I'm looking to sell my Epiphone EB3 Bass as im looking to get some money together for a new amp head Truth is i've never played it much. Looking for a fair price, £115 and it's yours. Would prefer collection from Teesside, but can arrange delievery at buyers expense. Would also consider a trade for a squier VM Jazz, in natural finish, maple neck with block inlays. This would involve money your way also. PICS BELOW, SWEET. There is a slight ding in the top of the 8th fret, it's absolutely tiny, doesnt affect anything at all.
The Sound City will sort you, if you get an appropriate cab. When people say 'distortion', they don't mean pedal type distortion, compression is probably a better word. Valve amp power compression/distortion sounds good, not in a good distortion pedal kind f way, but in a big fat awesome valve amp tone kind of way that is pretty much not comparable in any way to pedals labeled 'distortion'.
What kind of cab would i need then? I think mine has a sensitivity of 98db. After reading that article someone linked, according to that 200 watts should sort me out. Which is why i guess, you're recommending i get another cabinet!
In amongst all these posts you have most of the facts. A watt is a watt but valve amps behave differently when they are overloaded and so you can push the average levels closer to the maximum output. Watts don't measure loudness which is about sound pressure levels and the different perception of different frequencies. Sound pressure depends as much on the speakers as the amp. Doubling the amp power only gives a 3dB increase in power. If you want a summary of how this all works red this http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/columns/gea...ng_it_loud.html I don't know which Sound City you are looking at but the ones I used to use had 6x EL34 output valves and I measured the output at 300W RMS over a 30sec test period (I kept blowing speakers) so the short term output might be better than the continuous rating. If your amp isn't loud enough for the audience then go through the PA. If a 120W valve amp isn't loud enough for you to hear then stand nearer your speakers and away from the guitarists/drummer. You are already causing permanent damage to your hearing by the way.
Thanks for that link, i'll give it a read! and yeah i generally do go through the PA when we play larger venues, i have a sansamp for that! Yeah i think that sound city does have the 6 el34's but it's only supposed to have an RMS of 120 watts, i dont know what step to take next really. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?act=attach...st&id=49426 I really REALLY want a valve head, but dont wanna break the bank! HELP!
i had one of those. I found it wasn't loud enough, i never had enough headroom! My sound compressed evertime i turned my distortion and it would squeal like a motherflip everytime i stopped playing.
damn! one to avoid then eh? Might have to try get myself endorsed by Orange like you then would love a ad200 me but cant justify spending that much coin yet!

Hello! I play in a vey loud band, two guitarists who love to turn up and a drummer who hits harder than David Haye. I'm looking at getting an all valve head, the Sound City b120 in the FS has interested me. However, i'm worried that the 120 all valve watts wont be loud enough! I'm currently playing through a Trace AH300SMX which to be honest never goes up more than half way! Is there anyone that can help me in my little predicament who may have been in the same situation before? is 120 all valve watts gonna be enough for my needs? will be played through an ampeg svt410hlf
Got pics of everything but the speakers as they're at the drummers house and he's on holiday until later this weekend. Speakers are 350w each, amp, I think is 400w a side and the desk is an older classic, and I think built here in Scotland. Everything works well and is, as I said before, and excellent vocal pa. Add a powered sub and you can start sticking kick drum and bass through it no problem. It did us proud when we used it... I'll get pics to you as soon as I can. Cheers D.
Excellent, thanks very much Hoe many channels are on the mixer?
I have a pair of Peavey Hisys 1's (12" Black widow speakers plus horn), an Alto Mac 3.2 poweramp and a Sountracs Topaz 14:4:2 desk. Could probably throw in a Korg reverb unit and a rack case to hold it in as well. Excellent vocal PA. Looking for £350 for everything. Worth a wee drive north.... cheers D.
Got any pics/specs mate? Thanks
The Wharfedales are fantastic value, not their best but at that price they will get you through. If I could get to W.Yorks they would be sold. The peavey's are OK too. they don't give the best vocal sound with their cheap horns but you'll need to spend more on something like the Mackies or Yamaha's etc to get better. Impedance works the same way for PA as it does for any other speakers and amps. It is fairly normal to use a slightly overpowered amp however as you never should run a PA amp into distortion, so a 500W/channel amp into 350W speakers wouldn't be considered unreasonable as long as you don't crank everything up to flat out.
But theres four speakers right? Two satellite and two bins, how does the impedance work out for the whole system? Sorry i'm just new at this :0)

also, is this good value? http://www.whybuynew.co.uk/Brand-New-Peave...K2-Package.html if i had to buy new?
Hmmm...looking at it the Yorkville's got two separate power amps, I would imagine one for the front-of-house sound and one for the monitors/sub (possibly switchable); running the two Wharfedale 'tops' (the SVP15s) from the front-of house amp would give you a four ohm load, hence each speaker getting 200W, which would be okay. However, putting only 200W from the secondary amp into the two subwoofers is hardly worth it, especially not if you're only putting vocals through the system (which is about all you'd want to with 400W); I'd say use the second amp for a vocal monitor and keep the subs back until you have a setup that'll require them.
Cheers for the info man, turns out the yorkville head has sold anyway. Would it be possible to buy a mixer and a power amp seperately and hook them up together? Also, can you explain how impedance works with PA speakers, i know my stuff when it comes to bass cabs and the like, but when running two tops and two bass bins im not sure how to work it all out! What's going to be the most cost effective way of getting a simple PA system that will be suitable for pub gigs that, if needs be, can handle drums and bass also? Or would it be worthwhile just leaving the PA solely for vocals at this point? any bargains to be had in the FS section? Thanks.

Hey! I'm just starting up with another pub band and we are in need of a PA/FOH system. I've been looking on here at some of the second hand stuff but aint really got a clue when it comes to stuff like this. I've found a powered mixer in the "FS:Other Musically Related Stuff" forum called a Yorkville MP8DX for sale for just £100 which is said to be 400watts at 4 ohms. I found this in this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;hl=YORKVILLE I have also been looking for tops and bass bins and came accross this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...p;hl=wharfedale I guess my question is really would these pair up well together? i think the system impedance for the Wharfdale tops and bins may be 8ohms meaning that the output from the mixer may be considerably reduced however, im not sure, hence why i'm asking! Any help or advice would be appreciated, if there are any other bargains to be had on here that may better suit my needs, dont hesitate to recommend them to me, i think i'm lookng at trying to keep the cost below £500 also, which is why i came looking for second hand stuff. We will mainly be playing pubs, doing covers of thin lizzy, zeppelin and other classic rock tunes, so you get the idea about the type of system we're probably going to need.
Hi, I need to create some room so need to move on the spare pa speakers I have They are Wharfedale SVP 15" tops and the matching 15" bass bins They are a bit scuffed etc ( I bought them from a DJ about 15 months ago ) and we used them in the band for a few gigs until we got use of the next models up ( EVP ) and they are now set up in my spare room for weekly rehearsal Looking for £180 for the four speakers but happy to offer a basschat discount rather than subject them to ebay Anyone interested and I can take pics etc Tony
PM'D Wouldn't mind seeing some pics mate.
done and done. Cheers
I know when i got another pickguard for my precision i had trouble finding one, as mine only has ten holes in (50's Vintage remake thing) compared to the 13 I think are on precisions now? I ended up just making a stencil on a piece of newspaper and sending that to some custom company, think it only cost me 20-30 quid!! cant remember where i got it from for the life of me though
That price sounds OK to me, very reasonable in fact. If you've never done this kind of work before you risk making a hash of it and taking it to a tech anyway, so good decision there. It would probably be worth your while getting some sort cheap electronics project from Maplins or the like so you can practice soldering, it's a good skill to have. My one soldering tip (no pun intended) is use a separate flux even though the solder will have flux in it already, it just makes the job easier. A "third hand" tool is also useful.
Yeah you're right about the tech thing, i got as far as heating the soldering iron up before i bottled it like :0) What do you mean by a seperate flux? I have a gig on Sunday so if i'd have messed it up i'd have been lumped with one of my other basses, which i dont get along with
