1.
Or just buy a Cruztools truss rod driver, and you won't ever have to take the neck off again (unless you need photos of the stamps, etc)! Don't get the jazz neck - dive problem...I've had six so far, and never experienced this. Most have been too body - heavy if anything! My personal bugbear is Spector bridges - no screws to adjust, wobbling around on two legs...Really difficult to set up. I've had two (euro and Kramer-era US) and loved the sound, but this was a major contributer to me selling them!
+1 . I've never experienced even a slight hint of neck dive on the 4 Jazz basses I've owned? All the weights in the body, especially the Geddy Lee I had, which was over 11lbs! I'm definitely also finding the Spector bridge a PITA. Not a great design.
2. I have a 4ohm Markbass NY122. It is literally is all the cab I'll ever need. Clear and punchy with plenty of bottom end, for £520 it's unbeatable. Not in Berg territory but was the best of the mid priced ones I tried ( 2x12's).
3.
Definitely this. I've always found the sound with the tone rolled off on any passive bass to be more muffled and indistinct with less punch rather than fatter or deeper.
I'd agree with this Painy, definitely my experience also. Run all controls flat out on my Jazz.
4. In the 4 years I've had my Jazz from new, I've never suffered from a dead spot, but like you now, I use 40-95's and below in gauge. Maybe onto something here.
5. Stuart Zender's bass breakdown in the song ' Travelling Without Moving'. I wanted to make that sound.

7. Ridiculous bargain. If I can shift my Spector, I'm gonna have this rungles.
8. I have lot of time for Mark King, he comes across as a very down to earth and intelligent bloke. He's only one of 3-4 bass players who I can tolerate/enjoy slapping. It takes some unbelievable talent to slap as he does and sing. That said, IMO of course, Level 42 are what I'd call a 'bass players' band. Irrelevant to most others. He does inspire legions of wannabe's with their statii/jaydee/alembic strapped up under the chin and taped thumbs but then again what other famous bass player doesn't inspire people? The guys a British bass playing institution.
9. Mark King or Flea? And what sub-genre of metal is 'Level 42'
10. This is an unbelievable price. If I had the readies I'd bite your hand + arm (possibly shoulder) off. Chris has got my old Flea now and I miss it terribly!
11.
Just for the record I love Warwicks... I just don't understand how they can justify the price of an instrument like this almost doubling in 6-7 years. I bought a standard Corvette back in 2004 which cost me about £800. They're over 2k now!! I genuinely believe Warwick just don't want to repair this so therefore have high-priced me out of a repair. The good news is Martin is going full steam ahead so should have an update end of the week.
In 2004 the Corvette Standard was £550 on most retailers websites!! I remember it vividly, lusting after one on my study breaks!
12.
This could be an option if all else fails. Has anyone ever turned their through-neck into a bolt-on on here in such a way?
It's my understanding that sorting out a truss on a neck through bass isn't impossible, it can just be a lot of work. I'm sure I've seen a video of Stuart Spector talking about this very thing on my youtube travels. At either rate, Martin Simms has a great reputation so fingers crossed it'll be ok!
13. What I want to know, is who's buying the German Warwicks at these prices? There must be some people out there paying 4k for a SS2 new?! Infinities are 3.5k! Utter madness. (I Love Warwicks for the record)
14.
Play all videos at once and it sounds like jazz
I laughed hard at that!
15. I cannot believe he spent £2500 on it. I think he's very clearly having a bubble
16. Love the groove on b-movie.
17.
And another insinuation that if you aren't a fan or don't appreciate Jacos contribution then you can't even be a half decent player. The comments of others, in and out of the music business, would suggest I'm at least a half decent player yet Jaco has never registered on my radar. I have, since this thread, listened to him but along with Stanley Clarke his music makes me whince. Whether he's 'all that' or not I don't care, but you don't have to to be a 'half decent player'. Most of the players held up as 'bass gods' on heres music ranges from being strongly disliked by me to making me recoil when I hear it, bar a couple, but that's not a problem as there's masses of other music for me to enjoy.
Pretty much my thoughts too Maude.
18.
nice one! is that the one down the road from Tara house?
It's the Crown and Cushion hotel in Chipping Norton, few pics on the walls of him (and Daltrey) living it large in the bar. Awesome.
19. The Beatles! Paul's voice is just so much YES! 'Oh Darling' springs to mind. The dynamics in that song are fabulous. For the record I also absolutely love The Who. Moony used to own the pub I drink in back in the 60's!
20. 2013 Spector Euro 4 SE5 bought from Bass Direct 5 months ago in absolutely mint unmarked condition. All maple body and thru-neck with rosewood board. Chrome hardware. 2 band Tonepump circuit with adjustable trimpot EMG P/J pickups. Brass nut. Straplocks and Gator ProGo case. Bass weight is a comfy 8lbs 12oz. This Euro SE5 is different to the standards in that it has an all maple construction, so is a lot more faithful to the original NS2. Punchy, hi-fi, piano-like tone that really pokes out in the mix and is capable of quite unbelievable growl, as all good Spectors are. Extremely versatile tone capability from the P/J EMG'S. Stunning with a pick and a quite monstrous slap tone, there's literally nothing these basses don't excel at. Open to trades but need to free up some cash so looking for one of the following plus ££ my way. Musicman Stingray/USA SUB/Ray34ca Warwick Thumb Warwick Streamer LX Fender Marcus Miller (under 9.25lbs, my previous exp of the Japanese ones are that they can be HEAVY!) Collection preferred due to value and would want any prospective buyer to actually play over the bass before parting with cash. I am based in Chipping Norton. However, I am happy to meet or deliver within a large radius for small petrol costs. Cheers! Pics http://s1194.photobu...s?sort=3&page=1 Due to the bass serial number not being numbered 1-30 (as it is supposed to be being a limited edition SE5) I emailed PJ at Spector and recieved this response. "hello, thank you for the email. I am glad that you are enjoying your Spector bass! qty 30 of those Euro4LX LE basses were made for the USA distributor, these were numbered 1 of 30, 2 of 30, etc. two additional basses were made at that time for outside the USA and these did not have the special numbering. you have one of these basses. I hope this info helps. have a great weekend! PJ"
21. A Musicman Sterling in blue with a maple neck and under 8lbs, cheers Santa!
22.
I admire his playing and talent, but liove.......no.
I was poking fun at another thread ambient
23. You must all love Jamerson as I do! And if you don't! You aren't a bass player!
24.
They all sound the same. Vintage Fenders are no better than modern Fenders. It's a myth and, in fact, according to Basschats very own tests, the Mark Hoppus J/P Signature is the best Precision around. Invest the money on a good rig. That'll get you on your way to the sound in your head more than a vintage instrument ever will. Play a £2k instrument through a £50 amp and it'll sound just as rubbish as an EBay beginner bass does. Best of luck!
I agree, a P pretty much sounds like a P. The differences I've heard between vintage and non vintage are negligible. Although the late 70's ones seem to sound a bit more ballsy, it's as basic a design as it gets really. Go down the amp route to get that vintagey sound.
