How much of the Ampeg sound is the amp and how much the cab?
40hz replied to la bam's topic in Amps and Cabs
FWIW, I played an Ashdown ABM through an Ampeg SVT 4x10 during a recording session some years ago. The tone was pure Ampeg. I'd be inclined to say the cabinets are the source of the 'sound' on this basis. -

Having started out on a 1985 E-Series Squier P-Bass back in 2003 I thought it was about time to play a P-Bass again after a near 20 year hiatus from owning one. Prompted by my starting up of a Motown band, I put a wanted ad out on these hallowed pages which turned up this beauty, a 2017 Mexican 50's Classic Series in Fiesta Red. Not much that can be said that hasn't already about P-Basses but some interesting observations considering I've very much been a 'modern' bass type player all these years, purposefully shunning P's just because they are so ubiquitous. The sheer authority and presence of the tone just doesn't fail to bring a smile to my face, it's the first time I've grinned from ear to ear playing a bass in quite some time. In comparison to every other bass I've owned, it's so much more 'there' all the way up the neck and on each string. The strength and clarity of the midrange just makes it absolutely sing. The tone control also has the widest range of usable differences I think I've ever used on a bass. The neck, allegedly has a reputation as a baseball bat but I find it supremely comfortable to play and have no issues with getting around it quickly Fit and finish are superb. I know Mexico have been on the up for many years,, but this is great even by the improved standards. The body is super resonant and you can feel it purring away while you play! Colour me very, very impressed.

Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai. Still the benchmark. https://youtu.be/4JkIs37a2JE

Couldn't agree more. The obvious example of this is the yearly cycle of mobile phone releases that millions sign up to. Never mind the fact there hasn't been any meaningful advance in what a phone can actually do in about 5-10 years. It's just a slightly better camera and more useless gimmicks. This extends to so many differing products in our daily lives.

Just bought a Classic 50s P-Bass from Chris. In super condition, a good price and very well packaged with very quick delivery. Deal with confidence. Many thanks again Chris!

I explicitly stated no offers. So naturally it was full of the very original and hilarious "I'll give you £1" type comments. Another individual told me, quite laughably, that my Flea Bass was worth under £1000. Another individual was questioning why I was asking so much for the bass as it's "not that special". Never mind it's about bang on for market value at this point in time and quite a rare bird in the scheme of things. Some other comments getting quite personal. Whatever happened to just moving on if you aren't interested for whatever reason? I couldn't be bothered with it all.

I second this. The USA SUB is unrivalled for quality and value for money. I love mine to bits!

Hi all, Tonight I thought I would try and list my Modulus Flea bass on a few Facebook Bass sale related groups. I wish I hadn't. A diabolical experience, full of snide, idiotic (and clueless) people with no respect. So I pulled the ad. Made me long for the warm hug of Basschat and it's superb community, spirit and conduct. Selling (and buying, oh so much buying!) here has always been a great experience. Thanks to all that run Basschat and moderate it!

Here we have my 2004 Modulus Flea in Blue Flake. Seymour Duncan Pickup and Bartolini NTBT 2-band preamp. New car is prompting sale. (Bang goes my Wal deposit!) Condition I'd rate as 8/10. A few barely noticeable dings in the finish, worse of which is a (filled in) chip near the jack socket. There is the usual lacquer crack at corner of the neck pocket, but is just in the finish and is not structural. (All 3 of my Fleas have had this). Neck is straight and unmarked, strings are fairly new. Frets are superb. Can be seen and heard in action on my YouTube channel here ; https://www.youtube.com/user/littleblackcloud86 Comes with branded Modulus hardcase. No offers. Would consider trade for Warwick Streamer Stage 2 (unmodified and in good condition) and cash my way. Collection preferred or will travel a large radius to myself here near Stratford-Upon-Avon to facilitate delivery or pickup Will not ship as I would want any prospective buyer to view a bass of this value first to ensure they are happy and to avoid any courier mishaps. Thanks for looking

Gloss black Wal Pro for sale at Bass Gallery - in case anyone is chasing one

Do all class D heads really lose their thud at volume?
40hz replied to alexa3020's topic in Amps and Cabs
Just as a retort to the TC bashing regarding power output, the BQ and BH series heads do not suffer with the goosed power ratings, they give out exactly what they say on the tin. This problem affected the RH series heads only. My BH550 made mincemeat of my LM2 and GK MB500. -
I just opened up the control plate of my Flea and my jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw it has the Bartolini NTBT pre-amp!!. It was sold as Aguilar by the shop! Goes to show though what a massive difference pickups can make, as it sounds so very different to my old Lane Poor/NTBT Flea.

I always found Gumtree to be the absolute pits when it comes to selling bass gear. Absolutely full of chancers and scammers. Would not recommend remotely.

Thanks for looking into it. That's surprised me!

I totally get it with cabs, older ones are huge, cumbersome and very heavy, so I don't feel there's enough of a positive trade off for that, especially since most modern cabs just flat out sound better and can go louder and lower. When it comes to amp heads though, age/weight don't bother me. It's all about the tone. Aside from some valve amps, even a lot of older 'lead sled' type amps aren't that heavy or awkward in the general scheme of things. The price of some of these are a total bargain, especially considering most of the time, they flat out just sound better ( IMO, IME etc).

There is 'this' much time left before Paul buggers off and forms The Style Council.

Basses described as 'upgraded'. With that being an incredibly subjective thing, I always give plus points to people who correctly describe them as 'modified' instead.

Early era Warwick basses have the thinnest necks I've ever played. My old 91' Stage One had a pencil thin neck - was awesome.

FLEA & CHAD SMITH - Fast Funk Jam [1993]
40hz replied to Bart Funk Bass's topic in General Discussion
He used Mesa Diesel cabs on the Californication tour, it was the By The Way tour that saw him switch to GK RBH cabs. -
I don't usually go for nickels as they die very, very quickly in my hands, but had heard they are supposed to have a warmer, more mid orientated tone (as a gross generalisation). It's been a long time since I bought them so my memory fails me. Anyone have any experience of steels that really struck you with a strong mid-range output? As a reference, I tend to use D'addario Pro Steels, Dunlop Super Brights (bit too much on the Flea, though) and Elixir steels when my wallet will stretch to them.
