Seems the top manufacturers may be wrong. They insist on using what they suppose is quality wood for their guitars. Maybe it's a marketing thing?
This will go round and round. And yes to a degree I think it is.

Trouble loading Basschat today - is it just me?

PSN down as well, boring night for me xD -
I'm definitely of the opinion that the wood has little to do with it really. My old Modulus Flea sounded crap acoustically but plug that sucker in and it was absolutely stunning. Granted that's a carbon fibre neck but the fact remains it wasn't a particulary resonant body or neck. Imo it's all in the electrics. I'd be looking at the electric components of this bass or at least what you are expecting tone wise to be happening.

Why would someone think this is a good idea? A lot of time and money ruining an already lovely bass. Just buy a friggin 5er!
-
The G string alignment over the polepiece on a Stingray. 99% of the many I've seen (and owned) have all had this quirk. Not that I'm suggesting it affects the sound in any way (another can of worms). Neither that it's the only mass production bass with this problem, Jazz basses are known to suffer (Indeed mine does) but for some reason its more noticeable on Rays and I can never stop looking at it when I see one!

The Behringer BOD is more like a distortion pedal than an overdrive. Its not very subtle at all and only seems to do balls out terror
Or just buy a Cruztools truss rod driver, and you won't ever have to take the neck off again (unless you need photos of the stamps, etc)! Don't get the jazz neck - dive problem...I've had six so far, and never experienced this. Most have been too body - heavy if anything! My personal bugbear is Spector bridges - no screws to adjust, wobbling around on two legs...Really difficult to set up. I've had two (euro and Kramer-era US) and loved the sound, but this was a major contributer to me selling them!
+1 . I've never experienced even a slight hint of neck dive on the 4 Jazz basses I've owned? All the weights in the body, especially the Geddy Lee I had, which was over 11lbs! I'm definitely also finding the Spector bridge a PITA. Not a great design.

I have a 4ohm Markbass NY122. It is literally is all the cab I'll ever need. Clear and punchy with plenty of bottom end, for £520 it's unbeatable. Not in Berg territory but was the best of the mid priced ones I tried ( 2x12's).
Definitely this. I've always found the sound with the tone rolled off on any passive bass to be more muffled and indistinct with less punch rather than fatter or deeper.
I'd agree with this Painy, definitely my experience also. Run all controls flat out on my Jazz.

In the 4 years I've had my Jazz from new, I've never suffered from a dead spot, but like you now, I use 40-95's and below in gauge. Maybe onto something here.

Stuart Zender's bass breakdown in the song ' Travelling Without Moving'. I wanted to make that sound.

I have lot of time for Mark King, he comes across as a very down to earth and intelligent bloke. He's only one of 3-4 bass players who I can tolerate/enjoy slapping. It takes some unbelievable talent to slap as he does and sing. That said, IMO of course, Level 42 are what I'd call a 'bass players' band. Irrelevant to most others. He does inspire legions of wannabe's with their statii/jaydee/alembic strapped up under the chin and taped thumbs but then again what other famous bass player doesn't inspire people? The guys a British bass playing institution.

Mark King or Flea? And what sub-genre of metal is 'Level 42'
Just for the record I love Warwicks... I just don't understand how they can justify the price of an instrument like this almost doubling in 6-7 years. I bought a standard Corvette back in 2004 which cost me about £800. They're over 2k now!! I genuinely believe Warwick just don't want to repair this so therefore have high-priced me out of a repair. The good news is Martin is going full steam ahead so should have an update end of the week.
In 2004 the Corvette Standard was £550 on most retailers websites!! I remember it vividly, lusting after one on my study breaks!
This could be an option if all else fails. Has anyone ever turned their through-neck into a bolt-on on here in such a way?
It's my understanding that sorting out a truss on a neck through bass isn't impossible, it can just be a lot of work. I'm sure I've seen a video of Stuart Spector talking about this very thing on my youtube travels. At either rate, Martin Simms has a great reputation so fingers crossed it'll be ok!

What I want to know, is who's buying the German Warwicks at these prices? There must be some people out there paying 4k for a SS2 new?! Infinities are 3.5k! Utter madness. (I Love Warwicks for the record)

Jimmy Blanton ... was he really all that?

Bakithi Kumalo anyone?

I cannot believe he spent £2500 on it. I think he's very clearly having a bubble

Love the groove on b-movie.
And another insinuation that if you aren't a fan or don't appreciate Jacos contribution then you can't even be a half decent player. The comments of others, in and out of the music business, would suggest I'm at least a half decent player yet Jaco has never registered on my radar. I have, since this thread, listened to him but along with Stanley Clarke his music makes me whince. Whether he's 'all that' or not I don't care, but you don't have to to be a 'half decent player'. Most of the players held up as 'bass gods' on heres music ranges from being strongly disliked by me to making me recoil when I hear it, bar a couple, but that's not a problem as there's masses of other music for me to enjoy.
Pretty much my thoughts too Maude.

Who do you prefer vocally - The Who or The Beatles?
nice one! is that the one down the road from Tara house?
It's the Crown and Cushion hotel in Chipping Norton, few pics on the walls of him (and Daltrey) living it large in the bar. Awesome.
