The hidden cost of owning that bass - having to MOT it every year!
-
Ok, so . . . It doesn't squish 'quite' to the levels I was after (to be fair, excessive!) and is very transparent sounding. However, it is very refined and musical for a compressor, with an impressively low noise level. It does punch probably better than any compressor I've used, too. I preferred it to the Wampler Ego I had beforehand, so it's staying!

I will go with all previous points. Very much sounds Ike your overloading the input. Better designed amps will had a pad for basses with hot outputs, usually designated 'passive' and 'active'. Although ironically, as has been stated, my P-Bass is probably the hottest bass I have for output. Turn your gain down!

Bit late to the party here, but when I had a LM2 (which I absolutely loved), I wouldn't go anywhere near those filters. VLE just took all the treble and hi-mid off your sound and the VPF, to me, was just an old fashioned 'scoop' switch. I, personally, found neither of them remotely useful. Having played the Marcus Miller 800w model at a rehearsal room, I found the eq points, much improved. They make much more sense and made the already great MB sound, even better.

Had this for a while actually, but forgot to NBD it! My poor SUB, always being the base for my graphite related tinkering, after having previously had a fretted Status neck and then being returned to its OG neck for a while, I thought it would be time to experiment once more. After wanting to buy a fretless and absolutely loving the tone a fretless ray gets, I'll be ashamed to admit it took me a while to realise that I didn't have to go and buy a whole new Musicman and could just change the neck on my SUB! A fair amount of money later, this was the end result. Now, It might just be the most resonant instrument I've ever had. The whole body and neck vibrate to an incredible level (even the tech who did the work commented, stating it was probably the most resonant instrument he had worked on) and although this might not be everybody's bag, the amount of mwah out of the graphite neck is off the scale - It absolutely *sings* Tonally, with 40-95 Flatwounds, the graphite just adds to that Musicman growl. It's an incredibly pokey instrument with the tone wide open, but roll it back, and there is a lovely, soft, warmth to be had, with total articulation. I'd describe it as a live 'studio' tone. The neck profile is the typical Status (what I'd term) flat 'D'. Narrower front to back than the stock Musicman profile, with stronger 'shoulders' but the same width. I'm not going to say it's better or worse as that sort of thing is totally down to preference. I went for lightweight, black Musicman tuners to set off the whole 'dark' vibe, which had the added result of making the bass a little lighter. Thanks for listening to my mini ramble/review, I'm off to go get my Pino on! *Stomps on OC-5*

Luckily, having a Modulus, I never have to bother adjusting anything

That was the RH series. Not the BH. 800w on the BH series really is 800w. To the OP, I can't even imagine how loud you must be to be maxing out a BH800. The only time I've ever pushed my BH550 to max levels was a huge outdoor gig! And that was ear splitting! I'd also add, I haven't experienced this compression at volume. The thing that impresses me most about my BH550 is the fact it stays composed, neutral and clean all the way up, volume wise.

I learned to do all of mine out of necessity, not having a pot to p*ss in as a teenager. it was really good fun learning what to do (and not!). The thing that strikes me, aside from fretwork and electronics, is just how easy it is, really. Get a good tuner to intonate and you're golden!

That Blueburst J is just asking to be bought. Roasted Maple neck as well!

This has been my favourite thread in quite some time!

I have these in my Epifani UL210. Apparently these are the ones to have. I had no idea why they are held in such high regard!

This is incredible. You win.

Thanks for the suggestions, surprising how little videos there are out there that demonstrate Compressors at full pelt. I kinda get most people want them to be transparent/subtle, but it makes it hard to figure out what ones would suit my needs! Seymour Duncan should arrive tomorrow. I'll update once I've had a mess around with it!

Are Gear4Music taking Eden forward as a brand or simply selling off old stock? The WTX264 I had, had the nicest tone of any bass amp I've ever used (bar my Mesa M-Pulse). Would be a shame to lose another great name.
-
Lovely stuff. I can hear exactly what that sounds like just by looking at it!
-
That pickup looks to be in the same position? And tonally, that video is exactly what my Basic sounded like. I do like it though! It is definitely nicer looking.
-
Not myself, but one night in Oxford, we played with a band who's 'Bass Player' had forgotten his Bass. He asked to use my Flea. I laughed.
-
Isn't this just a slight remodel of the Basic? I had one and LOVED it!
-
Thanks for the input, chaps. I went ahead and bought it on the strength the aforementioned video (excellent and how they should be done). I suppose if doesn't do it for me in the real world, I can send it back, or switch on my M-Pulse compressor at the same time and crush the signal into oblivion 🤔😂

My gear is not overly important, it just needs to be able to punch through and have a very forward, aggressive voicing. Playing in a 3-piece. I play more hyperactive lead type bass lines than I do a supporting role, and having a distinctive tone really helps with that. My Modulus Flea is absolutely perfect for the role I take. I bought an M-Pulse 600 to go specifically with the Flea, not only as it's my favourite all time bass head, but it gives a really big, warm, fat and controlled tone. They are like Ying and Yang!

This has to be, hands down, the biggest rip off I think I've ever seen. It's beyond chancing, beyond cluelessness, beyond performance art. Absolute chancing gits! Do they not think somebody looking for a Wal and having that sort of money to spend isn't going to know, within 10,000 paces, this is as much a Wal as I am a Peruvian Parrot named Pavel. Lawd above!!!

Hello! Just wondering if anyone had this pedal and can confirm whether it can get squishy to the point of being an effect. I'm not a fan of transparent compressors and prefer to use them almost as FX - a la Stuart Zender. Will this pedal get me in the ball park? Consensus online seems to say both yes and no!

I have an OC-5. I only use it in the vintage setting for the OC-2 sound. In that respect, it absolutely NAILS it (with better tracking). Not really into any of the other sounds you can get out of it, but there are lots of options open and it's very flexible if that's your bag.

I recently had my USA SUB fitted with a Status lined fretless neck. I absolutely love the fretless sound, it's so unique and allows a lot more expression. I'd echo a lot of the comments - it really improves your ear as you have to be ON IT with intonation (and especially so with a Status), there is no hiding. It's a superb training tool and as you grow with it, you start to unlock it even more! As an aside, apart from Basschat types, I've never ever seen anyone in 18 years of gigging, play one, other than myself. It's a really good way to stand out!

With Ashdown, even if something does happen, you can be sure to benefit from the best Customer Service in the business. I had an Electric Blue and Mag series back in the day. Use an RM from time to time at a rehearsal room and have recorded an album on an early ABM series. All fine except the Electric Blue, which had a common issue with a failed transformer, which was dealt with in an exemplary, swift manner, that other bass companies would do well to pay attention to.
