrassment of a capo.
Utter tosh, the only guitar players I know who think like this are sh1t guitar players. Most realise that if you have 2 guitars in your band, they're going to need to play different shapes in different places to avoid stepping all over each other. Feel free to piss about trying to play D and G shapes up on the 6th fret all you like, I'm going to stay with the guys who can play and slap on my capo. -
MB1. Looks like a Martin Sims paint job? didn't Paul Weller have a similar sort of pop art thing on his Rickenbacker Guitar?
Yes
Is it this? http://cgi.ebay.com/EARLY-TEISCO-K-2B-JAPA...Item#vi-content
I've got one of them, I wanted the pickups for a scary weird tone from my fretless nightmare bass, it worked (though I may be sending them to Andy at Wizard for a rewind, and general sort out). I am using what's left of it for a baritone, it will be very cool.

Yes. Unless it is a decent bone one, in which case... Maybe.

What do you guys play when sound checking
Dave Vader replied to gt4ever's topic in General Discussion
Anything I can play with one hand, as I need the other one to fiddle with the desk. -
This photo confuses me greatly. Surely conventional wisdom says that the nut should be closer to the bridge to improve intonation? http://www.buzzfeiten.com/howitworks/howitworks.htm
Conventional wisdom says that as soon as you touch a fret anything you have done behind it has bugger all effect on intonation. However, I'm willing to be told otherwise.
If you're struggling for volume with a 450w head, 1x15 and 4x10 then either a)your guitarists are deafening b)You're playing massive pubs/clubs or c) there's something not right with your rig or settings. I use a Ashdown ABM500 and an 8x10 and even in a band with 2 guitarist's both using Marshall heads/cabs volume is never a problem, my amp sometimes is just ticking over. Your rig should be enough to take ceiling's down in most pubs!!
+the 1 My 300w GK Backline with 2 15"s never even gets to half without things falling off walls. Have you tried a wee bit of eqing to get through? Or shooting the guitar players?

This is NOT a "what's the best bass for metal" question!
Dave Vader replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I auditioned for a metal band back in the 80s called "Chariot" who were quite popular at the time. I was playing a white with t/shell scratchplate Fender 62 re-issue at the time. Didn't get the job, but I've since found out it wasn't because I was playing a white bass - it was because I was f***ing pony at playing. And the moral of the story is boys and girls - if you're good, you'll get the job whether you're playing a 5-string Traben or a branch off a tree with 4 or 5 elastic bands.
I dep for a band with Scott Biaggi of Chariot in down here in Devon, he is a decent guitar player, and a sound bloke on the right day. Apparently he wasn't asked back for the reunion a couple of years ago, I didn't ask why, the website says they couldn't find him. That is apparently a lie. -
lol! my tuner one is a lot simpler than that, literally about 6 components which i just tweaked a bit to work better for bass. the only issue with the Ruby is that in it's current state it's not going to let through a lot of bass -- in fact the roll off starts around 400 Hz into a 4 ohm load. so, I've tweaked it a bit, as I really like this idea and think it is something I'll use. i've designed a distortion pedal around a 386 before, might as well properly do an amp too. I would use the attached version over the Ruby, but the choice is up to you. if you really want to strip it down, you can do away with R6, R7, C2 and C4. Q1 can be literally any n-channel FET you can find, the only difference will be to the overall gain levels and the difference won't be massive. one final note, the schematic software I use writes anything over 1000 uF as a millifarad (mF) -- thus the output cap is 2200uF (or 2.2mF), and not 2.2uF.
Nice one, thanks, I haven't done a lot of circuits since I left school 20 years ago, so this could be fun. Done a great deal of guitar insides, but laid off the fiddly bits. Will let you know how I get on, like the stripping down idea, and your tweaking should help. Might end up slotting the whole thing into the old horn slot of my 1x10, thus making a battery combo of sorts.
Another +1. I think the maple with black blocks looks a little cheap.
Like real 70s fenders were.... in the 90s, and for good reason...

http://runoffgroove.com/ruby.html I found this that I might put together later on if the idea works out. Would like to see your tuner amp spec as well escholl, more ideas hanging about to steal from the better.
I once built a 2watt battery amp and ran it into the speaker on my practice amp. Yes, it did work, but wasn't loud enough for what i wanted, however, it would have been loud enough to keep up with an acoustic guitar.
Excellent, I have the smokie in my possession now, and will be testing tonight. I fully expect a totally abysmal blur of mud and fuzz. Then a rethink...
Ooh are you going for cream pups too.
Yep, got some cream covers from Bass Doc, and a set of Wizard trads from samuel, nearly have everything in place and ready, just have to get this bridge off, file out the neck pocket to fit my maple fretless neck (off the bass in my avatar, which has been selflessly testing it for the last month) and dig out some old cream strat knobs to go on the pots. And hoping you're right with the WD soak MM.

That is very much a Kay, I fixed one up for a friend of mine last year. Surprisingly fun to play, and didn't sound all bad after a LOT of work.
